I talk to this dude on Instagram!
i need a rather drastic inside out release angle (disc banking to the right) for straight forehand throws (non split grip). should the angle be any smaller than the right amount when im doing a mid-long range pass and the frisbee will bank left / go left. Is this how throws should be or am i doing something wrong?
I’m not sure I fully understand but on normal flick throws of 15-20 yards you should be able to release it flat and it fly flat. You may not be getting a clean release or enough snap
Yes I got a similar response from my friends either keep it flat or add more spin meaning push the inside of the disc more with the fingers inside mainly middle the reason it banks to the left is either your angle otherwise you have not enough spin to keep the shape So how do u exactly angle it correctly? Is it just disc parallel to ground and do a wrist flick with palm facing upwards at all times? Avoid releasing too late to overpronate? Also how about mid ranged throws like say 20-40 yards or even longer throws like 50+ yards? Wld I need to add the inside out then?
Great timing, we just dropped the documentary about mister Morri: th-cam.com/video/Kk9SjjzVQ5A/w-d-xo.html
LET'S GO!
That is the trailer, I haven't found the full documentary outside Patreon yet.
genuine doubt, wouldn't something like the air-bounce be useful in breaking the mark? like having a really low release and it floats up to the torso level of the receiver? I have seen it play out in tournaments sometimes, is is worth considering as a potential throw or is it too risky??
I believe it’s too risky
A low release is far more useful in a game (and is the basis of any air bounce anyway)
My experience is that throwing all kind of discs including golf discs, guts discs, DDC, SCF in the respective disc sports makes you a much better and versatile Ultimate thrower much quicker than sticking to the Ultrastar. And if you have that variety in your back pocket, adjusting to a new Ultimate disc is much easier.
I feel like this setup means the small open under (basically, your arse side) is way too unprotected - it's open throw and your cutter's already facing and able to attack that space if they commit hard enough. Sure, you can stop some angles physically, but to cover the short open under you have to turn basically 180... ? I feel like most players positioning their hips totally back to the open side just get blown past. How do you manage that?
This is direction for general defense but if you’re playing someone much faster/quicker then you may need to play a little farther off or if you can’t get your hips around quick enough then you may need change your positioning. This is designed In short spaces though and so if they were to run past you (unlikely) then they won’t gain much yardage anyways.
Huge. Thanks so much
You’re welcome
I get the same with Aria disc, it's hard to adjust when you're so used to the ultrastar flight path you really have to concentrate on it rather than being able to trust your trained instincts.
As someone who uses euro discs a lot I absolutely love them and prefer them to discraft ones. I think there a lot easier to grip and I find there more efficient for flicks and throws with that grip
The world needs more Geese!

Hey Kurt, thanks for sharing this tip, it's like getting a cheat code. Question, you mentioned that you want your dump throw to have touch/float, do you have any best practices for throwing touch throws? Do you throw them flat, or curved? How do wind conditions influence your throw selection? How does distance influence your throw selection? Thanks
one thing you guys did't mention is the potential growth of beach vs grass.. beach will always suffer with the lack of accessibility of beach fields in non coastal areas.. you will always find grass/dirt fields to play non-beach ultimate.. SoCal and parts of florida are only areas where you can literally play beach year round.. that said I can see even greater potential growth from SE asia regions.. with the needs for smaller teams and the abundance of beaches there..
One of the reasons Kurt doesn’t recommend it in games is in wind it can become very unpredictable. If that’s the only throw you’ve trained you’re not going to have a good time in the long run ;)
One just needs to do a low release with the nose up for the same effect, maybe adding a bit more touch. The issue with air bounce is that winds elevate the disc tremendously, and I found people tend to not be able to throw non-air bounce, which is a disaster.
ty this is so cool.
Glad to hear it!
Hey Kurt! Always enjoy watching your ultimate videos. Is there anyway you can make a video regarding FOULS between the mark and the thrower? Mark fouls AND thrower fouls? In particular, disputes I ALWAYS see, even at the club level, is the idea of the THROWER initiating contact with the frisbee on the mark's stationary hand / arm. In fact today, I had my hands and arms fully extended out, wasn't committing any marker violations (straddeling, wrapping, etc). I saw the thrower was about to launch a massive back hand....so I shuffled my feet to the right and kept my arms and hands in the same extended position.....the thrower was unwinding and the disk, while still in his hand, made contact where my stationary arms where. The disk fell out of his hands and it landed a few feet behind me. He called a foul on me. I contested, we talked. After the game I showed him sections 15 and 17 of the USA rule book, and it was confusing for him to understand since there's a lot of jargon in there. From my understanding of those two sections, I didn't foul. I gave him plenty of disc space, my hands / arms were already occupying that space that he threw into, and he made contact with me with the disc. If I'm wrong, definitely let me know, and I appreciate any feedback from you!
I can try to do a video on that but many times things happen so fast that it’s difficult to actually tell if who got to the space first, who was stationery, etc. Generally, those end up in being foul/contests from my experience but that doesn’t mean the thrower was necessarily in the wrong.
@kurtegibson I ended up chatting with Janna and Colin from the USA Ultimate rules committee, and they did a stellar job of breaking down the nuances and specific sections of the rule book for different scenarios that can occur in that situation. I have a better understanding now that, realistically, 95% of the time it's legit going to be a foul / contest situation on the mark. The thrower and mark are going for the same unoccupied space (even if one is SLIGHTLY there first). The last percentage points are the mark CLEARLY already occupying the space and straight up already being there. The convo definitely got me thinking about my own marking strategy: I'm probably a little too close in general, maybe I could SLIGHTLY angle my arms and hands behind me instead of being perfectly in a straight line. Those adjustments should reduce my chances of fouling, gives me more legitimacy in denying throwing lanes, and gives me more time to react and get a clean hand block.
Hey Kurt, Love the video. Im a bit of a shorter person and Im a handler for my highschool team, do you have any tips to help me deal with people taller than me while playing ultimate? thanks
If you mean from a throwing perspective, you should check out my video on how to create space against taller markers. th-cam.com/video/8Bjw845MKtA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=39_MHwARvU909XpQ

