Thanks for watching my video. I'm gathering all the songs I shot at this concert in a TH-cam playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLwdc0qZNx0tYNXH8tZ4RfCTJGTmTMncBv.html. The songs (so far) are Do You Want To Build A Snowman (from Frozen), Let It Go (from Frozen), Twisted (Joni Mitchell song), Why (Annie Lennox cover), Happy Birthday (sung to her mom in the audience), No One Mourns The Wicked (from Wicked), No Day But Today (from Rent), and Defying Gravity (from Wicked). Enjoy!
I can imagine this in wicked part 2. she's looking at a propaganda poster of her and she sings a soft version of this song. tears are slowly falling down her face. omg this made me cry.
Can you imagine if they incorporated this to the musical? Elphie singing this to herself while she's alone. We never get a glimpse of what it was like alone in the West before Fiyero came. This could be before "As Long as You're Mine"
I picture Elphaba watching the celebration from a distance. Her heart breaks at Glinda trying to stay composed as she knows that the girl desperately wants to clear her name. She then blows a kiss to Glinda and starts going to the broom with Fiyero. Before she takes off, she takes one more look at Glinda and softly says “Bye Pinkie 😢”.
I never imagined Idina would sing No One Mourns The Wicked. Because her vocals here are raw. And you can tell she was getting emotional and sweaty! Brava to Our Queen
I feel like this is from an alternate universe in which Mimi, her character from Rent, made it big then watched Wicked and this is her very own rendition of the song.
The only other artist whom I’ve seen perform this raw was Liza Minnelli. For her last encore, the band had left so she walked on stage alone. She took of her lashes (Liza without the lashes?!), scrubbed the lipstick and makeup off of her face, her hair matted and soaked with sweat after delivering a ninety minute concert (that was 2011) and sung “I’ll be Seeing You”. Nothing but her voice filling the auditorium. Not a dry eye in the house!!
Are these pre Broadway lyrics right? "They make their bed not of rose but of thorns on their head, it's so hard when they're dead, no one mourns..." can't tell for sure
it is! the description says as much. i was wondering the same thing and now i’m wondering at what point in the show it was placed. reminds me of the angst in no good deed so i have to assume that was the song that ended up replacing it, or it was placed somewhere around that song. i love the classic rendition but this is so cool.
@@hamilcrossthe work shop version is on TH-cam, its at the beginning, the scarecrow has a solo part in it, i think it comes from his solo and just the companys part
There was definitely a lot of emotion in how she performed this song. Pulling out her hair and eyelash extensions. Tossing aside her dress. And that painful stare into the distance at the end. She's an actress so I assumed this was all part of her being in character, but the thing about some performers is that they draw on actual painful experiences to fuel their performances.
You bet she was genuinely crying. She brought back Elphaba to sing her celebration of death song! I mean, I really felt it was Elphaba there, inside Idina. And she was feeling everything Elphaba was feeling, the hurt, the betrayal, etc. What an artist 🥹💚
idk if im dumb or she's just a really good actress bc idk if this is just a concept of her show or she really got upset with all the makeup, hair and dressing
Definitely a pre-planned and symbolic choice. This is what her designer said about it: "[Idina] wanted to be present with her audience the entire time while shedding layers of her costumes and hair and makeup throughout her show...The beautiful symbolism of shedding all the theater’s layers of smoke and mirrors and just baring her soul and WHO she truly is by show’s end to her fans." This was the final song of the main set, so she brought this whole shedding process to a climax here.
Very nice performance, but the song was originally performed in 2003 by Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda, the good witch. It was the opening song of the Wicked play and was sung by Galinda and the cast to celebrate the death of Elphaba, the wicked witch, played by Idina.
@idinamenzel is it okay to like the new Wicked? I'm so partial to you and Kristin, I haven't even listened to the new versions yet. Are we allowed to or is that like cheating? I'll wait for confirmation 😂
Idk, I feel this comes off as Elphaba singing this as she watches the “celebration” from a distance. Idina’s vocals give the song Evanescence-like rock edge to it.
@@TheMarlonChannel except the song was written with that operatic element in mind. It's like showing up to perform a Slayer song with an electric violin

Elphaba singing No One Mourns the Wicked by herself is the loneliest thing I can imagine
ahh this comment 😭😭
And then Elphie throws off the makeup and gets anorexic arms to sing let it go😂
I can imagine this in wicked part 2. she's looking at a propaganda poster of her and she sings a soft version of this song. tears are slowly falling down her face. omg this made me cry.
oh god I wish Idina would release this version as a single like she did with Defying Gravity (one of my favorite versions of that song)
You. Out not have much life experience then.
Can you imagine if they incorporated this to the musical? Elphie singing this to herself while she's alone. We never get a glimpse of what it was like alone in the West before Fiyero came. This could be before "As Long as You're Mine"
That wont make sense timeline-wise?
There are apparently 2 new songs coming in the Wicked Part 2 film, one being rumored for Elphaba (which might serve this purpose?)
Before as long as you’re mine they run straight from the previous scene in the palace. After it she goes straight to muchkinland.
I didn't know I needed Idina headbanging while performing No One Mourns the Wicked. :O
Ikr🙌💚🧹
Neither did I. Especially she hasn’t lost her war cry too much
Her taking out her hair and eyelash extensions is a total vibe.

