    Not only interesting and informative, but the relaxed way you get the message across is perfect. No tense music track, no Zombie Apocalypse, just a calm, resourceful man and his friend having a meal together in the woods...more people should do it, without some imagined terrible scenario to justify it...a modern day Thoreau, thank you for this

    First time I have watched Dave's videos- I'm impressed. Excellent on video instructor- explanations clear, physical skills are demonstrated and not just explained, pace good, and Dave neither talks down or up to the viewer. Two sidebars- he cares about his dog and appears to enjoy a good meal. Both positive qualities.

    Looks delicious. And FAR more financially economical than those pre-packaged "camping" or "trail" foods. A lot of those are ~$12 per serving.

  • @archetypalculinarian
    @archetypalculinarian 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Dave. I appreciate the more approachable way you've taken lately to the people that might be more tentative about getting out. Showing common grocery items is a good link to the real survival skills, that most people that have any interest at all want to learn but are probably too timid to go out and try on their own.
    Thru-hikers don't care about this stuff, and the internet "survivalists" don't care, but the people out there that only have access to local campgrounds and a weekend a month do appreciate it.
    Fire making, is key, not where you get your dinner from. Making sure you have shelter and insulation is key, not the fact that you packed in a taco mix from the grocery store. For backpacking I put old bay in with my salt and my pepper. All things I buy at the store and carry in my cook kit to make my experience better.
    Haters can hate. It's what they do. Those of use who take all the chances we can to be outdoors, understand sometimes that means stopping at the grocery to buy product, and not starving for a week while we make arrowheads and shafts, and a bow to hunt game that probably doesn't exist in our area code... People need to wake up and at least start to reconnect before they start to criticise.

    Great series Dave, camp cooking is my favorite part of being "out there". Good eats can make the difference. Especially on the cold wet, snowy days. Your dog is awesome. You have a very well trained companion there. Keep um coming Dave. Forgot to say I use top ramen mix with my dryed veg mix for a quick meal sometimes when I don''t have time to get fancy. Quick energy and it tastes good..

    Well done Dave. I teach cooking for adult leaders in Boy Scouts. Many of them have never made simple tasty meals like this. They often can only boil water for backpacking meals. My staples are often fingerling potatoes, Brussells sprouts, ham steaks, and pita bread or tortillas. Those pouches of rice are great! I also like to break down and carry only the ingredients from a package of pho bo for soup.

    Great video. Only problem I have is you reusing the water that you boiled the bagged chicken and rice in. I would imagine the toxic chemicals from the ink would leach into the water when you boiled the food in its packaging. The ink used to print the outside of the bag are most likely not food grade and may cause cancer. Just want to point that out.

    Hey brother I've been watching your videos I lucked on to your channel and I just want to add I really enjoy what you do 57 year old disabled that I was a ranger when I was in the military so I'm pretty good about living off the land and also to me and I was born in West Virginia the Appalachian Mountains so you know the survival off the land is pretty much in bread into me that's just it you know that's a good idea to see you know what somebody like you can offer for doing what I'm getting ready to do which is Nomad living I got myself a van I've redone inside very comfortable for one person but you know I love to cook the cooking tips the Sim Simplicity what you're teaching is my whole philosophy on traveling on the road you know how it's I go back to the Pioneer yeah my horse is changed and it's a lot more comfortable now but the ideal about how to feed yourself how to do you know what you're doing when you're out by yourself taking care of yourself in the world especially in the west you know how we how we are we don't ask for anything so if you don't have it you don't eat it cuz you got to take care of your own and I like to keep it simple easy so I appreciate what you're doing

    It's a nice and simple concept with pre-cooked and dehydrated meals. Went this way for many years. Lately though I've been getting away from pre-cooked or any form of processed food and only eat fresh stuff (except for the stuff I fermented myself). Especially on a tour it requires more weight and more space to carry but I'm absolutely convinced it's worth it and much better than processed food out of a factory.
    Locally grown food of the season :) That's what our bodies have adapted to over the past centuries.
