Hello David. I just ran across your channel a few days ago. I love outdoor life. Hunting, fishing, camping, astronomy, flying model airplanes. I'm 66 years old. I grew up with a gun in my hand and a backpack on my back. Unfortunately when I was 26 years old I got degenerative disc disease and I've lived with it now for 41 years. Twelve years ago I became disabled. It has only gotten worse. I'm not able to go camping or hunting anymore. I love watching people like you doing the things I can no longer do. For me it's like I'm doing it with you. People like you keep me in high spirits and gives me a reason to keep on keeping on. So I'll say to you, " Keep On Keeping On " ! I live in the hills of east tennessee. I've been in other states where the land is flat, but after a few weeks I can't wait to get home back to hills and mountains. I'm only 30 minutes away from Virginia and Kentucky. There's a mountain in Middlesboro Kentucky where you can actually stand on all 3 states, and what a view. Daniel Boone trail is near by. Cumberland Gap is in my back yard. Norris lake is all around me. I wish I was still able to enjoy it.

If you’re a believer in the big blade mid size combo, it’s really the obvious choice for a heavy duty woods blade. I go back and forth between thinking something like this is ideal, or thinking a mid sized bushcraft knife like the garberg should be combo’d with a bird and trout type knife. The reality is that I never chop, and the only thing that I really ever get out of blades over 4-5” long is processing wood bigger than I really have any business processing. It always makes me wonder if I wouldn’t just be better off with a knife that is much handier and then something to do really delicate work like skinning and fish cleaning
Great Video! I'm that guy with 20 or 30 fishing rods(lost count last year) I'm also afflicted with the love of anything with an edge. Military or Civilian.. 1800s to present..Its a blessing and a curse..Keep up the great work 🗡🪓
My friend Dave....you are a sewing genious. We, well as in myself and my better half don't have a sewing machine, and she knows I want to start sewing hammocks. As always, I'm in awe of your creativity and willingness to craft your own solutions. I'll tell you what I like a lot more than the Garberg though: any of the Terava puukkos. They are GREAT knives -- which also happen to be cheaper than the Garberg. To me they're like a Mora Bushcraft with "soul." You have to have one in your hand to appreciate just how nice they are. I have all the Teravas -- both Skramas (yours is a "200." They also make a "240," which, in addition to 40mm more of blade, has a handle that's nearly twice as long as the 200); and I have all three of the puukkos: 85, 110, and 140. Couldn't be happier with them -- I'd pay twice what they ask for them. Sheaths are awesome, too. You're a real inspiration, Dave. Thanks for your videos.

Hi Dave! I'm not a big fan of machetes, however, I do own two: (1) UST that came with a small fixed blade and (2) an Ontario SP8. Using a couple of your ideas and some industrial velcro I attached an old military boot knife and a pouch to each of the machete sheaths. In the pouch I put a Bic lighter and a small container of vaseline saturated cotton balls. Each of the boot knives were in OD green ballistic nylon sheaths. A year later now and both kits have held up without any loosening issues. I love watching your videos for ideas.

Learned a new trick-- burning the ends of the elastic. And I have been sewing for more years than I want to admit to. So, why hasn't anyone else ever mentioned this? Or, better yet, why didn't I think of it? I guess it took your genius to show it to the world!

Funny you've mentioned that Scott. I met with them face to face three or four times at the blade show Condor both and even showed them photos on my phone of some of my set ups. They pretty much wasn't interested in me or anything I have created. I've never talked to anyone at Tops so I don't know how receptive they would be. Not the best weather for hiking out here in the UK unless you like getting wet, still it was nice to see Mr. Knife joining Mr. Machete in a prosperous partnership ready for their future adventures together.

Very nice! I also like to combine the Skrama with the Garberg in stainless with the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140 as a backup blade in my bag. However I usually carry the Skrama in my bag, don´t like carrying heavy objekt around my belt, not for a long periods at least. Thanks for a great video!

Hi Dave, that's a nice way to attach the knife to the machete! Good job and great idea! With my Ontario SP-5 and the pocket on it's sheath, I found out the Silky Pocket Boy fit's perfectly in it. The great thing about loving knives, you get to see how your collection evolves over the years. I know that is the case for me lol. i still have my boy scout knife. If people ask me why so many knives my response is always why not. People collect all kinds of stuff,mine just happens to be knives. Great video brother
Great maker skills, for myself I think I would snap the knife loop over the top elastic because my knife sheathe would probably wiggle out of the elastic and fall out along the way, knowing me... you always inspire me!

@@tikkidaddy One note, if you buy a Village parang you can use it right out of the box. If you buy a Warlock you'll have to thin the grind down a little to make it a really good chopper. The Warlocks grind isn't thin enough for my liking

@@tikkidaddy the Village Parang is fully convex but I can't explain the Warlock which is partially flat angle, convex uneven sloppy ground. Now the Warlocks balance, shape length and weight are very nice but the grind I got on mine was terrible.

