I'm so glad you kept the first 4 minutes and 30 seconds of this video. It really provides a huge amount of context for the accident. Plus it was very exciting.
I thought some of the performances could have been a little more, I dunno, nuanced, maybe? But the deep themes and contextual juxtaposition made for a fascinating watch nonetheless.
Jonny O Oh what a surprise, Jonny nit picking... Again! When will you just back off and appreciate a film for what it is for once in your life. Not everything can be a masterpiece, even though this does come close.
From what i heard the instructor said (in an austrian dialect): "can't you be careful you idiot, you came here so fast, didnt you see us." Then he says loudly to himself: "SUCH AN IDIOT" and asks him "are you drunk or what???" haha i would have gone nuts too
How didnt he manage to see the group of people ahead? I am usually going faster than this dude and never ever got even close to crashing into someone ahead of me. Blue skies, good conditions. The group may have been slow, which is ok IMO, there's still plenty of space to pass savely… everyone makes mistakes but wow… I hope it didn't ruin this beautiful day at a beautiful ski resort
+Andreas Hoppe Ibeen skiing for 19 years, I've seen this happen so many times and the story is always the same. New beginners who get too much confidence and decides to take up some speed and at that point they realise they can't handle it. Worst case you end up crashing into someone really bad.
I know- I just wanted to declare that it wasn't my purpose to sound smart. I make skiing mistakes too from time to time usually not very often but when I do it's always funny to watch xD I guess… I remember the other day when I was 15 or something I was just STANDING on the side of the slope and with my left ski I accidently slipped over my ski stick and slipped down the entire slope (1 kilometer :D) and when I arrived at the end of the slope I was fulf of snow… and shit also xD just kidding… The thing is that often when we go skiing we want to prove others our abilities and compare ourselves with others and stuff but that's really not the purpose of skiing, is it? It's when we get rit of this skiing beginns to be much more joyful and fun, no matter if you're going fast or slow...
+Andreas Hoppe Because your someone who thinks he's fast. If you were actuary fast you would know that when a group like them is blocking the entire fucking run it's pretty hard to doge. Your group is dumb as fuck. Don't make a fucking line across the run that faster people can't avoid. Holy fuck. If you block the whole run what the fuck do you think is going to happen. If your that fucking slow/shit at skiing go do the fucking bunny hill where you belong.
How can you judge my skiing skills when you haven't even seen me ski at all?? I've been skiing all my life since I was 3 years old I can ski on any slope. I can ski any hill, whether it is on the slope or in deep snow … I am not saying I was the best skier in the world because that would be wrong and ignorant. But that's not what skiing all about unless you're a ski racer. It's about enjoying your day in the alps and skiing can be really fun and should be. But I am confident enough to ski at a fast pace without crashing into other people … and I this dude is not even close to being fast and this hill's not even steep at all!!! He's the one who's out of control.
Amazing how some idiots look to pass blame to the instructor and try and apply the rules of the road to the slopes?! Clearly the accident was caused solely by the on-rushing skier with relatively little experience, out of control, not looking ahead at what was happening downhill (which a skier would have observed from 500 metres up slope). If you can accurately apply any driving 'rules' to the slopes it is that whoever is behind will almost always be at fault (singular exception that comes to mind is a driver not indicating and moving into a right hand lane cutting across a car in that lane. (note it does not apply to a car moving left without signalling as that would be the fault of the on-coming vehicle for overtaking on the inside). Anyway, clearer rules on the slopes ... don't ski into anyone and if you can't ski that well go slowly so you can stay in control.
Had that happen in Val Thorens once; ski instructor caught him against the edge of the piste, turned in front and simply held out his hand and said "pass". Was only midweek so just took €150 worth off this guy and left him there in the middle of the slopes. Got to love ski guides sometimes =D
This reminds me of when I was skiing on a wide slope a couple of years ago, doing regular carved turns, and a guy skiing faster than he could control hit me from behind so hard it knocked me out. I think some people travel at speeds greater than where they are able to turn or stop from - and get such tunnel vision they can't pay attention to what is in front of them.
Point of information. This is Austria. They don't do Green runs, they only have Blue, Red and Black. And very few Austrian blacks would be Black in France (with exceptions). Blue runs are 100% where beginners ought to be learning. And it's your job to ski round them. I love skiing in Austria, only 7 days to go :-).
