I've recently started remaking entirely some of the Techno tracks. A preview is already available here, every feedback is strongly appreciated! th-cam.com/video/bg4L4kb_3Dw/w-d-xo.html

I start hearing jazz 5 and I'm flying around in my old simcity cities again like I never stopped

Yeah the soundtrack of this game really hits hard, 'reminds us of simpler times I guess! Hearing one of those just makes you wanna jump back in

The latter half of Jazz 4 is a jam. Same with Jazz 5. I want to know who was playing the saxophone. I can hear some influences in there like maybe a little Spyro Gyra or Jeff Kashiwa or Gerald Albright. What a great OST. I always had the jazz station on when so would fly.

Same, I used to go back and forth between techno and jazz mostly.
I still don’t even know whether those were recorded or arranged on computer. Anyway, the composer of those tracks should be Jerry Martin, maybe if you shoot him a mail he will be able to tell you more about the sax!

@@bigballz4uYou are absolutely correct. The whole OST is a freaking jam. It’s too bad they don’t remake this game for today’s computers.I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

There are very few games I remember my experience of playing for the very first time, but SimCopter is one of those few, even a quarter-century later (!). I loaded the Tutorial city, and it was night, so it was "night" in the city as well, and Jazz 5 was the first song that played on the radio. It was simply magical. This game was very much the beginning of an amazing era for Maxis soundtracks, and I really appreciate the effort you've made to cut out the noise from those original tracks.
(And thanks for not including the commercials.)

nice try, but i think i prefer the originals. such a shame there's no high quality recording of this. what a waste. i like jazz6 so i just figured out the piano part from hearing it, and i think i could somehow replicate the other instruments, but not the sax. that's beyond me.

I understand, I’m sure it could be improved better 😅 I’ve got limited audio knowledge, but I tried my best! Some parts are badly altered by the treatment unfortunately..
Yeah, it really is a shame.. the worst part is that they lowered the bitrate on purpose so that it sounds like an actual radio...
That’s great if you can play it! I got into music a few months ago and those are tracks I hope I can somehow manage to cover one day 😄

    • @Rymac91

@@faxen2 I'm fairly certain they lowered the bitrate because of the limitations with audio compression Maxis had at the time. They used WAV files and just compressed the ever living crap out of them. I suspect the heavy bass was to make the music sound fuller on the rather basic PC speakers of the time and hide how compressed the game music was.
Later games like SimCity 3000 and The Sims (after Maxis was acquired by EA) used a proprietary audio compression format from EA which allowed them to store music in stereo with a much higher bitrate.
When SimCity 3000 Unlimited/World Edition came out, they had issues with storage constraints on the CD when trying to store all the music; they had to compress the audio of the original SC3K songs to lower bitrate mono audio and remove songs like SIM Broadway and Concrete Jungle to get the new songs to fit onto the CD.

      @faxen2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Rymac91 I've always thought it was due to space limitations too, but I read that on SimCopterX's Discord some time ago (the guy e-mailed the composer IIRC, asking if the uncompressed files could be found)
It may be true, even more so knowing that the radio ads joked about the low bitrate 😅
But for sure, using WAV, it would have been impossible to get a 100% "clean" audio without it being too heavy

Any chance of an upload of the individual Jazz tracks somewhere? Jazz 5 is a longtime favorite and your cleanup is excellent!

@@Towboatin I'm abroad for a few months and far from the PC where these are stored, but I'll try to remember that when I return home!
In the meantime, you could maybe download the whole thing and cut the other tracks with Audacity or some other software