Thanks for all the tips shared!
Glad you found them helpful!
This helps a lot ❤
I mean, that was just kind of a bad floaty throw though, no? He had you beat.
When you're playing a normal force defense you're naturally allowing the defender space to the break side. In this case he tried to get to the open side, but couldn't so he took the open space to the break side. If the thrower can get a nice break off then there's not much you can do. In this case, the thrower didn't have any other options so he threw a break pass that hung in the air which is what I was banking on and I was able to go get it.
In watching some of these from Kurt, I think these actually only work if you're notably faster and more athletic than your check. The guy he was covering knew at full pace he couldn't out run Kurt, so he never commits to turning Kurt's hips. He's quick enough that it looks like good defense, but this is terrible defense if you're not outmatched on your check cuz they'll just attack the shoulder and blow past you (or, you do what he does and reach out and initiate contact / blocking foul them.)
I am pretty confident if I get a step on Kurt I'll keep my edge. In this case I cut up line because I was leaving the lane open for Lloyd. I didn't want the throw to go up I was trying to help center the disc.
@jlindqui152 makes sense, I don’t think I would have wanted that throw to go up either. The space was too small
@@squidge903 I don’t see it that way. Jeff is a very good player. If you’re notably slower than someone then it’s going to be difficult to play defense no matter the positioning, but this certainly will help. And there is no one on the field in this example that couldn’t get open at all because they’re outmatched athletically, everyone is fast.
That’s so cool 😮
Hey!! This is awesome!
I’ve been starting to learn how to throw discs. This helped me a lot.
Very helpful, I'm gonna have to break down every part of the flick in my practice to get better at this.
Great to hear, and good luck!

God bless, thank you for sharing.
Skeltor
is this something you should only do close to the endzone or is it applicable anytime you're covering the 1?
Good question, for the most part this is applicable all the way up the field because of you don’t adjust at all it can be easy for good throwers to throw those inside throws that are really open side breaks.
Kurt, I agree with Jay.
With any play analysis, I think that first the entire play should be shown, & then a more detailed moment-by-moment analysis should be done.
It’s one thing I consistently find a little frustrating about ultimate play analysis videos on TH-cam, which is why I don’t watch more of them.
Hey Kurt, so I'm wondering, at 3:00, if you prioritize covering the inside lane/the break side or the cut to the backfield dump space more. (Or if you even think this way...) It kind of sounds like you say you're covering both at one point, and giving up the long throw to the OS, but then if I get you, you also say when you're covering the backfield cut at 4:48, that you're happy to lose the race slightly to the break side because as you do here, you may get a floaty throw that you can get your hands on. So would you agree that you cover/deny the backfield more than the inside/break lane in this scenario? Thanks!
Continue producing such valuable content! That’s the best way to promote ultimate 🥏
Great analysis. Only thing I'd like is for you to play the clip through in full at the start, just so we can see the flow of the play and then focus on your defence knowing where the disc is. That would maybe ruin the big reveal of your huge block though! 😂
I usually do this but didn’t this time for some reason. Thank you!
Niiiice!
Awesome! Thanks for the drill! Is there any similar drill for forehand?
Great to hear! Yes, I’ll share drills for the forehand soon. Stay tuned
@@kurtegibson was it you that had the indoor one. On back. Just trying to get high spin low blade? I can't quite remember that one. On the backhand one: you can do it in a hotel corridor in case everyone leaving their cleats in the hall isn't making other people hate your team enough. Jk
@@bpc610 not sure I understand the first part.. but you can certainly do this drill in many places on flat ground!

I was waiting for someone to call that out 😂
What are your thoughts on playing farther off the front stack when the thrower is on the flick sideline that way no one move is enough to get you out of position? Is it because you would be out of position for the around throw?
Yes, this is possible in certain situations. I imagine if you were doing this the 1 in the stack wouldn’t really be a threat and likely not in a good position. You would probably want to be thinking about cutting off a throwing lane while still being close enough to engage if your offender made a cut
Thanks for the tips! I feel like I've always naturally set up in a similar position, but tend to disc check too frequently. Watching the eyes is a helpful cue.
I think it’s important to note that there are defenses that work against this kind of offense. Leo and Jacques take advantage of the most basic tenet of offense - In a match up where both players are similar in athleticism, the offensive player always has a slight advantage, and that advantage scales with the amount of open space the offensive player can work in. All of Brown’s cutters are very from the disc to give those one-on-one matchups so much room to work. This works exceptionally against teams like Colorado, Pitt, or Cal Poly who share a defensive philosophy of ‘win your matchup’ with athleticism and skill. They consistently leave their defenders on islands as a team ethos, rather than using a more complex scheme of switches and poaches. The majority of college teams are incredibly vulnerable to this two-man game because their defensive schemes are underdeveloped.
Incredible layout instinct and body control😮
