Quantizers is what finally got me into modular. I enjoyed exploring sounds, but I always fell short when it came to producing music that I was happy with. Once I discovered quantizers, a whole world opened up. The music that comes from ordered chaos is wonderful. Seeing this gives me so many ideas!
Really liked the video, and the sounds you were getting. Also I'm always psyched to see the SWN in videos. It inspires me to use it as more than an expensive drone machine.
Excellent explanation of quantizers! I love the continuously variable signals of analog gear but sometimes they need to be tamed. It's nice to be able to force a specific scale on a random voltage. MIDI offers precise values but at the cost of flexibility. The next version of MIDI should offer finer grained resolution for signals and provide a better blend between the digital and analog worlds. Personally I'm firmly in the hybrid camp with modular, semi-modular and digital gear and I love it all. They each have their strengths and weaknesses.
Great video. I soon realized I needed a quantizer for my modular setup, but I wanted something that would grow with my setup, so i went overboard and got a sinfonion, best decision ever.
I had no idea O_c had so many useful things. I thought it was some convoluted next level module but clearly not. Also I love how you moved from Ambient to DnB....Smooooove...:-)
got 2 ornament and crime. one with hemisphere and one with the standard firmware. should be powerful! at the same time stuff to learn for the next 5 years :-/ thanks for this video jeremy!
I got an O_C a couple of weeks ago and using Quantermain with the inbuilt shift registers was deeply satisfying into the four oscillators of my Matriarch! Was using Pam’s for Euclidean rhythms into each trigger. O_C & Pam’s are an incredible duo… Although, I’m going to have to buy another to run the Hemispheres firmware. Great vid man, cheers 👍
Nice video. I use Quantermain not so much as a quad pitch quantiser but as a quad S&H. So I can decouple the sequencing of gate and pitch but can get long not without the pitch chancing while the gate is high. I have to multiple each gate for this. But I still have the ability to quantise the pitch with O_C.
Sa-weet, sensei! So good, as usual, but particularly liked your editing on this one, with the close-up cuts and panning (a new thing?). You were channeling such a Radiohead vibe there for a bit. Thanks for being an inspiration and showing how it's done.
Very cool. I'd like to see some one-shot envelopes be triggered to add some interest to note length and other things. Hmm, now to find some Envelope Generators with one-shot capability!
I’m glad you did this with the ALA uO_C, because I’ve just bought the very same module and forgot to ask which firmware it was running. I’ll assume it was the default… Also- I recently sold my SWN, and still don’t regret it, even after this video. Still a one-trick pony to my ears.
Yes, it's funny how Hemispheres has sort of eclipsed the original firmware in many people's minds. I think one of the main brains behind the original said they'd even stopped supporting it now, which is a little sad. Anyway, when I bought my O&C I asked the seller if they could load Hemispheres onto it. Luckily, he told me to try the original which he really recommended. And, he was right, I love the interesting stuff found on the original, so much so that I still haven't got round to trying Hemispheres. But I will at sometime in the future ... when I get bored with the original ;-).
I have an O_C, and I need a 1U one for the Intellijel case. But actually I'm looking forward to the 4 channel Shakmat quantizer. I wonder how it compares to the Intellijel Scales.
Wondering how you feel comparing the quantizer in the Ornament and Crime vs. something dedicated like the Arpitecht or Intellijel Scales? I'm down to my last couple open spaces in my setup and becoming conscious of having modules that do one thing vs. multi-function modules vs. a multi-function module that effectively gets pegged for a single function. Thoughts?
@@RedMeansRecordinghahaha. My man, English is the worst, no sweat. Just for educational purposes (professor here) of anyone reading, it's "mixo-lid-ee-an"
Can anyone suggest some other single decent multichannel/polyphonic synth modules besides the Spherical Wavetable Navigator? I find that when I'm patching my multiple outs from the O_C to several different oscillators I kind of get distracted by having to "change gears" between each of the different sound sources. I really like the appeal of just working with one unit with multiple ins.
Fun fact: if you mispronounce a word but use the word correctly it's likely because you've only read it and never heard it spoken out loud.
The Nickelodeon mode
There should totally be a mixelodeon scale. Who cares about words when inspiration hits.
One quarter of a Quantermain is a Quartermain

The O&C Quantermain/4ms SWN combo is magic. My newborn son and I love taking naps with this generative dream-team as the soundtrack!
Every day is more excellent when there's some RMR content to enjoy. This is a super cool module combo. I love it.
really love that 16khz bleeping throughout. very relaxing
Yeah sorry
That's a powerhouse set up in that row!
What a lovely music! I stick to quantizing pitches in midi for now, but I can totally see how addictive true modular can be.
I really like how you went from ambient to smooth (liquid?) D&B! Inspiring as always!

Literally just picked up a 6equencer and a second o_C to do exactly this! Super dope.
Something about these sounds is very nostalgic; it reminds me a bit of like... Gameboy Color sounds, but more melodic. Very lovely!
I really appreciate the fun cool amazing stuff you put out Jeremy!
Really interesting video, it really helps sometimes with music theory !

Really good patching ideas here. Thanks!
Now this is freaking awesome!
So the era of “quantenization” is over? I’ll miss it ❤️

Building the OC right now 😸
Ok but ... 4ms is awesome that SWN is so rad ;)
So, SWN can be used as basically 6 voice oscillators….. 5 note chords with a bass note…. Hmmm….
“This is a note” im lost help
You'll be ok

Ornament and crime quantizer has 4 channels!
Drink some water? That's crazy talk ;-)
I always thought the SWN was quantized on output

Is that some sort of Tetrapad expander?
Yup! Tete! It's legitimately awesome.
Seeing your videos after a long time, still as good as I remember!
Do you still use the OP-1?
Haven't for a year
Quiz on Friday?
Nice 1 fella. The DnB was added later and not also generated by modular gear?
you ever finish this track? it baaaangs
There's a link to a 30 minute finished jam in the description!
Can't figure out if saying "Mixolodian" for funnies or for serious.
Cool demonstration nonetheless
I literally do not know how to pronounce anything

drum sound for Rainmaker?
nickolodeon mixolonian mixolydian - who cares

Hey jeremy, have you considered a ACL Sinfonion? Thanks.
I actually just did a big interview with the creator of that! Will be out in September
What case do you use? Ist it 104 HP?
This is the 104 hp make noise skiff
Somewhere in Germany …
“My family and I are looking for Sex[quincer] …”
Are you left handed? If not do you find it difficult to play the Tetrapad with your off hand?
No. I'm modular ambidextrous
ACL Sinfonion
Sure. Sort of.
He keeps saying Mixolydian like Nicklodeon.
Yeah :(
Isn't it "quaNtermain ?" :)
Who knows. Probably