@@Reallybigmonkey1 I completly forgot to ask you my question. Would you recommand that skrama machette to make a single whole arround machette system of yours (wich i feel very clever by the way)? Maybe paired with a mini puuko of theirs? What would be your thoughts on that subject if you were doing a first combo for a first boyscout camp? Thank for the response of my first message. I meant every word of it. Sometimes i say a "AAAaaAA" I guess as a small barbarian yop or as my cliché native indian tells me.. I say that to my friends when I feel that spirit makes it shared without wording. When that feeling bild up in a group of people that's the one feeling I prefer in the world. Makes me feel belonging in the group and still myself at the same time. Makes me feel the Moment is shared before the individuality, yet it make the bound of intelligence and kindness respectfull of the moment and the inner part of each.. Each time you make a mistake on camera, I feel that moment.. No shame usfull for living the moment.. Living and learning is a all time life.. You see, you inspire me what's some poetry to me.. I have my SP-53 paired with my Bushcraft Black also. That SP-53 is a great machete with most of the functionality of a hand ax. I wouldn't know anything about either if it wasn't for you, Dave. Thanks.

Love my sp53 bought it about 7 years ago based on your recommendation and yes your lanyard advise was / is priceless. Made small pieces out of large branches about 7 times with the sp53. It is my favorite over anything else. :)

Hi Dave. I've been sewing for years, and the thing I dislike about elastic is, it stretches out over time and becomes too loose to secure things after lots of use. I went to the cordura webbing, which works great with the quick release buckles. Great vid my friend.

It’s nice to see your sewing again now that you have two sewing videos you might be able to create a category in your videos playlist LOL.Now here comes my loose lighthearted comedy I was Reminded of two things When watching this video that gave me an idea on what could possibly be used for a future leg sheath knife combo hook up rig. What if you used a woman’s garter belt? As a chassis! Or one of those things those guys used in the early 1900s to hold up their socks? LOL
That's awesome! You could also use one long piece and figure 8 sew it instead of trying to sew two seperate loops. Fold a long one 1/3,2/3 and pinch a one inch loop, and close it up that way.
I think you must be the only one who teaches a different side of bushcraft with your sewing and making equipment which is unique to you. It's an inspiring side too! Always as riviting as any of your outdoor videos. Not to mention seeing that wonderful collection of knives you have. I dread to think what would happen in Britain if the police new someone had a collection like that! Probably lock us away for 50 years. 😢. that's a nice looking seax there. perfect combo of two scandinavian type knives. i think if i ever decide to try this idea, i'll go for wider, heavier weight elastic strap, like what you usually see on pistol leg holsters.

Hi Dave! As always I enjoy your videos. While you were sewing the small loop to make a circle, I had an idea. I hope I can clearly explain what I see in my head. Instead of making the ends overlap, think of the Greek Omega letter, turn one end like an L and sew on the outside. Then loop over to make a backward L on the other side such that the ends meet in the middle but the sewing is outside the loop. I hope this makes sense!
This is very creative and I love that you explain in detail how and why you adapt your design. This is a great solution that allows you to piggy back any combination of blades, but did you know verustaleka now makes a double sheath for the skrama? It allows you to add their mini puukko or mini skrama to either the 240 or 200 skrama.

Cool set up. Definitely like the idea of the elastic over the wrapped cordage. Just wondering if you could do a small loop for a fero rod or if it would be to lose? You could possibly even make a small pouch for a fire kit to go under the knife. Be like a 3 stage carry in 1. Have a great weekend sir.

Have you ever considered modifying a pair of cargo pants to add a long pocket down the leg that would hold a machete? All the straps and things hanging are annoying when hiking and it seems like fitting the belt things into pockets would be a better solution.

You should strap a Terävä Jääkäripuukko to the Terävä Skrama, then you'd be all finnish'ed! I love your outdoors and gear videos and have been following you for a couple years. Your machinist background makes a huge difference. I had never thought of using rubberized abrasives to sharpen recurve blades before your sharpening tips on machetes. I got the SP53 Bolo from watching your machete video. There's a Mora Robust carbon paracorded to it. I've got a Jääkäripuukko 140, but haven't got a Skrama yet. I'll probably get a 240.
You didn't even groan at my horrible pun! Oh well. I like your non-fancy and often inexpensive solutions. I've also been camping alone some due to a recent shortage of camping buddies, so your suggestion of the heavy machete instead of a hatchet to reduce the risk of deflection injuries is especially useful. You often make or modify gear, and I do too, so it's always fun to get some new ideas.
I once used Velcro brand ALFA-LOK Metalic Velcro on a mirror to hang it from my wall and many months later when I was rearranging the room , I went to take it off to move it and bam where the Velcro was there were now holes and the back of the mirror had broken wall stuck on the Velcro. That stuff is no joke , it truly is industrial strength.
This was very helpful. That dual grind on the Skarma is an idea the winner of "Alone" season 3 (I think) uses. He puts a scandi grind on the blade of his machetes down near the handle and a convex grind on the rest of the blade for chopping.

