She's phenomenal as Regina though so who cares😂
A friend of mine was in a play where they changed a line about her character's weight to be closer to her own! Not because they cared-she herself was worried that audiences wouldn't believe it. I think it would have been fine, though; she did a great job and that's honestly what people care about.
I always think that the ensemble jealousy thing comes from high school productions where there is more bitchy-ness and some of them don't take it seriously as a possible profession. Often ensemble members are understudies for principle roles. I know for myself if I ever got to be in a professional show, I'd be honoured to even be a member of the ensemble!!!!!
YES, I can confirm this as a person who is always type-casted into little roles! So many people were bitter about it permanently, I was a little hurt when I was put into it, as I went for the main roles, but of course, NO GRUDGES! And I love drama so even being there is a gift :))

I feel like most people assume that people in ensemble are jealous of leads because in a school musical situation everyone auditions for a lead but only a couple of people actually get it.
Actually I NEVER want to get a part cuz I'm a dancer I would rather be featured dancer
I agree, I personally go for a role based on what I think my enjoyment will be playing that role and not how big it is. I actually prefer if the role I want is smaller because then its more likely I'll get it

Here in New York's commercial theatre, there is quite a lot of discrimination based on body size. Lots of people behind the table refuse to imagine anyone but a traditional thin or muscular lead, regardless of the text. A few shows are better than others, but body diversity is a huge issue in the industry here. For example, there's nothing in the text that suggests Elphaba's size, but she's always played by a similar body type. Meanwhile, Carrie White is described as a bigger girl explicitly in the book but almost every adaption of Carrie (movie and stage) has her played by a thin ingenue. The bias against different bodies, especially in stories about love, is a huge problem in American commercial theatre and I wish it was better.

Same as in Australia sadly...I think we have a much smaller professional industry and theatre culture, and companies rarely take a risk on someone outside the norm. There are some shows that are better - Come From Away comes to mind, possibly because all the characters are intended to look life 'everyday people, and also because it's a newer show. But in general, and particularly in shows that have been around for while, it's rare to see them deviate from the stereotypical body type.
Hmm... interesting this is your opinion. I happen to feel like that’s not true. I’ve seen quite a lot of theatre in NYC (both on and off broadway on average 2-3 shows a month) and I don’t feel this way. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.
PetitChouPumpkin I think it’s not a matter of opinion but maybe just different experiences? I find it interesting that two people in the same kind of thing/place have completely different experiences
The ensemble members being jealous thing might come from community or school theatre, because there is usually some jealousy there.
I hope one day you get to do a Broadway show so you can talk about the differences between Broadway and the West End! I love all your theatre videos so much and as a New York actor I'm always wondering what the similarities/differences are between being an actor here vs in London (and the UK as a whole). Plus, I'd love to see you on stage here! (I saw you as Eponine in 2015 on a choir trip to the UK but I'm dying to see you again.) Maybe ALW's Cinderella will make its way over here with you at some point :D

Talking of "departments" one question I got a lot was how being a swing meant you weren't treated the same as "proper" actors in the cast. To me the hardest role in a company is swing because you need to know the entire show and possibly two or three leads as well just in case. If large shows didn't have swing then they probably wouldn't function as smoothly as they do.

@@endcoral282 The most simple way to explain based off of what I know, a swing is someone who understudies multiple roles and sometimes covers for understudies that are in the cast normally. Basically, if an ensemble member in Hadestown were to play Persephone, a swing would take over for the ensemble’s place, or the swing practices multiple roles in case an understudy and the main cast member are not available. I hope I didn’t make a mistake there and that I hope that helped answer your question!

