  • We visited Chanthaburi on our way from Koh Chang to Bangkok. We made a stop to check out the Biggest Cathedrall in Thailand and the Gems Market.
Chanthaburi has a nice mix of cultures. The town has French, Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai influences.

The rubies and gems of Chantaburi are only history. Their gem deposits were depleted long ago. Today they sell imported gems branded as Chantaburi's at quite high pricing, Ruby of Siam had become legend already.
I once stayed with my friend in Bo Ploy (literally meaning gem depot) district in Trat province a full year and was told Bo Ploy was once a gem supplier for Chantaburi before theirs were depleted too.

Christian comunity in Chantaburi are Vietnamese origin it well known for that. People in Trad and Chantaburi speaks Thai in South Vietnamese dialect but most of them can no longer speak Vietnam. Back then being Christian arent popular in Vietnam so some of them move to Thailand where people can believe whatever they want as long they not against the royal. Actually the Christian Vietnamese not the firat wave Vietnamese migrat to Thailand, the first wave was the buddhist vietnamese they totally blended in just like Thai-Chinese. One of Thai PM is also a Vietnamese origin.
If you look deep into history Thailand of course is the land of Tai majority but what its like to be Thai there are combination of Mon Laos Cambodian Burmese Malays they integrated into Thai society since the country was founded so does Chinese most of them dont even know that their amcester probably werent Tai from the begining.

excetlly right, Siam since Ayodaya kingdom is united 3 state of MON Lovo, KHOM (Ancient Indian(Kaling) from the southren) U-thong and Tai suko"Tai", The power of 3 dynasty have playd this roll since over 800 year, when whatever ethic going on the throne, people in SEA is mixture from everywhere then they consider as they are Siamese they are Siamese, this proved by this province, The King TaakSin is a mixuture of Chinese Teochew try to recovered the country by didn't thought he is mixture or he came from emigrant family. with the throne and dynasty is another dimension, It is about the politic aspect, after the Thonburi Era Changed into Rattanakosin, Siam aka Thailand was rule by a main "Tai" dynasty (acctually mixed wih Mon,Khom maybe other who knows?) then Tai became to the main ethic ans culture since King Naresuan on the throne, That's why Oversea Chinese immagrent are start in Siam before other country and most of them are Teocheow Chinese not too many of Cantonese, Hinanese like as other country
*my opinion, maybe The King Naresuan
want to be separated from Burma decisively (Hong-Sa " in that's peroid)
Hongsa have Mon influenct same like Ayodaya have Suwannapoom Dynasty is the MON is main ethic, Mon are the big family and Burmese in that's time The king Bayingnuang is half Mon and Tangoo then King Naresuan is half Mon and Tai, maybe because of this reason Burmese didn't destroy Ayodaya like the 2nd war, since the 2 kingdom truly separated from the bloodline, in that's time Tongoo dynasty of Burmese can be destroy Ayodaya easier but they don't do it, and no reason why to keept the big enemy beside of them.
yeah, the time was changed, people mixed together like a melth-pot, what ever they came from , Chinese Malay japanses Protugres Patan(pakeestan)Tai Mon khom Indian or what ever new commer since communist war like as hmong, other tribe hill people, keren akah or GI children or westrener whom decide to be Thais, they are Thai, same as every person.
If I was track back to may family I have Tai,Chinese,Protuguese, Japanses blood inside, Do I am Thai? yeah 100% Thai from Thailand
