    I think it's interesting that "Lived-In Luxury" is now a trend. It seems like a panicked response from brands trying to keep up with the popularity of thrifting and second-hand shopping. "Please buy our brand new and expensive offers that are made to look old instead of more affordable pieces that have already proven to stand the test of time." Buying secondhand has finally shed the negative connotation of poverty. It's now something (most) people think of as cool and eco-conscious. In response, brands are bringing in the "luxury" aspect to reinforce those class dynamics.

    In 1996 I wore a black dress with a sheer overlay to my senior prom. Fast forward to 2024, I was scavenging the Internet with the help of my 15-year-old daughter for a formal dress to wear for a work function, and saw so many similar dresses online. I remembered that I had worn that dress, and I probably had it somewhere in the back of my closet after all these years. I found it in a crumbled heap in the bottom of a garment bag. Luckily, I was able to squeeze into it, and with the help of some hefty boob tape, I wore to my event. I was so happy to be able to wear it again after 28 years!

And if you want the sturdier, higher quality flip-flop, ok - you fork over $39.99.

    I feel like another component of an item having longevity is whether it can receive care. Meaning it’s made of leather or wool or linen that can take on a patina but it also has the ability to be revived. You can condition or wash it and bring it back to life. These trendy items, especially shoes, made out of flimsy fabrics or plastics can’t receive care. I’ve learned this with bags too. My first work bag was “vegan” leather aka plastic. So once it started looking worn there was nothing I could do to bring it back. So now as I’m more thoughtful with my purchases I’m also asking… can this item receive any kind of care? Is it a material that I can take a little effort and make it look good again? If that answer is no then my answer is no too. It helps keeps the trends at bay since they’re usually made of materials that only last a season.

      I was thinking something similar - my favourite pieces in my wardrobe are the ones with that same reviveablility, even/especially if the repair is visible. I have a lovely pair of 1980s levis that I've repaired a few times and the slight textural difference and rumple of the near-invisible darning makes them really special and one of a kind. They fall perfectly on my body because my body has worn them in!

    • @MD-cs7jd
      @MD-cs7jd 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Precisely this! And that feeds into why a patina or marks of wear would be appealing in the first place, they are quiet luxury in true form: a hint that the piece worn is so well made that not only can it, but it HAS, withstood the test of time and fleeting fashion

    To be fair to ballet flats, real ballet shoes also get a beating. In fact, as soon as you get them you're supposed to cut them, burn them, glue them, and re-sew them to fit your foot shape. So in that regard the fashion equivalent is right on the money.

    I remember the 2010s when everybody had smelly flats. They're like gremlins. You need rules to keep them nice: wear once a week to dry out, have multiple pairs, wear socks, get insoles for them to change regularly, etc. Most shoes (not just flats) are made flat inside, for the wearer to add custom insoles. Who knew that was a thing? I didn't.

    This feels like my version of call-and-response in a lively sermon. "Ballet flats get manky too fast!" (Congregants: "They sure do!") "Patina comes from age and wear, not from environmentally reckless pre-distressing! "("Amen!") "Remember the last time an It Color that was wrong for you slid out of favor, leaving you with items that make you look ill?" ("Singi it!!") So much nodding.
    I'm intrigued by intentional looking combinations of sheer and opaque. I could see a garment with an opaque bodice and sheer sleeves in the same color. Or a skirt that's opaque to mid thigh and sheer from there to hem. I plan to break out my sewing machine. For me the key will be sticking to one solid, neutral color.
    We know that humans are attracted to novelty even when it contributes to waste. I see one silver lining: trends also provide opportunities for each of us to find whatever specs suit our individual needs best. High rise pants. Low rise pants. Tunics, shoulder padded jackets, meaty flats, kitten heels, block heels, floaty dresses, body con dresss. Each cycle brings to the marketplace a style that some people have been waiting for, and will hold onto, for years.

    As my mostly second-hand wardrobe gets leaner and more cohesive, one of the things I value aesthetically is the garments have acquired patina, and I don't have to imagine what an item is going to look like after it's no longer new. I now have a lovingly tended collection of thrifted vintage cashmere and wool (it's cold here!), most of which were made years/decades ago and still look fantastic. I could never afford to buy these items new, and they wouldn't be the quality of the older pieces anyway.