Ever the actress finding new ways to share the same song. It’s like she tell a new story with every version
I see what you mean with how she does Let It Go in this concert tour
idk how to better explain it but i love the colour of her voice... i could listen to it for hours and not get tired
I'm in love with her voice 😭
Lol, I know exactly what you mean and I would recommend you check out a little thing called Synaesthesia. I've got it so this makes sense
That was so emotional 😭
I LOVE HER. NO ONE COULD EVER DO IT BETTER THAN HER! TRUE ELPHABA!

She played Maureen haha
Idina played Maureen opposite Rosario Dawson as Mimi
Maureen. Not Mimi.
Maureen, but yes, I was thinking this as well
That’s an interesting way to put it. I became a fan of hers thanks to Wicked but it took me a long time to sit down and watch the Rent movie
Witness her performance in July in Majestic theatre….this performance….no one gets an artist at their raw. We did. What an experience!
hope all 4 of them are sisters for life. well done...
Thank you! :S
Sound so beautiful and emotional in her voice!

OMFG. That's EXACTLY what this is!
This recording has inspired me to make my own jazz/Jazz-rock arrangement of this tune. Such a cool vibe!
Sure, Jan.
@@arc7375 what's your damage
Well now I want this in Part 2!
She’s only gotten better over the years.
I hope she does a recording of this
Giving very Maureen vibes. Thought she might sing over the moon at some points
I hear no Tango.
@@arc7375there’s no tango in over the moon
The song Tango: Maureen was a duet between Mark & Joanne
But I can see where you’re coming from
I love this woman so much. 😍
And the way she looks fucking GORGEOUS in that last shot.
You’re a true icon Idina Menzel. 💖
I wanted to be there for this concert tour so badly. I’ve been a fan of hers a little while before Frozen. The Wicked cast recording made me a fan
Ok Maureen performance art fire

The Maureen Johnson jumped OUT of this performance chile !
Incredible. Just incredible.
amazing! such a goth rock vibe to it.
Her voice🙌🏆
Thanks for posting this she’s so amazing
she's so extra, I love it
Wow!
This is gorgeous
Ooooh yessss. this felt like a drag performance (in the best way) when she started undoing her hair
Where was I and what the hell was I doing that I wasn't at the Fox Theatre on July 21st?
Sorry you missed this show! FWIW, I use a site called Seated to alert me when my favorites go on sale. That's how I knew she was coming. Cheers.
this is so Maureen-coded I don’t know how to explain
omg yessss😍 idina
she is SO cool. very punk rock.
For the Queen of Broadway, she’s grown versatile almost as Lin Manual Miranda
Marvelous
3:58 This seemed so manic!
Almost a Alanis Morasette vibe
Very much so!
Love this ❤
Did NOT expect that Hedwig twist ending 😂💀
Wait did I miss something? What was the Hedwig part?
@ haha wiping off her makeup and ripping out her hair 😂
I’m getting Maureen vibes from this
The Substance: The Musical
OMG!!! 😂😂😂😂
What?
This NEEDS to become the credit song for Part Two. Please JON. You can FIX it.
Idina singing in the end credits would be so wonderful. My life would be complete
Maureeeeeeen
Adele Dazeem is so talented
Does anyone have the lyrics to this version?
Correction, it’s better as she gets into it imo
I wonder where that new section came from near the end? Could it have been cut material from Wicked's workshop years pre-Broadway?

Does anyone have the lyrics? I can’t understand what she’s saying other than “they made their beds”
Did she change any of the lyrics, and if so, can someone tell me what she sang differently? I’m deaf 🧏 thanks
The climax is like a rock refrain but I can’t make out what she’s saying… “not a girl, not a crown, not a ….” Something like that?
CORRECTION: Kristin Chenoweth performed the original as Galinda in the musical Wicked. 🙂
Good correction. You're obviously right. I just fixed the video description. Thanks!
Makeup wipes very reminiscent of mary wiping off her makeup in "i dont know how to love him"
this was so random😭
I felt the same!

was she genuinely crying in this? or was it like part of the performance?

Probably both because of method acting. Tho there are actors that can cry on cue without thinking about anything
Are there lyrics available for this anywhere?
This is a song from Wicked she's covering!

@meghancardwell3915 actually it was just a sideways compliment for Idina, but I hope you have a great day!
this is such an odd comment.
you gotta learn to form your own opinions, buddy
Girl what. It’s a movie. She was on the stage musical.
She does not have the voice to do the operatic portions of this song 😒
She's not trained to do that, that's why she didn't - and that's ok. She's a belter.
