Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

6:10 that went from an invitation to play by Auggie (play bow with wagging tail) to uncool reaction by the bulldog SO FAST. Auggie picked up on it, I didn't. I only saw the reaction and realized after the fact that there was something going on. Amazing how quick these dogs recognize small cues.

A fight can start between dogs because of a little sideways look, a little sneaky lip curl, wagging the tail in the wrong direction, stiffening one leg ... their communication can be very subtle, more than ours.

Having had bulldogs for 14 years now, they do get rough with play and that has to be corrected behavior. Also they tend to grapple for lack of a better term than most other dogs I've seen. Just found your channel and really like what you show. Consistent, ongoing correction and praise for good behavior.

They play so rough together which I guess is okay from what Joel is saying on these videos but they then struggle taming down the behavior on their own with other dogs and breeds. This is so true! I was walking my GSD 1-year-old in an off-road area, meaning off leash, and we suddenly came across an owner and his dog, also off leash. Because my boy is rather timid, and therefore sometimes aggressive, I immediately put the lead on and allowed them to meet. I also took a lot of cues from the owner. He was chill, had great control of his dog, and the meeting commenced without incident. The understanding/confidence of the owner is key.

I love how you point out the differences between correct and incorrect dog behavior, and explain what they mean.
We had our current dogs effectively dumped on us (family member needed to get rid of them, and we took them as a favor). Neither I nor my husband had much dog experience. In retrospect, we shouldn't have taken the dogs, but I didn't know better. We just let them exist in our large backyard for several years, using them to scare away wildlife and alert us of trespassers. Over the past couple months I've been trying to figure out how to "train" them, and I quickly figured out that there were some basic things I didn't know: 1) How to interpret dog body language. 2) What behaviors I *want* out of the dogs. 3) How I need to act around the dogs. Your videos are answering those questions and more. Thank you!

  • @BurningPXG

A tip to the camera guy: We can hear what he says when you focus the camera on the dogs, but we can't see the dogs behaviour when you focus on him. Try to keep focus on dogs so we can link what he says to the dogs behaviour.

To be fair the German Shepherd is 100% focused on the Bulldog, while the Bulldog is focused on many things, including, but not only, the German Shepherd. The 3rd dog is minding his own business. We don't see the bulldog doing anything to him, even though he is sharing the same space with the Bulldog and the German Shepherd.
In multiple shots, the bulldog is minding his own business while getting his ass sniffed by the German Shepherd. (5:41, 5:56, 7:34, 10:49)
6:09 - Here the German Shepherd barks at the Bulldog and runs away, the Bulldog only goes after him after he flees. The Bulldog is being reactive, not proactive.
Also, isn't it ok for the bulldog to not want to play with the German Shepherd? Maybe being aggressive is a way of setting a boundary of "I'm not in the mood to play, get out of my personal zone"
Also², isn't it healthy for dogs to set a hierarchy among themselves? I mean, If he humps on me, the human, I'd punish the behaviour (I'm the boss in the pack), but to me it's ok to let them do it among themselves. It's not like an Alpha dog would select favorites in his pack and protect them from dominance of other dogs in the pack.
I'm just curious, that's all. Not being a jerk and trying to find random things to critique. Just want to learn more about dog training.
    Thanks for the content!

A few people commenting on what they perceive to be a negative focus I.e. marking the dog’s unwelcome behaviour as opposed to hyping up the good. I had my friendly but polite Springer Collie cross at the park the other day, and she was nipped on the nose with zero warning by a French Bulldog - I’d much rather that this misbehaviour had been marked in this way, in the moment, rather than the owner’s passive acceptance and sheepish acknowledgement of their dog being a ‘grumpy little shit’, (or the fairly abstract idea of rewarding positives).

But my "meatball" could not interact normally with anyone outside our habitat. We can't go to the dog park. We can't go to a pet store. She only exists here. Thank you so much for the very informative video! I understand everything you say very well. My question: How can I train this in reality? I do not have other dogs that I can just add to my 1,5 years old neutered male. He loves playing BUT when he is off leash (and if I allow it) he will run up to other dogs at full speed and make them uncomfortable. How do I behave in a situation like this e. g. on the beach? He is too far away too quickly and also o focused on the run up to the other dog that I think I cannot get to him.
Side info: Recall and everything else, also off leash walking in busy streets, works perfectly fine 99% of the time.
    Thank you!

He has a video on progressing to off-leash walking which could be helpful! He recommends a ‘fakeout’ leash removal, which you could use. Your dog will think he’s off leash and might go to charge up to another dog but you’ll still be in control and be able to give a correction. Obviously I’m no trainer but just a thought that came to my head 😊

i have a Labrador husky mix rescue. He's around 2 years old, intact. Everytime he meets a male dog he puts his head over the other's back and, of course, that leads to a fight or an uncomfortable situation between the dogs. I know why he is doing it, however, I am not too sure how to stop it.

That's nothing. He is not so dominant to the point of pinning dogs down or attacking dogs of the same sex. I had a male Weimaraner which was like that. There is another way of managing those type of dogs.

Find local people with friendly dogs. Socialize him. Dogs are capable of communicating without some chicken head dude screaming at them any time they try to establish a connection. If your dog has rude manners, other dogs who are friendly and well socialized can give him a healthy correction. You don't need to intervene AT ALL unless it's unhealthy communication where someone's being hurt.

The way I saw this interaction was that Auggie was being too pushy with a dog who didn't want to play. Auggie didn't seem like he would take no for an answer. Do you think the bulldog was wrong for trying to get him to leave him alone? Did you see it a different way?

AH yes, Using "HEY" as a correction word... now every time the owners meet a friend the dog will think hes doing something wrong because hes going to recognize the word.

My boxer / cane corso is fairly decent when it comes to meeting new dogs. But in some cases , mainly most when we r walking . He will sniff other dogs but out of no where it turns into aggression. And even when we went to the beach the one time he was so hyper and barking and growling at a puppy ?! A puppy ?! And it didn't seem like a playful bark either. And I don't know how to correct this.
