RIP Phil Lesh, bass player who definitely made an impression on my mind…. Very melodic, wandering across the neck beautifully, true improviser

So glad I got to see TGD - last one was at Giants Stadium in '90 (a mescaline show for me, too) and saw various iterations of their bands in the last few decades, with crowds of 200 to 20,000 people. Love them or hate them, there's no denying that they were a vital piece in the puzzle of musical history. And Phil was one of the best people - kind, giving of his time and talent to others, and with a bassist's vision like no other. Fare Thee Well, Brother Phil.

Nice tribute to Phil Lesh! Growing up in the SF area I got to see the Dead in concert many times throughout the years As a bass player yourself you recognize how good Lesh was He had a different style of playing the instrument and Garcia once said he would solo off Phil’s bass lines He was very underrated in my opinion

At Tinley Park, Lollapalooza 1, was the most psychically connected crowd I've ever been in. It was raucus. Joyful. People were hearing a pantheon of beloved acts past and present, some folks tossing others up into the air with blankets, Zendik folks handing out their zines and tapes, friends in deed passing pipes. The music was terrific! Each band seem to build upon the last. I wish The B-hole Surfers had played last because they had such crazy light shows and science films. Siouxie and Banshees were the best of the day, and we missed Rollins. We arrived eight strong in VW Bus by classic Wisconsin type roadtrip. Stevens Point to Kankakee to Chicago, then back to Point. Three of us drove all the way up to the "last" Mole Lake Bluegrass Festival. And That party made Lollapalooza look like an after church coffee social.

love your description of your 73 concert experience. i had a similar one in ,77. they did a dark star > the eleven > dark star that was otherworldly.

my first two Grateful Dead shows were in Omaha at the Music Box in February & April 1969 about the time they recorded Live Dead. January 1970 I moved to the SF Bay Area.

The Dead in the early 1970s used the Wall of Sound. Designed by audio engineer Owsley “Bear” Stanley, 600 speakers and Phil’s bass was modded to manipulate it, I wonder if you were there to hear that. . Same time period, that would be amazing.

Listening to you while I rearrange my studio. Phil was so unique. Saw him a bunch of times. But not in 1973, wow! Glad you had a good gig last night. Take care, sir.