I liked it. It took me back to the time when I could tell I was getting better day by day, whereas now I am getting worse year by year. TH-cam is full of GoPro footage of knarly dudes shredding it (as I believe they phrase it in the vernacular) This was much more typical. And, in my opinion, the uphill skier had no excuse. And the downhill skier doesn't need any excuse. Unless, of course, the uphill skier was failing to save his own fall. Which is a strong possibility.
After 30 years of skiing, last year my wife was run down on the skislope in a very similar way. She suffered a bad tibial plateau fracture with complications. She's now 48, handicapped for life and will never ski again. All caused by one stupid skier who needed to ski faster then his abilty permitted. You see that kind of skiers way too often.
So sad to hear that. Easily avoided. At 50 just getting back to skiing and having the time of my life. Seems more education required for beginners to teach importance of skiing to ability and controlling speed.
+Lee Smallwood That happens when idiots that cant ski (mostly tourists) go too fast down the track... Nothing against tourists, austrias economy lives by them, but if you cant ski that well, just dont go too fast and train yourself... They go 70kph down the pist and they couldnt even stop or maneuver themselves, they are the passengers on their skis... you can go fast though if you can ski well... just be safe
+Matt.. Spot on Matt, as the masses have started taking to Skiing/Snowboarding you will get more idiots like this that think they can ski but don't realise that they are actually way out of control.
+Matt.. I have just been skiing and it was in Italy and I found that the people that are worst than begginers are the ones who are really good and that being a good skier gets to their head and feel that they have the right over many other begginers/ intermediate and they are so inconsiderate towards the younger ones like myself by pushing or speeding past etc and that ruins the fun for all of us
to be fair the skiiers were snaking in THE MIDDLE OF THE SLOPE!! and the snake they were doing was huge. the rider was probably just a normal rider going at a normal, fast pace like i do and didn't have the time to react. imagine suddenly being faced with a maze of humans all slowly and unpredictably moving in one direction, there is a slight moment of panic and maybe the rider just misjudged where he needed to go. it happens from time to time and i think the instructor should have done a tighter snake bcuz there are also fast people on pistes and dumb ppl and the instructor should have taken that into account. the rider himself is also very much at fault but the blame should be spread 25:25:50 going by Intructor:Skiier:Rider
+StudioStuff I agree. Those massive groups of newbie-skiiers are damn annoying, but come on. He should've seen them from a mile away and either slowed down or figured out a way to avoid them safely.
+StudioStuff This is the dumbest post Ive read on you tube. First off the skiier below you has the RIGHT OF WAY. It is the uphill skiiers responsibility to avoid the skiier below them. This is the same as being in a car on a highway. Skiier Responsibility Code (yes I know they are in Austria) Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. The instructor is using a wider "Snake" so the students slow down by turning across and up the hill. This gives them time to prepare for the next turn. Very useful when the pitch is steeper. If they did tighter turns the students could increase their speed and ski out of control. These students motion is about as predictable as it gets. The person that caused the accident is liable for any medical bills incurred during this accident. This person also should go back to the beginner area and sign up for a lesson.
Daymon Gray right. first off i know that he is technically liable for what has happened but i know what might have went through his head. what happened is a bit like if a person catches his girlfriend cheating on his best friend and beats his girlfriend into a pulp. yes, it is his fault for ALL the damage caused but also it is understandable to a certain extent. now im not saying that this was the same thing as a murder or as assault but its the idea of how i, and others, can relate to him. and yes, i get it, legally he is the one responsible but to be fair he just didn't want to stop EVERY SINGLE 3 MINUTES because some instructor wanted ton make sure his students didn't go too fast( this is perfectly fine, i know) so if you want to prioritise safety, lets just not ski because when skiing accidents happen every day. you know what lets also not drive cars because that shit is dangerous. my point is that risks have to be taken for ANYTHING to be fun(personally speaking) and the judgement of some of those risks means that only a couple of inches will seperate me from the next skiier. most of the time it works out but from time to time, shit happens. also, in regard to the snake, the instructor was could have done a tighter snake and just made his students take longer to do it. doing a snake doesn't mean you have to complete each turn quicker and quicker the tighter it gets. all im saying is that the snake should have been a litttle tighter to not block up the F***ING piste.