Dave, I think you need to reach out to Tops Knives or Condor about your own machete/knife combo design. I think a lot of your fans would buy it.
Funny you've mentioned that Scott. I met with them face to face three or four times at the blade show Condor both and even showed them photos on my phone of some of my set ups. They pretty much wasn't interested in me or anything I have created. I've never talked to anyone at Tops so I don't know how receptive they would be. Very nice! I also like to combine the Skrama with the Garberg in stainless with the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140 as a backup blade in my bag. However I usually carry the Skrama in my bag, don´t like carrying heavy objekt around my belt, not for a long periods at least. Thanks for a great video!

@@tikkidaddy One note, if you buy a Village parang you can use it right out of the box. If you buy a Warlock you'll have to thin the grind down a little to make it a really good chopper. The Warlocks grind isn't thin enough for my liking

@@tikkidaddy the Village Parang is fully convex but I can't explain the Warlock which is partially flat angle, convex uneven sloppy ground. Now the Warlocks balance, shape length and weight are very nice but the grind I got on mine was terrible.

I have my SP-53 paired with my Bushcraft Black also. That SP-53 is a great machete with most of the functionality of a hand ax. I wouldn't know anything about either if it wasn't for you, Dave. Thanks.

Love my sp53 bought it about 7 years ago based on your recommendation and yes your lanyard advise was / is priceless. Made small pieces out of large branches about 7 times with the sp53. It is my favorite over anything else. :)

Hi Dave. I've been sewing for years, and the thing I dislike about elastic is, it stretches out over time and becomes too loose to secure things after lots of use. I went to the cordura webbing, which works great with the quick release buckles. Great vid my friend.

That's awesome! You could also use one long piece and figure 8 sew it instead of trying to sew two seperate loops. Fold a long one 1/3,2/3 and pinch a one inch loop, and close it up that way.

that's a nice looking seax there. perfect combo of two scandinavian type knives. i think if i ever decide to try this idea, i'll go for wider, heavier weight elastic strap, like what you usually see on pistol leg holsters.

Hi Dave! As always I enjoy your videos. While you were sewing the small loop to make a circle, I had an idea. I hope I can clearly explain what I see in my head. Instead of making the ends overlap, think of the Greek Omega letter, turn one end like an L and sew on the outside. Then loop over to make a backward L on the other side such that the ends meet in the middle but the sewing is outside the loop. I hope this makes sense!

This is very creative and I love that you explain in detail how and why you adapt your design. This is a great solution that allows you to piggy back any combination of blades, but did you know verustaleka now makes a double sheath for the skrama? It allows you to add their mini puukko or mini skrama to either the 240 or 200 skrama.

Cool set up. Definitely like the idea of the elastic over the wrapped cordage. Just wondering if you could do a small loop for a fero rod or if it would be to lose? You could possibly even make a small pouch for a fire kit to go under the knife. Be like a 3 stage carry in 1. Have a great weekend sir.

Have you ever considered modifying a pair of cargo pants to add a long pocket down the leg that would hold a machete? All the straps and things hanging are annoying when hiking and it seems like fitting the belt things into pockets would be a better solution.
No I have not John but that's gotta be the suggestion of the year! I love that idea and I'm definitely going to look into doing that

I love your outdoors and gear videos and have been following you for a couple years.
Your machinist background makes a huge difference. I had never thought of using rubberized abrasives to sharpen recurve blades before your sharpening tips on machetes.
I got the SP53 Bolo from watching your machete video. There's a Mora Robust carbon paracorded to it.
I've got a Jääkäripuukko 140, but haven't got a Skrama yet. I'll probably get a 240.
Oh if I had one I'd definitely strap it to the Skrama. I just haven't gotten one yet. I'm glad you like the videos my friend!

I like your non-fancy and often inexpensive solutions. I've also been camping alone some due to a recent shortage of camping buddies, so your suggestion of the heavy machete instead of a hatchet to reduce the risk of deflection injuries is especially useful.
You often make or modify gear, and I do too, so it's always fun to get some new ideas.
I once used Velcro brand ALFA-LOK Metalic Velcro on a mirror to hang it from my wall and many months later when I was rearranging the room , I went to take it off to move it and bam where the Velcro was there were now holes and the back of the mirror had broken wall stuck on the Velcro. That stuff is no joke , it truly is industrial strength.

That dual grind on the Skarma is an idea the winner of "Alone" season 3 (I think) uses. He puts a scandi grind on the blade of his machetes down near the handle and a convex grind on the rest of the blade for chopping.
I know him, David McIntyre. He first did that scandi grind model about ten years ago.