I’m in drama school and I’m 6ft and I’m constantly being told I’m too tall for a lot of roles, but seeing you with a different body type gives me a bit of hope 😊 thanks carrie
Gwendoline Christie and Elizabeth Debicki seem to be smashing it at the moment. Alison Janney's done pretty great too. Tall girls can get it!
My best friend's dream is to play Christine in Phantom and she has always been told that she's too tall. When we stage doored the show in 2018, she said this to the actor playing the Phantom (who was a very tall man) and he said that she would just need a tall Phantom and that she would be a great height to play opposite him. It totally made her day!
Charlotte Pitt there’s an actor in Hadestown right now who is incredibly tall, so much so that he really stands out and is now sort of known for it! Don’t give up!
I think Sutton Foster is pretty close to 6’ (can’t remember exactly, maybe 5’11?) and as most of us will know, she’s done pretty well for herself 😁 There’s quite a few role models for us short people too out there, like Kristin Chenoweth and Elaine Paige who are both under 5’!
Jacques Daniels I mentioned it in my other comment but just thought I’d reply to you directly too- Kristin Chenoweth is 4’9 too (I believe) and she’s amazing and obviously very successful! There’s also a girl in the current uk tour of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie who’s around a similar height too 😊 Plus the good thing about being on the shorter side (at least as a girl) is that you can always wear heels if they desperately need you to be a little taller, so in theory it’s easier to make a short person look taller than vice versa!
Assumption: You and Bradley Jaden have a competition of who can wear the most rings LOL. I agree with what you said about everyone in ensemble wanting a main role. That's like saying everyone who applies at a company wants to manage it. People are happy being in an accounting pool, HR or customer service. For the record - maybe you don't sing Fantine's songs at home but I always sing Fantine's Death when I come home because I sing to the cat "come to me...I see your food bowl's empty, come to me and I will give you crunchies..." Congrats on Cinderella, I already look forward to December.

Hiya Carrie & other Hopefuls!
Just wanted to put in a perspective from a classically trained ballet dancer about the ensemble/principle role assumption. That assumption is actually very much TRUE IN THE BALLET world and in the dance world in general. Everyone(unless they are a transfer) typically auditions at an entry level position as an intern ( a la NYCB) or as a member of the corps de ballet (ensemble) and it is only through promotion that you can move through the ranks even if sometimes you understudy for a role beyond your rank. It's very competitive in that environment and I know of many amazing dancers who for whatever reason (just not the look or style the director wants for x seasons, limited funds for promotions, age of dancer, history of injuries, etc.,) that cause a dancer to never leave the corps or soloist position or they never get the chance to choreograph within the company and so on. So while I'm super glad to hear that your experience is so different, I do understand at least in some part why the misunderstanding exists. :)
It's also very true in high school and amateur theatre. Everyone wants the main roles and no one auditions just for ensemble. Professional theatre actors have the maturity and experience to understand the importance of EVERYONE in a cast!
professional ballet is a totally different world than professional theater with different positions/ranking systems, I doubt anyone would compare the two processes unless they really just don't know anything about either. the ensemble of a show isn't equivalent to the corps, etc. not to mention the sizing thing is hard enough in theater but ballet it's a hard no on being over a certain size. so yeah, not many of these things can be likened to the ballet world.
@@nalabees Exactly my point. I think there are a lot of dance or ballet themed movies or even theatre themed movies set in high school or college or even professional wherein these worlds are synonomised in the competitive sense (even though they are very different) just because they are both performing arts. The average person doesn't see the world behind the curtain very much if at all and so that is where I am thinking these assumptions Carrie read were coming from. I'm not at all saying that the worlds are the same and am sorry if I mis-conveyed that in my original post :)
Thinking about the passport thing and them giving you a ticket to collect it...surely your photo on the passport is proof enough? I mean that's how we get on planes and travel around the world!

I think the assumption that the ensemble are jealous of main cast members is because at school that's often how it is. Like, everyone wants to be the lead but if you're not that good your teacher casts you as ensemble so that everyone gets a part

summerisanerd yup! A guy in my drama group got Bugsy in Bugsy Malone when he wasn’t even in a production before that, he’s a fab actor, don’t get me wrong, but it seemed like a bit of favouritism at the time :)
At my school, I saw that for sure, but I also definitely saw very talented actors getting passed up for lead roles because the director felt like their level of professionalism would help lead newer ensemble actors in knowing how to behave.
Wow, you truly wear no makeup for Les Mis? That's surprising to me - I'd expect a level of stage makeup at least so your features still show up with the lights. Fascinating.
They’re probably using a lower, more golden light setting, that should be less harsh on their faces :)

