That was a hard slog, driving thousands of miles out to California, sleeping on the side of the road in the dirt. Trying to husband your resources feed your family until you got there. My dad told me he rode to California and back from Missouri on his mother's lap 3 times, going 30 miles an hour. Kids, parents, grandparents & aunts & uncles, in 2 trucks. His folks didn't have a flush toilet in the house until after he was in the airforce, 1950s. When he died in 2017 he was still happy to have a big glass of cornbread and milk for his dinner.
