I took a title in order to remain different to strive to be something better. It's difficult though I have not chosen an easy path. So much of my time goes into researching parts of this world and finding what fits that, what fits me. It would be so easy to just do what everyone else is doing, but that would feel wrong and eventually frustrate me to the point of complete self-destruction again.
At the end of the day, I'm still just a crappy magician dressed up under layers of pretentious narcissistic bullshit. But i'm trying to be better.

Definitely looking forward to learning whatever you feel like teaching with cards but I gotta say, I love when you do these honest thought/what's on your mind kinds of videos! The thought process and particularities that make even the simplest tricks come off hella strong are what really speak to me and keep me going further and further down the rabbit hole. Your channel has been a go-to for me when it comes to improving my own thought process for tricks and, occasionally, even for my day to day being. Thanks for being you and sharing that with the world!

I use magic to start conversations. When I’m nervous, I’ll do a trick. They’ll either be amazed, angry, or indifferent. I’m not a magician. I am the world’s okayest trick performer. But doing those tricks start conversations. I try to infuse comedy into my failures. People see me and make hundreds of mental judgements before I open my mouth. I just try to leave them with positive thoughts or bewilderment. I try to improve that moment of the day for them.

I think that magic is incredibly similar to music, in so many ways. It makes sense that I focus on both equally.
But it makes me think, magic has theory similar to music, but it is quite disorganized in comparison. In music, you can't just start playing and creating epics right off bat, you need the rudiments first. I don't think the rudiments are defined well enough for the starting (or even intermediate) magician.
Being said, I have watched all of your old stuff. The depth you would explain a simple technique such as the gambler's cop, was exactly what I needed. Definitely a go to tech, thanks to how you explained things.
Daniel, I think you could do a series on these rudimentary techniques, that many would prosper from.

I appreciate these conversations. The conversations I enjoy the most are with other artists-actors, writers, musicians, and comedians. Most of the themes revolve around the essence of art, the essence of man, statism, and freedom.

I would never call myself a magician, I don't go out and show some one something, I am too scared to do that. I just practice for me, because I like it. So I would never call myself anything, I am just a person who spend some time learning something wich others haven't. Does that make me special? Definitely not.
Would be awesome to learn something about the psychology of tricks and no the standard things like if you want the spectator look away from the hands say their name. I want to learn how to make a trick a beautiful peace of art wich the spectator can appreciate more than just pick a card now I'm gonna find it, cause I'm so good...

Man , i was like you . The key to perform to people like if you are performing in your room for yourself is confidence .
When you’re gonna get used to perform to people that you don’t know and do this many times. Then you’ll see the reaction of people to your magic and have the confidence that you’re gonna need .
      Good luck bro.

Daniel, these advice videos are INCREDIBLY useful for me, especially being someone who used to do magic as a kid and is trying to get back in to it as a young adult. I'd love to see videos on misdirection, and performance theory if you have any thoughts to share. Also, a video on structuring a routine for working magicians (like at restaurants, pubs, etc.) would be beneficial for someone like me. Thanks for listening, please keep up the work with the amazing content!

Dude, I'm a couple of months old with these questions.
How should I approach, how should I speak, tell stories to show them in a magic effect. Even though I've been studying in this world for 2 years, and knowing in different ways, what I'm looking for is my way. And I am in a temporary conclusion that they are testing in practice the various forms that can fit me

  • @MrRichreynolds

Hey Daniel, I agree with exactly what you are saying. The only problem is that I’m a professional ‘magician’ and I have to label myself with a name the helps people, who are looking to book me, what I do and the experiences I give people.
I often get people saying “I don’t like magicians but I liked you”. I love this as I see it as a compliment but it’s a problem too. To some people ‘magician’ means an arrogant person who performs crap, boring, out of date, magic tricks.
As yet I haven’t discovered a solution to my problem of escaping this image but being able to effectively market myself.
Hopefully that makes some sense lol 😀

Thank you so much for your raw honesty and well said thoughts on identity. Whether you’re a famous magician, or a successful/famous artist, or a famous/successful financial advisor, or simply a person who doesn’t have a job but has passion, we all deal with that identity question in so many different stages and in so many iterations of becoming who we’re meant to be at various points in our life and you really said it beautifully, and I don’t want to put you in a box, but as a very successful and well known magician, you’ve given a lot of help to those of us who aren’t necessarily looking to emulate you, although I would desperately love to be healthy enough to work on becoming a magician and I would love to say “one day I’ll be a successful magician” and while I love watching and learning card magic tutorials from a former professional gambler who turned one love into another larger love of expression and technique and creativity and wit putting all of that together to become one iteration of Daniel Madison the magician, which is just a name but a name that holds a lot of meaning for those of us that recognize that name, I am really looking to you more as an artist and wanting to be able to take my main passion (writing) and make a living out of it without having to change who I am and continue to discover who I am. You put it all much better than I just did, but you really did hit a nerve and a point that anyone, regardless of profession, can relate to, and that’s “who am I? And is that person a genuine honest piece of me? Or is that person an act I’ve developed to advance my career/increase my popularity/protect myself from getting hurt/please my family/fit into a category label comfortably/ pass for something I’ve not yet become/pass for someone I thought I wanted to be/survive a bad place I’m in/survive a dangerous situation I’m in emotionally or physically/etc. and are any of those reasons good reasons for keeping up that act and mask that I put on daily? Are any of those reasons still relevant? Have they changed me at my core? Is that necessarily a bad thing? Some masks/characters/affects/whatever you want to call it aren’t always a bad thing, like picking up a certain idiom from a friend or someone closer like your mom and you happen to like it, it all doesn’t need to go, but it’s sort of like spring cleaning at some point, isn’t it? You need to go through who you are, and what you like and don’t like, and where that came from/why you were that iteration of yourself doesn’t matter as much as “is it something I want to keep or put in the “donation/trash” pile? I find myself doing that a lot and looking back, at various points from when we’re 5 to when we’re a teenager and all the way through to wherever you are now, periodically our identity needs a spring cleaning, and sometimes there’s nothing for that “throw out/donate” pile, which is great, and sometimes there’s a ton that’s gotta go and those are the times where life feels heavy and the weight of it feels so immense that you want to give up or burn the whole bloody pile rather than actually go through it all, but I think that’s when we become the best version of ourselves, or at least we’re on the right track.
Thank you for sharing all of that and I’m sorry, because it sounds like a lot of trauma happened (I’m very clueless when it comes to the lives of famous people, so I apologize if I missed something very obvious that happened to you, it’s out of pure naivety and not meant to be rude at all.) but for what it’s worth, you sound much stronger and better for it, and thank you for making the rest of us, because I really do think everyone goes through this in various ways, but thank you for putting it out there so those of us going through that don’t feel quite so alone. As always you’re a wonderful inspiration of creativity and what it means to be an artist/magician. Thank you for sharing this video. I always look forward to them. If you ever read this Russian novel of a comment (I know I’m loquacious but even for me that was an absurd amount of blathering on without any conceivable filter, so apologies for that but if you actually read this whole thing, the main take away is: thank you, or “FANKS”.) lots of love from Hillary in the burbs of Philly PA USA.)