+StudioStuff A typical Austrian ski school is a long slow snake in the middle of the slope. Crashing in them in Austria because u didn't expect them is like chrashing against a tree in the woods, because u didn't expect them :DD Im in Austria every winter, so I can also say that mostly it's very easy to overtake them even in higher speeds because they are very predictable and leave some space (here on the right side).
As a novice skier, I WANT my instructor to go nuts on anyone who wipes me out, when it's clear I'm a student under instruction. Knowing that I'm a novice, I try to keep my turns regular, and my speed constant, while I work on my technique, so that I'm predictable and anybody uphill can see what I'm about to do. Anybody who bowls into a student group like that (a line of people carefully following an instructor is obviously a class) deserves a good thumping. If you cannot control your speed, you should not be on a blue, and you should probably be in ski school yourself.
This is just like the roads, whether it be cars or people on bicycles, those that go too fast for their abilities and take risks usually end up hurting someone else. Anyone stating it's the learners fault for being rammed into then IF you have a driving license I suggest you hand it in to the authorities of your country and sell your vehicle and give up driving for the safety of everyone!
No excuse at all. The hill was not crowded. Good visuals. This like a blue or green run. Ski schools are common on blue and green, down hill had right of way. Not sure why posters are blaming ski schools? As beginner the ski instructor will use a lot traversing. Fall line skiing is not day one!
POV: you catch the low side of the piste on a sloped pow in the middle of January on a 13.5 degree binding gear adjusted to 286.33 nanonewtons of torque on an inclined, rope side, A-gap 3.5 centered offset while accounting for a drop shoulder of 37 degrees northwest side all while the passenger side-most skier has 13.6 degree bindings coupled with an incline torque acceleration ratio of 3.56:2:87. Do you prefer 13.6 or the 13.5 degree incline adjust with accelerated drag momentum to accommodate the low side piste on a cold winter day when carving ski deflection is lowest?
I was once riding a bit too fast and then a line of young students taking the entire width of the slope just appeared out of nowhere. I kinda managed to squeeze in between two of them but yeah, not pretty.
So wait... You think the students down the slope were to blame for taking the whole width of the slope? The slope belongs to the people ahead of you - it's not your private playground. You realize it's your responsibility to make sure the area ahead of you is safe to ski into, right? And how exactly do people downslope "appear out of nowhere"? Were these students from Hogwarts practicing magical rematerialization? Maybe in future you should inform the ski instructors which parts of the slope are off limits to the people in front of you. When they stop laughing, maybe they'll teach you how to behave on the mountain.
The instructor is right to go balistic. Most guys out on the slopes don't even know the rules. Beginners taking the big turns and confiscating the whole slope can be annoying, but they do have right of way.
+Dylan Garnett It is not australia, it is austria (country in central europe) the ski instructor talks to the guy that ran over the student in an austrian dialect, i think it might be a tyrolean accent, not sure though.
If you want to ski fast, take it on a steep black trail and have total control of yourself, not on a blue trail with people learning to ski. The uphill skier always must always have total control.
First of all, the instructor should tell your students to look up hill before pulling out into traffic. Even though the uphill skier is responsible to avoid people below, when they finish a turn and plan on going across the slope, look up hill to make sure you don't cut a downhill skier off. 0:45 This is why I don't like going ahead of my students unless they were already good skiers. Now the students have to help the woman up. 1:25 Again, I don't see one student looking up hill as they move Across the Downhill skiers. That means they haven't been told to. Notice how the camera man never looks up hill after a turn.Just make believe you are in a car. All the rules apply to skiing. That's how it's easy to remember them. 4:30 The trail gets steeper and they cross it more to control their speed. They NEVER look up hill. The skier causing the collision was not paying attention to what was going on ahead of him nor slowing down when the Traffic became more congested. This is yet Another reason as an instructor, you ask your strongest skier to lead the class to a specific visual location and stop them. The instructor could have been up there to warn the students of downhill skiers and tell the down hill skiers to slow down. Ultimately the downhill skier or skier behind you, was at fault but the instructor's Class Handling needs a Lot of work. P.S. The whole time they were making turns I couldn't keep my legs still under the desk!
You never go ahead of your students ? im a ski teacher myself i always make my group follow me , because in the end most of the stuff they learn is from watching how you as the teacher ski, they cant see you when youre at the back now can they ? Also the people skiing behind you should always be paying atenttion to the people who ski in front , that guy who crashed into that student was 100% in the wrong, the only time you should be wary of the people behind you is when you stand still and plan on continuing your downhill decent or if your doing some special manouver.
