Yeah, Clapton's use of it at the Cream Farewell concert was a huge reason why I wanted one. I love Les Pauls, but when I was finally going to pull the trigger on one I got a 335 with block inlays in antique walnut. No regrets, and it does all the things I would do with LPs but it's better for jazz and for small gigs I can get really awesome feedback sustain from it. I use enough gain that it can feedback when I want, but it's controllable. I often joke the guitar tells me when I have too much gain😂
I was at the Boston show and flipped when he busted out the 335. Then I noticed another guitar he was playing and I said, why does that strat have a weird headstock? That was also the first time we saw the silver sky which was just a prototype at the time
Such an incredible video. Thank you man!!! Ever since the Crossroads “ain’t no sunshine” performance I’ve been haunted by this guitar. Any chance of a “hollow body” expose for John? 335, Collings, L5, etc?
I saw John in April 2017 and he played the 335 for the entirety of the JM3 section. I remember being disappointed he didn't play one of his famous strats 😂
Something that is more fact than rumour, but still not fact. The bodies of the Crossoards 335 where (allegedly) made in japan by the Terada factory, where Orvilles and epiphone elitist where made. This is because gibson didn't have the molds for a 1964 es-335 body shape, but Terada did have the shape, look for late 80s japanese rivieras, early 90s orvilles, 2000s elitist 335s and all the Terada-made 335s under other brand names (VG, El Maya, etc), the bodies look more like the clapton's 335 and Crossroads 335 than any 64' reissue that gibson has ever launched, tom murphy included. This was kind of acknowledged by an ex gibson exec on the les paul forum, but i can't remember his name (kind of "i can't confirm or deny" type of comment). On the other hand, gibson released a video of the factory building the clapton 335, but they never showed workers making the body of the clapton 335, the bodies shown on that video were for other production 335 models.
Correct, the horns on the EC 335 models are not quite right. I think the horns are somewhere in the middle between the 'Mickey Mouse' '59 style, and the sharpness of the '64. The new '64 ES-335 VOS is right on. Someone on the phone at Gibson said that was made using Cesar's personal '64 ES-335 as a model.
@@ThePandaProcrastinates For sure. I have one of the Lennon Casinos with the Terada body... great guitar. As are all the Japanese made Gretsches. In the case of the EC 335, I don't think anyone would care, except the horns aren't right.
@@s2seltaeb still, the horns on the teradas/gibson crossroads are closer than any other attempt by gibson until now. And those casino teradas look absolutely insane, i think they are the prettiest casinos ever.
I got to see Clapton’s original one on display at GC Hollywood a couple years ago and I’m not sure if it’s the lighting they have on it , but the color seems to have faded out significantly. Hope it’s an optical illusion.
Stat correction: Mayer played the 335 when he sat in with the Emmy awards band (music director Steve Jordan) in 2018. THATS the last time he was seen with it.
Clapton is my absolute hero and his 335 is my favorite guitar ever and a few years ago I got to play one at Gruhn's in Nashville and it was $14,000 at the time and I would take mine over it any day and mine is a 2003 Dot Neck made in the Memphis factory in the early days when they moved down to TN to start making guitars. It's a really awesome one with an insanely hot neck pickup.
It seems like people who come over from Fender to Gibson call them a "three-three-five". People who are obsessed with Gibsons from the beginning and start with Epiphones or another brand call them a "three-thirty-five".

Ain’t no sunshine at crossroads…. That 335 tone sold me on the semi hollow thing. Beats a Les Paul any day

Even “Mr Les Paul fan boy” Joe Bonamassa has said that ES 335 are Les Paul killers.
I have an Epi Rivera and can’t wait to own a 335. Amazing tones and great video as always!
Iconic! Great video, Justin! What an era❤
Thanks for making this video. I love this guitar and I wish he still played it more often. Him and Clapton made me want a 335.

I was at the JM3 show in Nashville on Sept 26 2005 and he used the 335 on at least two songs.

What proportion of "all time" has John Mayer been playing guitar for?

That was actually September 18th of 2016, I assume you thought it was the 16th of 2018.
Does anyone know what song he was trying to play at 14:00?

absurd degree of detail yet they got the stoptail position wrong in relation to abr1 and knobs! ridiculous
I’m beginning to think Gibson deliberately gets something wrong on all of their 335 reissues. Usually the horns and the f-hole placement.
The guitar looks tiny on John😂
