    I believe the black on the blade is not a coating per se but heat treat scale that they decided not to bother grinding off to save cost. Great video as always! Thanks mate.

    Your video is just like the Skrama: fun but also really useful! We have similar problems with hard wood in Finland btw - when it's all frozen in winter :) Mine doesn't see a lot of use because a (much) smaller fixed blade is usually enough for me, but I'd take it on longer trips in the wilderness or when I really wanted a chopper. We've used it in the army for brush clearing, which, I think, is one of the tasks the designer had in mind for this one.

    You know that we dont have hard woods in Scandinavia. We usally just chop birch,pine and mostly spruce. It is first and foremost made for the scandinavien forrest.As with most knives and axes,this is something to remember.Like the scandy edge,also made for softer woods in mind(a little fragile edge). But works great in it's right place.This is usual with the rest of the worlds blades and axes.

    Here in the Oregon we have a wood that's very close to what you're dealing with its purple plum tree wood and boy its the worst on knives. Its very grainy when green twisted and rick hard but once it drys it becomes like glass and the Schrade SCHF 52 DIED when I did my big dummy 5 minute TH-cam adventure test LOL. Im much smarter now 5 years later . It also turns to dust or shatters near the core but for making wood handles its beautiful wood lots of purples and yellow marble colors.
    If a knife can be used in Pete's neck of the woods I trust it above any other review😉

    I use mine for yard work, delimbing thick branches that I have sawed off trees and bushed that need pruning, and splitting some of those into kindling for our wood burning stove. I split large logs with a GB splitting axe but once the diameter becomes smaller, batoning the Skrama is easier and more accurate. I modified mine a bit: sanded down the bump in the middle of the handle a bit, and more importantly, I thinned the edge bevel and convexed it (actually a bit like a sabrevex, more than just the bevel). It is a lot better that way. I use it on stuff like hawthorn, hazel and ash. A lot of oak. Much of it seasoned logs. No problem at all, no chipping or rolling. I usually pass it over a strop after an afternoon of hard use, sometimes I'll give it a few strokes with a ceramic rod or just with a hardfoam 180 grit nail file. This is not a blade to baby, it is used alongside axes and a scythe. And it does great. I don't try to avoid knots, but aim to split right through them. Works like a charm. Indestructible.

    Basically an updated Scandinavian (Viking, lol) Seaxe. Lighter than an axe, and looks like maybe as good a chopper as a hatchet. I'm getting one, along with their 140mm pukko knife. Good to know about the sleeve on this one. I don't see much need for their very excellent sheath on the Skrama for my purposes either. Good review. I loved seeing the Bic lighter at your fire. Most reviewers seem to HAVE to show their fires being started with a rod. Lol, a few Bic lighters in the pack and you're good to go for a couple of months. A couple of my utility knives have lighters in the sharpening stone pouch on the sheaths. I'm good with carrying my ceramic sticks in my pack, along with spare lighters, lol. In sealed plastic bags.

    I bought the regular Skrama and sheath, and while I like the feel of the handle, I wanted a blank one to add a handle later, so I bought the plain blade to make my own handle later. The blank blade came with just the plastic sleeve, and I noticed the sheath literally is that plastic sleeve covered with leather which they did a great job with. I've used the regular one here in the Utah desert with quite a bit with no maintenance other than wiping off mud or water before I put it in the sheath and I have no rust. I'm going to make a handle out of micarta for the blade blank I have, I'll have that one in my camping bag and the regular one in my truck.

    I'm pretty sure the leather sheaths are actually leather wrapped and formed around those plastic sheaths. That's the impression I got on the site. I need to make a sheath for my Martindale Golok. So I justify buying a half hide to make a wrap for this as well. Plus I've got some jeans need patching. Now there's a good excuse to buy one. Score!

      You're correct. I bought the regular Skrama and sheath, and I was so impressed I bought the blank blade with no sheath, just the plastic cover. The leather sheath literally is that plastic sheath covered, very well I might add, with leather.

They send me funny commercials to my email since I subscribed :) Thats a fun knife Skrama has a rubbery handle but its not a Puukko leuku knife since the handle isnt wood but its like seax style but not seax and its not a puukko but almoast. Its a funny knife. The blade is from Lauris metalli its a good knife makes blades.

    @muskett4108 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm a huge fan of the Skrama. I like to think of it as "The thinking man's Golok". It can be forced to do most tasks big or small and most people can find a place for one in their cutting armoury. For the price a bit of a bargain. I love mine when my pocket or belt knife just isn't enough. Its one of my reach for tools nows and I get annoyed with myself if I don't have one handy.
    Some wood is just so hard and a bch on any tool.
    You only get some talk back vibration from the Skrama when hitting rock hard wood at max velocity. Its not ring ding like you get from a machete. I would prefer a blade to "talk" to me than just give up. After two years my first Skrama has worked its socks off and just keeps going.
    Goloks can do bamboo and reed grasses really well, and excellent on green pole and stakes. A golok should be a bit stiffer than a machete, and more packable being shorter. The military like them as they should be soldier proof.
    The Skrama is just a better golok. Better design, better steel, just great. Just wish I'd had one 30 years ago.
    Most cost effective sheath is the British Army SA80 Bayonet Fog which will take the plastic insert and very cheap off the bay. I use a DMT Diafold Red to keep my Skrama evil sharp. They are easy to keep tip top.
    Nice vid, keep them coming.

    How easy or difficult is the Skrama to sharpen? I understand that it has 2 different edge angles. One up front for chopping and another towards the handle for carving or feather sticking etc.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a rather old school knife, so the edge rippling is probably best dealt with by using a steel to straighten it before doing stone sharpening.
    That method should extend the life of the blade and actually make for less grinding.

      The Condor Hudson Bay is an excellent knife, I have an older one that was 3/16" thick all the way to the short saber grind. Lots of steel and chopping/batoning power. I got a later model as a backup that was more flat ground back to the spine. Much sharper, both very nice knives. The original one I used very very hard for quite a few years. They could use a longer and thicker handle for chopping grip but a great knife.

    Rolled edge and warping? Unacceptable performance. We have hard maple and hornbean where I'm from. Never is a problem for my Helle Laplander. Or my cheap but genuine old Japanese Tanto I got at auction. Theres too many big "bush" knives that put too much emphasis on toughness and malleability as opposed to hardness and sharpness. When I start seeing videos like this showing people actually chipping a blade I'll start to believe otherwise. But to me 95% of a blades purpose is to be sharp. I managed 4000 acres of land for 10 years and never had to use any kind of knife as a "pry bar". And it rusted too? Did it do anything right? I fail to see why it has any advantage over a $10 orange and black Fiskars tool bought at Sears.

      My thoughts are that the skrama would fall very short when it comes to carving, like most if not all big choppers do. That being the case it's poorly designed as straight up chopper. An offset, front heavy blade and angled handle seems to be the ideal for that. Think kukri or Japanese nata axes. I think people might have a limited frame of reference to sing this imones praises, maybe it's thier first big chopper?

      The grind is shallower closer to the handle to facilitate finer work, and that is also why it wasn't designed to be front heavy, so it would have better balance when you choke up on the handle for finer work. Instead they made a longer handle so you can shift your grip backwards when you want a more choppy balance to it. Quite some thought has gone into the design and overall this is the most versatile big blade I have ever handled.