    • @TheBaumcm
      @TheBaumcm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      There is definite advantage for pieces like that which are thrifted. One, you don’t cry every time it gets a small snag😂. Two, you don’t feel as precious about wearing it because the actual cost isn’t that high per wear. Three, you already know what it looks like laundered. Four, you know it’s made to last, especially if made years ago. I hunt cashmere and silk at thrift and have found some truly lovely pieces, which once refreshed, look brand spanking new. Have a giant cashmere Lord and Taylor scarf $6 and I love it!

    I really never knew there was SO much hate and passionate feelings towards ballet flats until I've gotten more into watching actual fashion videos this past year... I've been wearing them since high school and I think they're comfortable, cute and easy. There are some of my flats that get grimey based on the fact that they are my "gardening" or "everyday" comfy flats and I have others that i specifically don't wear in the garden but still use them to bits and I personally still think they look cute. I'm team ballet flat for sure lol.

    As I get older, I'm definitely embracing the wider "barefoot" flats. My Xero flats may not be elegant or cute, but they allow my foot to spread, flex, and move, which makes them extremely comfortable! Sometimes function does win out. Ive only had them a season, but they do seem well made and I have no reason to believe they won't last years. Sure there are times when I want cuter flats, but I can (and do) find those for $6 at my local Goodwill. Thrift life for the win. Most times though, I want to take better care of my feet, so the Xeros win for that.

      it actually occurred to me this winter, that i hate the decorations/aesthetics around winter and spring way more than i dislike the actual seasons, as in how nature looks and feels at this time (in the northern hemisphere at least). i now realise that my disgust for the former stems from how horribly wrong it gets the latter. which are actually my favourites!
      i love the dark, wet purity and the powerful stormy mystery! and the few (!) sprinkles of (often weirdly tinged) colour in a sea of everchanging texture! the cold sting of ice and snowflakes, the treacherous volatility and stark monochromatics of first blooming flower carpets amongst naked stems and branches!

    Hey, Hannah! I've had the Everlane Day Glove on and off my wish list for awhile, and finally booted it off the list for good once I realized that it looks pretty busted up after being worn in when I checked pictures on second-hand websites. (I've got a pair of the Day Heels and they are sooo pinchy near my big toe, so I really can't recommend it in good conscience.)
    I decided to purchase Margaux's The Pointe Flats instead, which fit the shape of my feet perfectly, and they've held up exceptionally well through pretty regular wear. I take good care of all of my shoes, but I guess they have the "hard shell" you were describing with the Chanel flats, and are decently well-made for a fraction of the price, which probably helped them last longer.
    If you are trying to avoid leather, I also tried Vivaia's Aria Flats and those turned out to be pretty soft and comfortable for me. I took them on vacation and practically lived in them, and they're still in fantastic shape. However, I'm pretty skeptical about companies that sponsor every single influencer out there, so definitely shop wisely lol.

    @flats: For a longer shoe-lifespan, a shoesole has to be a bit longer & "poke" out of the shoe. It creates a buffer, when your shoe is hitting things, and the leather of the shoe gets less scratched & looks longer fresh. None off the flats (not even the Chanel ones) have that quality. In the Ballettstyle thats not included. Also what you need a "hard" heel-backside piece, otherwise they get wide over time & you slip out.

    Honestly, I think the idea of luxury goods that come out of the box with preexisting patina is a hit with some buyers because they have SO many items that nothing gets worn in; these items are not worn frequently enough with a large wardrobe (and with people just not in the habit of repeating outfits as much as someone with lesser means) to gain patina. And honestly, there's an appeal to it (with thrifted goods as well, of course) that something that's already worn it doesn't need you to be precious about it. I do like that aspect, too.

    The moment the Blue Magic title card appeared on screen, I had a vicious Devil Wears Prada flashback. Cerulean sweater for spring? Groundbreaking.
    But, on a different note, Hannah, I think you could wear misty blues with your coloring. Especially with the Merit lipstick and ponytail in this video. And a mini leather skirt? It would be a very sweet retro look. I know it's not your vibe, but it would work harmoniously, I feel. Add a matching color block eyeshadow look, and it could be in Vogue

    In the 2000s, I used to wear large brooches on all my vests and button-downs and I’ve been searching the net for large flowers on pin-backs for several years now which is why I’m excited that these come back, although in a more layed-back style than I would style it.
    Haven’t bought an uber large one yet but I look into making one pretty soon. I’m into all kinds of embellishments and can’t wait to have more textures in my wardrobe!
    Thanks for the great video as always Hannah. Haven’t watched you in a while and realized that I need to check your recent videos too 💌