Nythial I suggest you take my comments to heart. I hover around the weaker students like a mother hen. I never get too far ahead or behind them. They do NOT watch you when they follow you as they are too busy watching the ground in front of them. A "Special Maneuver" is traversing across the slope. The vast majority of skiers stay near the fall line. Students, tend to connect their turns with a long traverse. That is just like changing lanes on the highway. You have to look back to make sure there is no one coming before you cut in front of them. When you follow them and they are watching the ground you can talk them through what they are supposed to be thinking about. Use the same simple words in a rhythm they can memorize. You are teaching a class Nothing when you are 60 feet ahead of them. They are totally on their own and learning Nothing because they can't See or Hear you.
Well i cant say ive ever had any problems with the way ive done things, tho i do always make sure i dont take up the entire slope like the teacher did with this group. My style has always worked perfect for me, no accidents , no hate just success.
oke the students have to look out a bit but the downhill skier should have been e little bit more careful. a couple of seconds before the crash they went over a drop so the downhill skier couldn't see everything in of him so he should have slowed down. And as a beginning skier its already hard enough to stay in the line. so continiusly looking round is sometimes a bit to much to ask. And that is also a reason why you ski in 1 line. So it is clear where these people will pas and it is clear from far away what areas you need to avoid
Here in Australia the code on all Mountains is that you're responsible to EVERYONE in front of you and no one behind, being that I am becoming an instructor we are taught often to look behind for inexperienced skiers out of control, you would be surprised how many skiers I have physically caught who could not stop while shadowing full instructors.
+ABitWiseGuy I always look behind me when i start going down a piste... it avoided so many accidents for me... (there is no code for it in austria but good skiers just do it to avoid accidents with new skiers...)
So true, you want to be aware of everything going on around you and that includes paying attention to what is going on uphill from you, especially when you start off the lift.@@matt3ominer
2:18 I get that piste is relatively large but stopping in the middle of the piste isn't fair too other skiers where as the group could have stopped towards the edge but I get that they are learning to ski and may not be comfortable the a sort of jump turn to be able to set off again which they may have had to do if they were very close to the edge of the piste. (nice little argument with my self there think it's time to go to sleep)
Well, a slow moving person might expect to get hit if he is an obstacle on a red or black run, beyong his ability. But to get hit on a wide blue run... The instructor was rightfully mad!
***** yes it is i live in europe dont tell me it aint a piste is a prepared skiing slope it doesn't matter the difficulty thats what the colours are for. green being the easiest. and black the hardest. they can be any kind.
***** a fresh powder run is also a slope. unless u want to go OFFpiste then u are no longer on a slope a slope is by definition prepared. ur english noun things dont apply on french words piste = french
nathan marcheray because hes going t hat fast on a begginer fucking hill. Dont be a douche bag and if your going on hills with begginers slow the fuck down
Eskil Solberg Sure, it could have, but I had happened to see in the description that the poster had pointed out the exact time to skip to to see just the crash, so the video was about 30 seconds for me. I could see being upset if they didn't point that out, but they did. Cheers.
That ski school is taking so much room up on the piste FairPlay the blokes out of control but still ski schools in my experience always cut across piste and don’t look at their surroundings and look in front of them
I went skiing with my school to Austria a few months ago and it was good nothing like this happened but where abouts in Austria was this I don't recognise it but it looks good for beginners like me who are necessarily that good
So many people here and other videos comparing a run to a highway. From now on, you're only allowed to pass on the left side and you must slow down when riding on the right side of a run. And use hand signals to indicate your turns. Seriously... we're skiing/snowboarding here, not commuting to work.
