- In this teaser from the upcoming series of Top Gear, Chris Harris gets behind the wheel of the Sián - Lamborghini's first foray into hybridity. But this isn't a petrol-sipping eco-mobile - "no $£*!, Sherlock" we hear you cry - no, it stars Lambo's famous V12 and doesn't even have a traditional hybrid battery. The hybrid system, instead, is powered by a super-capacitor - lighter and faster discharging than a lithium-ion battery - and is largely used to torque-fill through gear changes. Sound intriguing? Let's see what Chris makes of this new handful from the raging bull...

Capacitors have been around a long time, computers use them. It’s a clever idea to use a huge one for hybrid boost though. Saves weight over a true hybrid system too.
i think its more of a facade to get past regulations with that v12. the capacitor only adds 33bhp at most so i dont get all the hybrid fuss

I have a super cap in my car in case my battery dies. It would use the dead battery of my car to charge itself and then shoot that electricity back out so i can start my car

Agreed. Ferrari doesn’t even let first time buyers have a new car, you have to buy a CPO one first. And the 812 is just a modded F12, the F8 is just a modded 458, which chassis goes all the way back to the F430. Ferrari is a brand, it’s not magic

I have done my Major project about these super capacitors. They charge rapid and are very good for these instant boosts. With a longer charge cycle they are amazing. But only consider them amazing for short bursts. I used to tell my professor that this is amazing for track cars. Look who is laughing now. ;)

There is a reason why F1 cars use batteries instead of capacitors. The low energy density of the latter is not compensating for their higher power density. And batteries in F1 show they can do the job anyway. Lamborghini is using it just for marketing purposes.
@@USUG0 higher output value is what it is being used for. Density was never a concern to begin with the fact that the speed difference in an F1 and its KERS is way higher. This is a much better innovation to keep a light weight and utilise the energy on the go.

@@prithvimishra light weight? With an energy density 1/10 of batteries at best, it is not a reality. You can achieve the same result with a lighter battery. With current technology, the only rationale for a capacitor would be the minimal wear by repeated charge/discharge. An issue that would occur only if you were racing the car on a track daily. Something that will never occur in reality for a Sian.

Lamborghini's reason to go hybrid...to smooth out gearshifts...and it gets one less mpg on the highway than the non-hybrid car it's based on. Now that's the Lambo way

Big difference, Hammond crashed the Rimmac on a narrow track where as Chris is on an open airfield. Then there’s the fact that Chris has been racing for decades and Hammond has only had a dabble in a race setting. I’d love to see if you could do half the stuff Hammond has over the years.

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is the second fastest production car around the nurburgring. It was the fastest for 2 years until just recently.

By the way the single clutch in the aventador shifts at 50 milliseconds at wide open throttle. It's just slow around town, but that doesn't matter for lap times does it? The motor is not centered, and is not the first one. Check out the Aventador, Gallardo and Murcielago.
@@nashjanai It's to do with AWD and the prop shaft placement going to the front diff. The Huracan and R8 are the same.
Even with the Huracan and R8 RWD variants, the engine remains offset, as the costs for manufactures to have two variants for different engine placements is huuuuge
