  • In this dog behavior training video, we go over how to help an anxious, nervous, or fearful dog to stop submissive rolling and gain confidence. Dogs communicate primarily through body language, so we can learn a lot about how a dog is feeling in a certain situation by learning to read their physical behavior.
What is "structure" when talking about dog training?
It's the rules and boundaries that you set up in your dog's life that let you and them know exactly what's expected in any given situation. It can be as loose or strict as you want, but keep in mind that behavioral issues have a hard time setting in if the dog's daily routine is predictable, which is what structure provides.
For example: Having them wait at the doorway with you before going outside, or having them go to Place when guests come over. Only letting them play rough in certain areas of the house, or having them sit before you feed them.
All of these are examples of household structure. And, again, structure provides predictability, which teaches the dog what to do in any given situation. This prevents them from having to figure it out themselves, which can easily lead into bad habits. So, for puppies, and dogs with behavioral issues, we want to ensure that their life is as structured as possible.
Later on, after those things become habits, then we can ease off on the strictness of it and start bending rules and boundaries, because they will no longer need to be told how to behave, and we can trust that they'll make good decisions. But, even at that point, if you notice the dog developing undesirable behaviors, going back to that structure while you train them will be very beneficial.
Caprica once had a very bad experience at another board-and-train program, and it left her in this very anxious and submissive mindset for a very long time. In this video, we show how we're using the simple idea of informed consent (her letting us know when she wants to be touched) to allow her to trust us, and to be a more comfortable and confident dog. Then we use that trust to expose her to things that would normally make her uncomfortable, because now she knows that she can always turn to US to help her navigate them. She doesn't feel the need to handle it by herself, so she can actually calm down.

Thanks for watching! Do you have a nervous or fearful dog? Do you practice informed consent?
Keep in mind that this is not something that's necessary for all dogs. Caprica is a very special case. But pay attention to their body language, and listen to what they're trying to tell you. ❤️💕

Yes, Chirag Patel's bucket game - all 3 parts and pedicure please by Susan Garrett. Also got my fearful Dobe (100lbs and not fat) used to a hound of the Baskervilles muzzle to help build his confidence. I had to get incredibly good at reading his body language as it was so subtle even for me. Susan Garrett's TEMP video and Kikopup's calming signals video helped a lot. Any kind of Nose Work helps build their confidence too. Several courses and if interested in competing, Baebae's training - she's actually a judge. Sara Ondrako has an awesome video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. My one Dobe will leave his lunch in his bowl. He has to have it in his snuffle mat. Hope that helps.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Great tips! I'm actually really curious about that one you mentioned about turning a pocket into a snuffle mat. I'll have to look that up. Thanks! ❤️💕

@@SomeMinorDogTraining yes, great craft even the kids can help with. Great fundraiser for shelters too. The only thing if you have a dog that likes to eat fabric, you'll want to supervise and pick up the mat once everything is gone. My guys don't bother it after the treats are gone. I also tie a double knot which prevents them from falling apart in the wash. Hound Hugger also has Free diy snuffle balls too. Hope that helps.
