Im a college student from Illinois looking to become a clinical therapist and also have a passion for music. Ive been watching your videos for years nows and have always found inspiration in your music, life journey, and words of wisdom. Keep up the great work!
I saw George Clinton when I was a teenager, back when all I knew about him was that he was a funk musician that took some acid and was blown away. Been a huge fan ever since. Must have really been something to see him in his heyday
Maggot Brain trips me out. Bought it used a while back. Had heard some tracks back in the day on FM, but didn't expect the intensity of that record. When I play it I wish there was a side 3. Well keep an eye out for some of their other records. Thanks. Sorry to hear the sad news. Gunna stick a big Q Tip in my nose now. Live in Long Beach CA. 1 in 4 ppl testing here are Covid positive now. Cough.
Delighted to hear you talk about Scriabin. His 'Poem of Ecstasy' is a beautiful piece of music. Speaking of therapy, there's a quote by the Buddha (which you're probably aware of), which goes as follows: "Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional." For me, the means by which I reduce suffering is to simply acknowledge it, and welcome it, rather than offering resistance and allowing it to dominate my thoughts. On a separate note, I came up Covid positive yesterday, after avoiding it for almost two years (I work in health care, btw). It's not too bad. About the same intensity as a very shitty cold. I've no doubt that the vaccines have hugely limited its impact. There was a tightness in my chest for a few days before it went full blown, which I'd never experienced with a regular cold or flu, so I would urge people who haven't already done so to get vaccinated. It's not about 'choice', it's about common sense. Big Yes to 'Maggot Brain'!
My girlfriend at the time, Diane (she named The Muffins and made the ‘Monkey’ postcard that went in the Manna/Mirage album), had that Blues Magoos album and the 1st Soft Machine album. I heard them both for the first time there.
Wow bro are you serious that's 7 hours damn now I know they played three hours before they even used to have the video on TH-cam where they play 3 hours and they took one song out so it cut it down to like 2 hours and 58 minutes but damn 7 hours that's a long concert!!
I was a bit of a troubled teen back in the day and was appointed a social worker for my rambunctiousness. She went to Woodstock (showed me the photos) 20 years earlier, introduced me to some great music and miraculously removed my head from arse all at the same time. One a few I dearly wish I could have thanked before they departed. Cheers, another great video
Thanks so much for your mention of DBT too. That means more than you know Dereck. Your compassion and care are ever present. My brother and oldest sister-in-law are both psychiatric social workers, and they work with DBT daily.
Yes paper filters collapsing ugh, had that happen 😐.....oh geez more losses 🙏🏻...Michael Lang n Calvin Simon...🙏🏻 Interesting plays Dereck, you speak so well on life issues ..... thank you my friend- Lisa 😎🎶
Wow...was TH-cam roaming....And came on to you channel ...AGAIN....was a faithful follower a few years back...In fact you even replied to me and we had a short exchange.....So GLAD to see you...Back...or you probably never left....Anyhow...Happy New Year my Brother....
When the Mothers Fillmore 1971 album came out in the summer of 1971, I heard a DJ playing through several tracks from side one, and then segued into "Maggot Brain," which I had never heard before. I thought I was still listening to Zappa! Love Scriabin...I have studied his "mystic chord" and stolen some ideas from it. Be well Dereck!
Gotta cheak that Scriabin. I do have thank you tho for turning me onto Hector Berlioz 'Symphonie fantastique' and Stravinski's 'Scheherazade' by the Chi town symphony Org.Both outstanding.
Good Afternoon Dereck, Many believe, as you know: that the 60s died at Altamont. I can see the point, with all that when down, at that gig, but I've always thought that the end of the 1960s morphed into the early and then mid 1970s and all the great music that followed. We here in Australia had our own Woodstock type event in 1973. Although less prestigious, nonetheless "Sunbury", still stands as an Australian youth coming together to celebrate music and art in an open field, as it was then. You just made me pull my copy of Free Your Mind, and then Psychedelic Soul afterwards. I must say I have been playing predominantly Black Music over the past year. I mainly stay away from people as much as possible, I'm not being nasty folks, but I believe its the best way to individually, attempt to beat this Beast of a virus. The virus itself "apparently", will be with humanity for a few thousand years in one form or another. The answer lies, from the research papers I have read: with vaccination and less virulent iterations of the virus. Humanity will learn to live with this beast, unfortunately however, it will take another two years. Normal, went two years ago. Stay safe Dereck. Thank you for all you do here.
Many years ago, my parents where visiting friends in Nottingham, UK. This guy came around to see them, I didn't know who he was. Some time later, I asked who that was guy, they said Alvin Lee from Ten Years After, man, that was wild.
hey dereck, think i remember that party. although i enjoyed dancing to the music, also disturbed and frightened me a little due to the way the party goers reacted to the music. it was bizarre stuff. i like wearing masks. people are nasty and careless during interactions. masks are wonderful shields! be well
Wow I can't believe Calvin is dead I know exactly who Calvin is he also would play percussions every now and then he sings on the album let's take it to the stage that one particular track the song it's familiar wow I didn't know that
In Russia, a country based on the collective, musicians were much better than orchestras, and the opposite phenomenon could be studied regarding to the occident where freedom should benefit individuals. That's a curious thing to think about ThxD 🌏/🌍/🌎
The last Funkadelic Album you shared that you mentioned was not that good has a Famous Drum Beat Sample that Eric B and Rakim used and MANY MANY others did also.
I know on one of your vids you discussed not wanting to do patreon, but have you thought of offering music lessons? Given your knowledge of music and your original compositions, people might want to pick your brain. Maybe you have ideas for improvising, creating music, approach, or even an in depth discussion of the customer's favorite albums and give recommendations. You could have a pre-screening as well(i.e. the customer tells you exactly what they expect from the lesson and then you would tell them if you would be able to accommodate them)

Maggot Brain is such a great album, and a great title as well.

Been so long thinking about buying Maggot Brain, but still haven't got myself to the record store. Fleamarkets take too much of my time.

Thank you!
Yes. RIP Calvin Simon. Your contribution to music was definitely major.
Yes it's a good sound🎧,,,,,, back in the days, of vinyl,,,,, 👍😁🇺🇲
Good words for easy people! Thanx
Scriabin’s Poem of Ecstasy is one of my favourite symphonic works to listen to and play, Dereck. Loved seeing your copy of his 2nd symphony!

I didn't know he also organized a festival in Miami the year before -- with a lineup just as impressive.

Hello brother Michael!
That excellent prescription to understand and accept reality seems as little used as the kindness required as a remedy for it.
Hi Dereck Thumbs up!
I have that funkadelic on CD! I found it at my antique mall! Thumbs way up! Trish
Love this guy he is like me who don't listen to rap
good to see some blues magoos talk, they really a cut above the rest of the contemporary psych bands

Danny Tanner aka Bob Saget (the Dad from Full House) died too.
I saw George Clinton walking in Central Park years ago.
