Notice how Spock and Kirk look at each other for a second before Kirk steps forward with the questions. They always were on the same level. They both had the same question. Kirk was just always more willing to take the risks first. Poker, not chess, Mr. Spock. That was Kirk’s leadership style. And Spock’s devotion as a friend had him backing up Kirk when Kirk was knocked down by the lightning. Always the faithful friend will to step into danger with Kirk. 😊
And as the commanding officer, it's his responsibility to take the risks, as opposed to letting his crew take them for him. That's what makes him such a great Captain.

I remember seeing this at the drive in theater when it came out. I really enjoy this movie, one of my favorite Star Trek movies. Gotta love Sybok, he made the movie IMHO.

Kirk immediately picked up on this when "God" said he would make use of the Enterprise-- if "God" is all-powerful like God is purported to be, why would he need the Enterprise? (Hence the iconic line, "What does God need with a Starship?") And if Kirk wasn't sure before, he was when "God" asked who Kirk was-- God is all-knowing; He would have known who Kirk was, who they ALL were, before they even opened their mouths to speak. Another reason that some cite is the fact that "God" struck Kirk and Spock down for questioning him, something that the actual God would never do (and which I, personally, can't ever recall Him doing, at least in the Bible); God would simply prove that He is God-- some examples include Morgan Freeman's God doing so to a skeptical Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty, and George Burns' God doing it to a roomful of disbelieving doctors in Oh God!: Book II.

This is probably the greatest part in the whole movie. While this may not be a great movie, overall, it does have its moments, such as this part and segment, particularly.
I love this movie. I can't believe people insult it so much. The central themes are really fascinating and the plot between the characters is just great. It inspired me to get to know the person I called my best friend a lot better. To find out what hadn't been said. And the search for God? Can't get better than that.

Shatner himself stated that the budget for Star Trek V was way less the Star Trek IV and percentage wise less then the Wrath of Kahn. To make things worst ILM was not available for STV and the FX company they hired didn't get the shots done to Shatner's satisfaction but he was forced to use what they made do to time constraints.

Mike Vizioz If I recall correctly, Shatner himself wrote the script and directed the movie. Also, he is noted for his ego by some people. This just prooves it. My professor noted an idea proposed by Grant Morrison; the idea that perhaps what we choose to believe in does not so much matter as much as wether or not we draw meaning and stability and morals from believing in something. I say that's reasonable Through science we know that the cosmos had a beginning. That means all we can observe in the universe, time space and matter (all of nature) had a beginning. On topic, It's like investigating a crime scene, evidence in the scene make certain attributes clear about the cause, then you cross reference those attributes with known person(s)/object(s) that are described to have those attributes and rule out ones that don't.
Example:
"Evidence shows this 20 foot wall was scaled. We should question people who are known for scaling tall objects, if it's just rumor"

Shatner himself stated that the budget for Star Trek V was way less the Star Trek IV and percentage wise less then the Wrath of Kahn. To make things worst ILM was not available for STV and the FX company they hired didn't get the shots done to Shatner's satisfaction but he was forced to use what they made do to time constraints.

Mike Vizioz If I recall correctly, Shatner himself wrote the script and directed the movie. Also, he is noted for his ego by some people. This just prooves it. After all, he had entire universe of topics, but the one he took was "I fought God and won!"

On the topic of religion, and God, and fiction (not to imply that the former two are fiction, just so we're clear) I had a very insightful discussion in a college course earlier today.
My professor noted an idea proposed by Grant Morrison; the idea that perhaps what we choose to believe in does not so much matter as much as wether or not we draw meaning and stability and morals from believing in something.
Just adding some new perspective (hopefully).

I say that's reasonable
Through science we know that the cosmos had a beginning. That means all we can observe in the universe, time space and matter (all of nature) had a beginning. We also know that these things are co-dependent to the extent that they can't possibly exist without each other.
That said, whatever the cause of the nature is must be beyond nature, as something can't create itself as that violates causality.
The only concept that is describe to be beyond time/space/matter is a God

This was a vastly underrated and I daresay not fully understood philosophical question. It wasn't just about exposing a false god. It was also asking why we always ascribe human neccesities to something that by definition, could not be anything remotely human.
This film is pretty low on my list of Star Trek movies, but pretty high on my list of Shatner fun.
