I sure hope Sailing Uma sees this post. That's a very generous and useful offer. BTW I'm Dutch-Indo. First one born in the US after my Dutch speaking family immigrated here from Appledoorn. They were in Sumatra before Holland until after the war. I visited my Great Grandmother in Nederland many years ago. Holland is such a special place.

New subscriber here. There are endless channels with couples floating around the Caribbean, but northern hemisphere sailing is much more interesting with weather and tides and historic locations on shore. Watching your transat (and the excellent hurricane videos) it’s clear you’re both the real deal and really looking forward to following your progress through Europe (you’re not far now from where I keep my boat in Zeeland).

I don't have the severity of the problems that you have Deanie, but I haven't been able to move without my walker for two years now. I had a 4 w bypass and etc in Dec 2016 and a stroke that took away my entire right side in Dec 2019. I lived on my sailboat, a ketch-rigged, full keelboat, with my wife and 2 boys from April 01 till Nov 01 every year from about 1975 until I sold her in 1995. Then I kayaked about 15,500 or so miles in my Sea touring Kayak from 2004 till about 2018. Now I watch with intense interest while my new friends Kika and Dan do marvelous things on their sailboat.

Did you know that the channel was constructed between 1865 and 1876 and before that time the opening to the North Sea was where you are anchored now at Buiten-IJ, used to be a sea but now it is fresh water. In the days of the VOC the small ships used to take all the goods around to Texel to load them on or off the big ships that would sail to the East Indies.

Without an engine you are not allowed on the noordzeekanaal. Sailing on the noordzeekanaal you must have an engine on standby which is capable of a minimum speed of 6kmh(3.3kts)

    • @IWLDELJ
      @IWLDELJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@msnpassjan2004 Haha, it's not very effective. I've only done it twice. Once, my brother and I were rowing with my wife on tiller, the other time was quite a bit more successful. Back when I had a motor, I took a bachelor party sailing. When we sailed off the dock, I explained to them how I consider using the engine as admitting defeat, and we had a laugh. Fast forward to later that night, the wind died completely, when we were about two hundred meters from the dock. We sat there for probably fifteen minutes with no change, so I went to crank up the engine, and the four guys that I had taken out protested, reminding me that I'd told them that was admitting defeat for me. I laughed and told them I had paddles. With zero hesitation, they rowed us the last two hundred meters, hahaha.

Brilliant , I did the same trip down the Nord Sea canal to Amsterdam after arriving in a gale. We also sailed down the canal( no marina at Ijmuiden). When we arrived in Amsterdam we discovered they were in the middle of the 700th anniversary of being declared a 'city'. There were 2 dozen tall ships and thousands of yachts parading around the canal in front of Amsterdam! We didn't even know it was on!
You are going to love the Islemeer and the Netherlands one of my favorite place to cruise to! Mooring up in the middle of 1000 year old towns like Hoorne. Have a great time , and take you time . Go to Friesland too!

Amsterdam is about 230, -40 km away from my hometown Bonn, former capital of West Germany. My friends and I visited a lot of times Amsterdam.
With 16 I hitchhiked to Amsterdam on my way to Ireland.
    Great city, great nightlife.

⛵ Great episode. You mentioned it was a tight Marina, it sure looked like it to me too. You did some nice maneuvering to get into your slip. Wishing you safe sailing. Thank you for the video.

Hey. You made it to my my old stomping grounds. I love the way you didn't even try to pronounce the name of the lake you're on. What's the matter? Can't pronounce IJsselmeer?😁

I'm shocked by the lack of masks and social distancing, WOW. I thought it was slack in Montreal as were reopen. Good to see you are on the move, and that your new electric motor has some range as well. Keep making Canada and Haiti proud.

Welcome to mainland Europe and the locks.
A little advice on the locks. If you run a line from the winch in the cockpit, up on land and back down on Uma, you can control how tight the line gets, from the cockpit, and that way Kika or Dan won’t have to stand/sit with it in the hands while going up or down.
Just an advice, from a Caledonian Canal veteran 😉

It is so nice to see you here in my country! I have been following you guys from the beginning. And last year or the year before I was in Mexico cause my husband had a job in Quretero. And we saw you cycling across the street when we visited a place near Cancun...Unable to contact you at that moment. What can I say you are such a nice couple and I love every video. Thanks for all the nice stuff and keep enjoying life the way you do! Big hug, Erik

I visited Amsterdam last year and had a wonderful time.
If they are open, visit the Rijks museum & the palace, you won't regret visiting them both.

    Welcome in The Netherlands
Don't worry about anchoring in shallow waters. All grounds are sand and mud. With light weather you can even purposely run aground to stay somewhere a few hours :-)
on Markermeer watch out for waterplants (fonteinkruid) especially between Marken-Hoorn. You can expect to swim to clear your prop again. IJsselmeer doesn't have that problem
    Enjoy your stay

Welcome to NL! Looking forward to see how you experience our fresh water sailing (especially how you experience the electric motor in the sometimes busy waters). Ps. My big tip: don't forget the 'islands in the Waddenzee' (Terschelling) and try to 'dry up' for a day and collect your own mussels for diner!
