I have watched this movie countless times. Every time it mesmerizes me. Every character delivers perfection just like it is meant to be in Japanese culture.
It’s a myth, a movie about a distance past that dreamed up. I love this movie too especially the intense loyalty to one kingdom and culture. But I think twice before calling Japanese culture perfect
If one wants to learn how to life..watch this film..a ton of hidden messages of discipline, subconscious mind control, fearlessness, honor to the highest form etc. When your way OF LIFE IS A THREAT to your government and that's the reason why, its no different today, just look around, everything is laws, bureaucrats, lobbyists, politicians etc...If you don't believe me, go and try pouring a small concrete pad attached to your house without a permit... this film is everywhere and your fooling yourself if you think freedom exist, its an illusion in one's subconscious. "The Last Samurai" is hands down is Tom's best movie.
I could watch the scene where she dresses him in her dead husband's armor over and over. I only wish the whole scene went on longer so we could see the entire process. Koyuki is simply amazing in this and her beauty is beyond words.
Watching this movie as a father is so much different than before it. Before you have kids you can be Tom Cruise's character Nathan Algren, after having a kid, you are Katsumoto trying to show his son the right way to live. And when he loses his son, having to reconsider every choice he ever made it feels way different.

Absolutely. My favorite Tom Cruise movies are The Last Samurai, Collateral, Edge of Tomorrow, MI Rogue Nation, MI 4 and Mission Impossible 7 from last year; and Top Gun Maverick. The Last Samurai has been my favorite film that he's ever been a part of. It's magical and powerful and beautiful.. There are no films like the Last Samurai in the past decade. For historical period pieces, it is one of my all time favorites.
