Hi Bob. Sorry for the late reply. Things have been a bit crazy for me lately. The wheel and fusee look great. Thank you for taking the time to make the videos. They are entertaining and very informative.
Thanks Brian....good to know the recapping is good...just finishing off the next video where I plant the center and third wheel...I put some recap there as well...it is going to be kinda long though...just short of 30 minutes...but it does start looking like a clock...bob
G’day Bob, it’s starting to look very impressive indeed, couple of things though; what’s the difference between the broaches and why the 5 degree play is that a method of measuring an acceptable clearance? Cheers Peter
G'day Peter...a 5 sided broach has as expected 5 sides milled with a slight taper and then the 5 sides are hardened then ground into very sharp edges for cutting...and they do cut well into a brass plate...now a smoothing broach has the same taper turned into it as the 5 sided broach and is hardened then you lay it on 120 grit emery paper and hold it by the top and bottom and run it perpendicular to scratch it...that forms the smoothing edge...you do this frequently during usage. The 5 degree tilt assures you have opened the hole sufficiently and checking the shake once between the plates...assures there is a 1/32" clearance between the end of the pivot and the plates and the hole is loose enough so the weight of the arbor will allow the pivot to slide easily in the plate...very acceptable means of assuring proper clearance. Peter finishing off the next video...get a seat in your favorite chair with a cuppa for that one...looks like it will go over 20 minutes...bob
Hi Brian, Bob died of pancreatic cancer at the end of January, alas, before he could finish his clock. He so enjoyed making these videos and the people he met through them. I thank you for your concern. Bob's wife

Great video Bob. I think the recapping is a very good idea. It helps with the continuity. Keep up the good work.

@@robertt-cs8fe I'm so sorry. I really enjoyed his videos, he was a very talented man. My sympathies to you and your family for your loss.
Jewelers use broaches too.
Ya that kinda makes sense...bob

thanks a lot for that info...I've made several 5 sided broaches and find them very useful...guess now I need some diamonds to mount :)...tnx...bob
