I live in constant fear of a tappet adjuster nut coming lose and doing damage to the push rods, tappets or valves. Just like what happened with Fred. I had a tappet adjuster nut come loose and come off on a triumph T140 a few months ago. Luckily I happened to open it up to check (because I'm paranoid and like to check a few times after a valve adjustment) and sure enough one the nuts was just sitting inside the rocker box. No damage was done. It must have right happened before I discovered it. I believe it was user error and I didn't tighten it down properly, but I'm not sure. If I hadn't come across it when I did, it would have created some problems.
Just AMAZING that "Fred" started and ran as well as it did with all that valvetrain carnage !
Lucky to have found that. Dodged a bullet.