Incredible thoughts, makes me think about an occupation like what if there was someone who was a human as there occupation? Thats sounds like a dystopic world almost where people would come and watch you be “human” or “you” on a stage. But thats almost how things are... huh! Interesting too because people just naturally mimic what they like in others! Each person is the sum many bits and peaces of other people, both unoriginal and also completely unique

I had an interesting experience last night. I was at a Halloween party with my closest friends and I did some sleight of hand magic and got mediocre reactions. But then I showed one friends ,who also does magic tricks, a trick using the advocate. Afterwards, i revealed to him the method and his reaction was the best I've seen in a while. He was dumbfounded.
As for your question, I consider myself a magic enthusiast.

I identified as a magician for a short period but then avoided it due to the painful connotations that came with the title. I found people wasnt as interested in a magician and “magic tricks” having a conversation with someone and then just bouncing off of a topic and showing them something they’ve not seen before nor likely to see again, was far more powerful. They remember you as a person and never feel like they’re having to watch another “magic trick”
Hitting someone unexpected is far superior. Great video D.

This content was so perfect at such a poignant time in my life. this is my old channel and I am about to launch a new channel on Halloween. It is about me discovering who I am as a person after the loss of my marriage and this shop in the same month. Its taken me several months of deep thought and I realized I had never told my story, I just wanted to be known . The stripping away of ego created the avenue to bring my experiences to the world an I hope my stories inspire others as much as yours do me.
    Phanks for being Daniel Madison!!

Daniel, can you teach a deception that lets the spectator pick their card, and put the selection in the deck, and control it. Next ask the spectator what position the card is in and you deal to that position and that is their selection. Again, I ask if you can put that deception on your channel, it sounds hard but you know the knowledge and patience to make it seem easier. Anyway your choice, hope you get this, and tell Charlie I say hi

You just described my drama when I had to write resumes in my life. Then I decided that I'd stop writing them altogether and just focus on working for myself rather than finding a formal job. Never been happier. But then again it's hard to get non-creative people to understand what we do. We're doing what I like to call "invisible work", and to many people out there it just seems like we do nothing. It's kind of sad in a way. Thank you for this video, Daniel. I can certainly empathise with you because I’m a carer for my elderly mother who needs almost constant help with even the most basic day to day living tasks so I know how it can get you down and how important some kind of release is, for me it’s having something to look forward to when I order new decks for my collection and the enjoyment I get from just looking at them or learning a few basic sleights and tricks . I don’t have the problem of someone trying to stop me from enjoying my hobby I just get “ yeah that’s nice “ if I try to show her a trick, thing Dynamos nan level of enthusiasm when he does magic for her 😀, all I can suggest is that in my experience I just do sleights for me so just practice, practice, practice and then practice some more and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing something that is mentally good for you then hopefully your wife will come to understand how important it is to you and leave you to it. Sorry if that was a little rambling but hopefully you will get what I mean.

Being your self is vital i find no matter the cost. I would say add titles only when comfortable with its definition. Further if you feel a title to be mostly true don't be afraid to be unique and a leader in that grouping. I thank each of you and the host of this channel for your replies. I still practice cardistry as said for my self. I work in card magic every once in a while. I don't let people, even my wife change me. I love the collection as well, when i get opportunity. I also love cataloging what new cards come out. There are many i will one day own that i note now. Fireflies are my newest: ig @thearcheratthecardtabl3. For any who care. I'm not the best but it makes for easier communication in the cardistry community.

Really nice talk daniel, love this! I for my part have to say that I never had a gig and I never performed for strangers, at the moment I'm still to afraid to do that... But still I won't call myself Magician, I had a similar thought going through my head often when I thought about my Future. With the word "Magician" there is always a stereotype coming with it and I hate that, not every Magician is the same. Just as with any other profession.
Now to come to your question at the end, I would really enjoy a tutorial on how you invent an effect. I don't know how to do that, I'm always just playing around with cards and eventually I come up with a slight, but say I have those moves and the sleight moves, how can I come up with a nice routine? That's something I would really enjoy to watch, else maybe a tutorial for a peeking method. Thanks Daniel, keep doing your thing, you are rocking it!

Still do these types of videos I like them. I know you said cards but I’d like to see you teach your favorite non-card trick... until then I’m Dane Valnes🤟🏼
