I have seen this several times and it never fails to make me laugh. Woody Allen’s facial expressions and body language are great and so amusing; his pace is also on point!
this man is one of the world's few great geniuses. His movies are both the funniest and saddest I've ever seen, and that's a rare quality in a filmmaker. ARTIST!
Genius. The bit itself is brilliant. And the timing and delivery is as well. From time to time I have to listen to this. And even though I know it well, it still makes me laugh every time :-)
Who are these idiot trolls on here talking like this isn't good? This is brilliant! God forbid a comedian tell a joke that isn't a one-liner or full of cussing (don't get me wrong, I love George Carlin and Kat Williams, too), this is sophisticated comedy. I guess the short-attention span that's developed over the decades in our nation misses the comedic irony of the tale. Woody Allen always has been a genious. And he is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, even if the fools don't see it.
some people have commented on woody's movements being strange or wishing he'd be still. woody is massively influenced by groucho marx. his movement shows this and is all part of the act. he's a genius with superb comic timing.
Dracopol lol you got the punchline completely wrong. It’s “there’s a law in New York State against driving with two Jewish people on your fender, Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and ESPECIALLY Saturday.” It’s genius because Religious Jews are not allowed to drive on Saturday. That’s why you see the Orthodox walking on Saturday. You’re probably gentile (not Jewish) so no worries for not truly getting the genius behind the punchline. But there would be no law (Jewish Law or other against tying someone to a fender. But it would be morally wrong lol:)))
Exactly Gary. I’m too tired to watch this video now but if my memory is correct at the end of the bit he changes it from the original “and the joke is on them, cuz it’s restricted” to “and the joke is on them, cuz they don’t allow Jews”. Because this was England, Woody was afraid they wouldn’t get what “restricted” meant in reference to being a member of the NY Athletic Club. So he literally had to spell it out to the audience that they don’t allow Jews, and not just say it was “restricted”. But most everyone in the 1960’s in America knew what restricted meant as it related to Jews not being allowed to join certain country clubs. That’s why the Catskills was created. A place for Jews to play golf, dine, and use the country club pool like the rich Wasps of that era. Update: just watched video. He even changed that line from NY Athletic Club to NY Golf Course since he didn’t need to reference it as a private club anymore since he didn’t use the word restricted and simply said they don’t allow Jews. p.s. if you just TH-cam the moose woody Allen and listen to the original (audio only) version of this bit it’s so much funnier. He even says the moose mingled (at the party). Did very well. Scored. He says it differently here after going to the buffet table. It’s way scaled down to make sure they got his style of humor.
Woody Allen was a stand up comic of genius. And he never ever resorted to profanity. Not once. Unlike today when every other word a comic utters is profane.
Woody Allen is, honestly, the greatest comedy writer I've ever seen. The guy was writing material in the 1960s that is still, frankly, the funniest shit I have ever read. I don't think I find any other comedy that old funny, and in my opinion, THAT is genius.
Before this one, I watched Woody's 6 minute routine back in 1963 (Steve Allen show), 60 years later, most of it was still very relevant and even more funny. Thank God for Woody and his movies and his humor.
Comic genius, love his stand up years, my favourite movie is "Broadway Danny Rose". I first watched it one evening on my own, fell off the sofa laughing. Almost as embarrassing as laughing aloud whilst reading a book on the underground !!
My brother had the two album set of Woody Allen's stand up and when I was a baby, he used to play this. I thought it was hilarious. Woody Allen was a funny stand up back in the beginning of his career...
The bit that cracks me up the most is when he normally says: The moose starts to mingle... Goes to the buffet table, some guy tries to sell him insurance... Cracks me up !
this is insanely good. never watched woody allen before, will have to start now. nods a lot but compared to michael mc intyre he's paraplegic. stuff like this doesnt die.
I have this entire show on video, it is possibly my favourite stand-up routine of all time. It was a one-off impromptu show he recorded while in England filming "What's new pussycat". The only thing that spoiled it was the truly awful lounge singer "Danny Meehan" who apperared in the interlude. I wish I had the facility to upload it.

His standup was brilliant
