I love your channel so much! Been going down the synth rabbit hole for about a year and you saved me so much time and money with your solid advice and thorough content. Much mahalo!
Good point! Been watching since the early OP1 days, so much so that I've forgotten what his previous channel name was before Red Means Recording. I think it was his name?
Fantastic video. I’ve had the SWN for a while but didn’t quite get it until now. I really appreciate you showing us what this miracle can really do. Thank you :)
Great video as always and a big help in understanding the module. So much in a small space. So interesting how it breaks down the voices to such interesting forms. It’s wonderful to have modules like this that break conventions.
The SWM is up there on my want list, I just started building my second 204hp rack recently since the addiction is real. I'm currently building a stack of Non Linear Circuits modules to throw in it.
Such a great machine, I love that you also get 6 ‘free’ lfos for modulating other synths or itself . It’s very undervalued on reverb/eBay imho but who am I to complain when I managed to buy one for nearly half rrp. There is a fair bit of learning to get it down but it’s worth the effort.
While this module can do a lot (wavetable, lfo, quantizer, envelope). After taking it for a test run I felt that it did a lot of things pretty well but not one particular feature stood out for me, I was pretty relieved that I didn't have to commit to buying/keeping it. Recently I got the ensemble oscillator.... and well me old chappie...that's something that is next level.
Next firmware update is supposed to add longer gate detection with in CV/GATE mode so you can define length of envelopes by gate length and essentially make all 6 oscillators playable polyphonically with different note lengths.
I hover on the edge of modular synth obsession and watching these videos does not help!!! My only solace which prevents the descent into poverty bought on by such an addiction is the ancient Micro Modular I am lucky enough to have. How I wish you could acquire more modules like this for it.
It is, it just takes practice sometimes. I cane across a modular system in a trade, and i mostly learned by Doing. When watching videos, it’s easy to get discouraged with the amount of vocabulary/connections being used, but modular can be for everyone!
Dude it’s pretty easy, I was actually turned off from modular for years (I have little synthesizer experience still) but I decided to take the plunge and the fact that every patch is different and that you mostly experiment when patching it becomes a natural flow. Just randomly trying things and then remembering things you’ve done in the past and seen online to put in your tool box
Edgar M.P. True, honestly the only barrier really is the technical language, whenever I explain stuff about modular to my friends I always say the word along with a normal synonym in parentheses, like sound generator vs oscillator
@@zaneaustin22 Bless you all for being encouraging and helpful. Don't assume it's the language tho. I'm an EE from the control electronics world so the concepts are all familiar. then add in that i'm a synth nerd so i even understand the context. i got rid of my first synth, a used vintage arp odyssey, because i got sick of patching it, and it only had sliders and switches. since then i only have purchased synths that can store patches, or ROMplers, which are just preset libraries. I'm thinking of building my own euro rack with a Behringer Neutron and a Behringer PRO-800 as must haves after discovering the amazing world of synths. What modules should I check out in addition?
pamelas new workout is an amazing clocked modulation and sequencing source. make noise maths for both envelopes and awesome lfos and also crazy math modulation. rene for generative sequencing. mimeophone for amazing time traveling delay and reverb.
Does somebody know how much recording time there is for recording your own wavetable? I wonder if you could throw some samples in there to use them as wavetables, like on the wavetable synth in Ableton.
Any idea how we can play Chords from an External MidiKeys with all 6Voice..? As i nolonger can frind the Polyend MiditoCV Module that patch all six of SWN's Voice.. Thanks for the great demo! HappyNewYear! Dre
My favorite part about is how tactile the LFOs are. I hooked then up to Morphagene yesterday and got some really satisfying, surprising results. Do you know of any other LFO modules that have this many outputs that are just as tactile?
Maybe the OCHD, which are 8 sine wave lfo which are phased differently between each other. You can get some very nice organic patches with it. And it’s 4hp
I tried the new feature of recording one waveform at the time, but I didn't understand how many I had already recorded (you can browser via colour but it doesn't really clearly show that you have X recording slots left). Have you tried that yet? PS: since you are asking for workflows: Mine are very different. On the one hand I like to use it as you did, just by selfpatching and running it through a Moonphase stereo filter, and letting it createt its own LFO-VCA rhythm, OR I have it STUFFED with cables coming from my Hermod and I try to record actual melodies that are longer than 6 steps into the Hermod with 6 voices.
@@RedMeansRecording You mean each single LFO? In ... that RED mode (so many names). But without changing pitch? Interesting. Tell me more if you tried recording a whole sphere just by recording individual waveforms, I wasn't able to really see my progress on the module. Maybe I missed some blinking light.
Hiya, sorry to be slight off topic (ps, loved this tutorial, very keen on getting one of these sometime), I notice you have Knit in your case. I've playing with the idea of getting one (or the 8hp beehive, though this will limit other areas) and this size will allow me to fit my dream stuff in my case. Love wavetable synths. My main two are Intellijel Shapeshifter and Waldorf NW-1 but I'd love this one, too. Six voices is appealing.
I'd love it if 4MS made a stand alone model with bigger knobs and more spacing between the CV in/outs.