I just wanted to say I've been a fan of yours for 6 years now and I've been a fan of les miserable for 8 years and I finally got to see it yesterday and I was blown away! Your portrayal of Fantine made me cry and I am so in awe of you, it was so raw and your rendition of I dreamed a dream was beautiful! Such a perfect cast for my first time watching such an amazing musical💖
Same about crying- I don't usually cry for fantine (mostly because I've simply heard I dreamed a dream too much 😬) but yeah Carrie's portrayal was outstanding!! She didn't throw away the song we all know

Many of my best theatre experiences were as an ensemble actor..no jealousy of the principals, just admiration for the amount of work they have to do.
It’s honestly so disgusting that people discredit your success of getting into the industry to you having a famous brother and connections. As if you and your parents didn’t work incredibly hard to prepare you for being able to take whatever opportunities came your way. Ugh that just makes me so mad.
I agree so hard. I hate when people tell people that they’re only famous because of someone/something else, like maybe they are famous because of that/them, but there is no need to tell them that. And Carrie is also famous, not because of her brother, but because she is talented. Remember Carrie was famous when she was a child, when she was in les mis and chitty chitty bang bang

I work in a receiving house regional theatre in the back office booking all the shows and doing paperwork etc, as well as am dram in my free time. I see so many similarities between the theater world and the culinary world. Like the ensemble/principle roles and chefs/serving staff. The working hours, the family feeling, the stress and nervousness before a "big show" or "opening night" / "big event" or "new menu". Maybe this is why I love your theater vlogs so much because it feels so familiar in a way?

Another question, Carrie, for the EU nationals who are actors, and are working in London, how does BREXIT affect them, working in the UK? Do you know anything about this please or have you heard from your friends?
I'm not Carrie but, EU nationals have to officially apply for a "settled status" in order to stay past the deadline of Dec 31st :)
Adja, I thought so as well. One is happy, that one has settled status :). Sometimes, shows have guest actors from EU countries
@@annikawheble9593 Oh good! When it comes to short term visits/works I think things still need to be sorted out with the EU countries:)
@@annikawheble9593 For actors who do not live in the UK, but are in a musical that is touring the UK/Europe, you would have to apply for a 'Creative Temporary Worker' visa. This allows actors to 'live' (stay) in the UK while they are performing :)

The "you will always know your department the best" is so true. The lead lighting person in a show was my best friend, and so they thought that I knew lighting. One day, he was off and there was a problem, and they asked me to fix it (we are a theater in a school). I had no idea how to do it and so we had to call him when he was unwell, at the start of the show. He didn't pick up. That night was a flop to say the least.

My daughter Hope 17 isn’t in to acting etc but she love make up especially special effects. She’s currently doing her 1st of beauty but her passion for that is like you.
My son 16 did have a passion to join the army but nearly 3 years ago he diagnosed with type 1 diabetes so he’s not allowed to join anymore and he’s really struggling with what to do 🐝❤️

Living in Japan, you get used to the very particular way the Japanese have for doing absolutely everything. I'm not surprised about your passport situation. Even buying tickets to Disney is a process. If you can go, DisneySea is the most amazing park ever! I've been to WDW many times but DisneySea is on an entirely different level.
I missed my cue in dress rehearsal cause I was having a coughing fit backstage & I go yelled at so bad by the director
I work at a theater (graphic design) and we don’t interact with the cast/crew all that much, so I learned a few things from this 💕

At least for highschool theater, the distinction between crew/principal/ensemble isn’t massive. It’s really all mixed in. Like we know who’s a lead we just don’t care. The exception is one show that was a musical cabaret and we kind of had two all female numbers (she’s in love with nine and Cell block tango with six) and there was a bit of pettiness because the teacher kind of blew on the flames of the shes in love girls are less talented/experienced and the cell block are more talented/experienced. (The experience bit was true but talent is iffy) and there was some drama and distinction there. (It was mostly the shes in love girls being jealous)

The thing about principals vs ensemble roles is common in a lot of different industries I think - there's this idea in society that being in a "higher" spot or a singled out spot is better and that everyone wants that. I'm a librarian, and when I was a student there was this whole to do where my class were accused of not being ambitious enough because only a few people responded in a survey that they wanted to be head librarian. And I think that's the wrong way of looking at ambition, because it should be about wanting to be the best at what you want to do, whether that's at the "top of the pack" or in a more "supportive" role.
