    Don't forget that these were massed men facing each other. Considerable numbers of archers facing off against considerable numbers of knights. There would be a hail of arrows hitting other knights, hitting their horses and seriously wounding them. It's not about killing the Knight in a single shot, it's about causing injuries and taking men out of the fight as early as possible.

      @@dequitemthis comment is also the counter that defeats your 30 Vs 30 "battle" ( more like skirmish) argument.
      An arranged fight of limited numbers is not the same as a full on battle, and logic dictates archers would be unwise in this situation, but it was a one off pre arranged fight/mêlée, more tourney than battle.
      To be affective archers need to be in large numbers

      I also remember reading about ancient slingers and their value in battles. That shite could be deadly and really bad for enemy morale with the zinging and banging on shields and hard to see coming.

    • @foldionepapyrus3441
      @foldionepapyrus3441 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@silky_merkin Indeed, in may way slingers are more dangerous than archers as the heavy rock blunt force is something even the most padded gambeson and helm can't actually really stop - it will stop it turning your skull into mush, but the impact forces are just too large and rapidly applied still (at least of the heavy so shorter range rocks). But a slinger needs much more space around them than an archer, so they don't work out nearly as well in the massed organised battles of Europe - even if you assume a huge increase in technical kills per shot something like 5 to 10 times less firepower and then a more spread grouping that will find it harder to protect themselves should a melee combat start...

  • @FelineLegion
    @FelineLegion 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +27

    That was awesome. In the end, it boils down to tactics a lot I think. Even as a walking juggernaut of steel; you don't wanna be caught out of your element. Even tanks in the modern age need the right support and strategy not to get wasted quickly but when the advantage of surprise and range goes away and you find yourself face to face with a martially trained steel ingot on legs? Say your prayers. Even the strongest card must be played right. I really appreciate the information we gain through channels like this.

      Also never forget luck comes into it as well, as we have seen live from the front in recent battles sometimes - a Bradley fighting vehicle has no business beating a T90 with its gun, but it has happened and even been caught on video. Skilfully handled by the Bradley crew to harass and focus fire in the right place giving them a higher disabling the tank and no doubt scaring the crew shitless with all those repeated hits, but still not a combat you expect them to score that technical kill and thus win...

    Can I add my two cents? First, in the battles of Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt, English archers were mixed and integrated with on-foot armored fighters. They were commanded, first by King Edward I, to carry wooden stakes to create obstacles against French Cavalry. So it was a mix of both ARMOR and BOWS, along with tactics, that gave the English the edge in the battles. Second, you are right to say the weak points are the best targets, that is why over the years armor evolved to cover these spots. If you look at the Churburg armor of the late 14th c. to early 15th c. and then look at the later armors of the 15th c., you can see the pauldrons extending to cover the armpits even when one moves their arms. The added skirts to the armor to tassets show us armor evolved to help compensate for this. There is a reason why armor lasted into the pike and shot era, unlike the longbow. Love both of your guys' content and always love incorporating it into my essays and writings. I'd like to get into my PhD in medieval history this year.

    Fun video lol… I also would point out that the English invested in masses of longbows/archers (and laws that encourages archery practice) not because they were the most effective thing on a medieval battlefield but because they were decently effective for a much cheaper cost than heavy cavalry and heavy infantry.
    France and other mainland European countries were in better relative geographical positions for trade and agriculture than England and therefore had more money with which to field more heavy cavalry and heavy infantry than the English. In engagements where the terrain and weather conditions did not hinder these units, English armies had quite the time dealing with the disparity. Remember, the 100 Years War did eventually conclude in favor or the French (though there were several factors at play there).
    It’s not really until ship fairing and gunpowder technology develop far enough along to increase the importance of maritime trade that England is put in a position where it can become a preeminent naval power and truly compete with France starting in the 18th century moving forward.

    Also side note, I demonstrated on my channel that good quality mail (crafted by Phil Parkes) can be defeated by a 75lb (55j of energy) English longbow with needle bodkins.
    But if we factor in energy drop off because my tests are done at 10m, then a 90lb bow would do the same at 40-50m 😊

    It is unrelated to European warfare, but in Japan there was a similar episode and it is recorded in the Mizuno Sakon Memorandum -覚書故水野左近物語.
    In 1563, during the Okazaki uprising, Mizuno Sakon (later known as Masashige), engaged in combat with Ōmi Fujiroku, the latter armed with a bow. He shot arrows against Sakon, but to no avail and the latter charged with his spear.
    As he managed to reach Fujiroku, Sakon spear got slided away against the enemy armor, who drew his sword and hit the helmet of Sakon.
    Fujiroku draw his sword and hit Sakon on the helmet, but to no effect as it was a well made helmet.
    Eventually Sakon drew his blade too and manage to win the fight and cut his opponent head.
    And in the annals of Kuroda family, in the battle against the Ming troops in Korea, Tachibana Muneshige is recorded to have been completely covered by arrows, resembling a "quiver", but with no wounds as the armor he was wearing was good.
    Hope it gives some interesting context!

    One thing neither of you mentioned that after seeing Tod's workshop and Mr Gibbs blow up heaps of arrows upon armour really does deserver a mention is the danger of the high energy splinters. Not going to kill easily, but minor injury, perhaps blindness, and just a reasonable chance to tangle up in the armours joints making moving harder are going to be a significant factor, perhaps not for you but for the poor sod who catches all those splinters your armour turned... Going to be rather hard to advance at the archers if you are too busy protecting your eyes or ignored the risks and did get unlucky.

    If these 2 actually fight in real life, this is what would happen: The bowman would only land glancing shots until the knight is within range of the bowman's final shot, then it will be really important for him to hit a gap or get a really good square hit with his bow on this final shot. More than likely it will not stop the knight and the knight will reach him and hack him to pieces.

    even if your armor is of "man at arms" quality, many man at arms wore beautiful surcoats over their harness. Many armors were also painted! so sure, it may look "plain" but it could have been painted with a saint, or the colors of a lord, or any number of things!

    Seems like we need the ultimate test. Dequitem starts 300m away and moves toward Dash while he shoots at him.
    I get that's dangerous! It's not a test to take lightly, but it would be the ultimate way to find out. I think the knight could close the distance before any serious injury, most likely even light injury.

    A quick aside. Chivalry was basically just how to not kill your allies on the battlefield, not a code of honor that prevented deception etc. The heart of strategy is deception. Ambushing is a standard tactic on all battlefields across all eras.

    One must also remember that Knights were trained as early as possible with their armor and most likely learned how to use movement and angling to negate a lot of arrow fire, nevermind the massive difference between shooting stationary armor plate and shooting plate that is moving and almost constantly being angled and sloped.
