One issue I've always had with hammers is that when I throw them hard, it hurts my shoulder. I've found ways of holding the disc (flexing my wrist) that mostly seem to protect my shoulder on

Hm, might be something to have a doctor check out, you shouldn’t have significant pain when throwing normally

It might be because you do not lean enough your body on the side. I think you put too much tension into your shoulder. If you lean a little, the throw is smoother. Hope it helps

Great video Kurt. I wonder what your thoughts are on a pivot step into a hammer. I used to pivot my right foot across my body with my left foot planted to get the right laser angle. Since your first video, I've been using the two footed stance. I wonder if you could try out the pivot step hammer and share your thoughts.

I don’t see any issue with you stepping over, I have thrown this throw crossing the right foot and landing across my body too. I would consider that a little more advanced and I always like to start with more basic form.

Hi Kurt. Could you please tell me what shoes you wear in these videos? I love the looks of these gray ones as well as the black/white gradient Nike's if you happen to know the names of them. Otherwise, do you generally prefer football, lacrosse, or another type for Ultimate? Thanks!

I’ve generally worn football cleats. Mostly Nike vapor TD’s throughout my career. But the ones I’m wearing are a Nike soccer shoe (I don’t recall which one but I got them on the Nile website probably 7 years ago(I’ve had them a while!). Very lightweight and I bought them for AUDL games because we played so much on turf I wanted a cleat suited more for turf.

When do you use this sort of hammer in a game? I see the point of a regular hammer to go over a stack or clump of players to your person or something (i.e. those crossfield endzone hammers or OI flicks you see all the time to someone uncovered way over on the other side), but it looks like this sort of laser hammer is too low for going over a group like that, so when do you pull it out?

When you don't need to go super far and need to get it there fast.

It’s not a throw I use too often in games but it’s most often used in a zone if you don’t have to throw over anyone to get it there quickly and you don’t want to allow the deep defender to make a run at it if it hangs too long in the air. Also, it can help if you’re throwing in wind usually if you’re throwing upwind it can help cut through the wind in a zone.