Its not 100% the incoming skier's fault. The ski group takes 90% of the piste with a very slow speed. But most important you can see the piste just a little above where the "crash"happened its like 10 meters of ice
ppl need to calm the fuck down xD it was a freaking accident shit's happens and it fking hurts, but srsly it was the other skiers fault 100% but overreacting like that is just stoopid, this man needs to be fired asap
Being an instructor, you take the health of your students very seriously. I know people who have been paralyzed because of people who ski out on control. Skiing slow and in control is harder than skiing out of control. You are responsible for avoiding ANYONE DOWNHILL OF YOU. The problem is the newest generation of skiers/snowboarders are not taught the "responsibility code". If you don't follow the code, it's like driving down the road and ignoring all signs and signals...Collisions should be RARE on the ski slope. Falling is a risk, but collisions should not be. If you can't control yourself to avoid other people, you need a lesson or stay on the bunny hill until you can master that. I've had too many close calls where someone who has no business being on a double black almost took me out. One bad collision can end the sport for some. My Dad is 73 and got taken out last year at Breckenridge. Could have ended his life, luckily he was not badly hurt. Control first, then speed
Nothing more annoying then having a ski school on the sidewinder (thats at whitetail small resort) take up 90% of the slope but having them go so slow on these big gaping turns if just erks me but I can usually snowboard past them without a little girl cutting me off
+Chase Baxter Dang people learning! how dare they! They should learn on their own through much trial and error. Preferably off the sides of the runs out of other peoples way. Who wants an experts opinion anyways?
for everyone saying they can't take up the entire run. they can take up the entire run. reasons, have to pay for so much more than just a lift ticket. they can take up the entire slope if need be cuz they are paying 200 to 500 dollars more to learn to ski the right way.
When a soldier in the seventies I attended the Austrian Ski Teacher School in Zell am See a couple of times. I was a practice student and the only American. They are great teachers. I this student doesn't seem to know how to get up yet she does a decent stem turn. This could be her second day of maybe the end of the first.
Comments on these videos always blow my mind. People blaming downhill skiers for being too slow or turning too wide. o_O I've been skiing and snowboarding for 30+ years and I've never had a problem tapping the breaks and being patient when navigating around people who are learning. If you are such an awesome skier then it shouldn't be a problem and if you aren't such an awesome skier then maybe you should slow the hell down and ski in control until you get better.
I wanted to whack a snowboarder for running into one of my students from behind not once but twice it happened to the same girl within the lesson hour, it wasn't the same snowboarder though but he certainly deserved a good whack, she was in pain but fortunately not injured.
Thats no ones fault yes that person was going fast but it was over a blind roller and the guy was already on the brakes before the collision, if anything the instructor should have foreseen that and kept the group tighter or had a nother person directing traffic in the rear
It really upsets me that winter SPORTS have become a circus for egomaniac douchebags. The ski driver who is responsible for the crash has to take others in account as well. Besides that the slope was easy enough to ride down the mountain safely and controllably.
Hit a lady once at Copper Mountain when I was in college.....was sure I was going to get sued. Tight, Icy run at the end of the day and in a hurry and boom, blew her up! Fortunately, she was just a little sore but no injuries. Take er easy out there.
+Matthew Ford he can't do that, as long as there is no one injured, there is pretty much no law on austrian pistes. The only real law is that you may not escape if you hit someone, you can get punished for that. There is not even a law against "drunk skiing" xD
+Matt.. There is no "special" law that is correct, but every other law applies, if you hurt someone and don't help them, that is illegal no matter if you are on a ski piste or wherever.
I agree, here in western pa we have some nice resorts but not as beautiful as this one. One issue here in 2023 is the weather has been unusually warm and makes the snow conditions sluggish.
Okay, the guy seems really dumb, but is it mandatory to take THAT much space on the pist and to go THAT slow ? :/ It’s like going at 5km/h on the highway with a truck taking 2.5 out of the three ways..
woodledog Then just go on the side of the pist, no need to take the same space as an airplane.. You don’t need to do such big turns at this speed, even as a beginner.
Nassim Eddequiouaq In short: Yes, it is necessary to go that slow and use that much space. This instructor is going the exact speed necessary to teach parallel skiing properly and the speed is picked just so the people in the group can learn it properly. Higher speed would effect the position and therefor would defeat the purpose of practice. I understand it is difficult to understand this if you don't have any proper ski qualifications but unfortunately it's just the way it is.
Common for out-of-control skiers who think they are good at skiing because they are fast. Often cussing out slower skiers who are "in their way". A good skier would never has caused this accident.
So many ignorant people giving the car taking up multiple lanes in the highway example, that’s very flawed. They’re beginners, so they’re like what you would be practicing in the parking lot. The highway is the more advanced terrain, the people who have been driving for a long time and have experience. The instructor is the parent teaching their kid to drive (in the parking lot). Downhill skier/boarder has the right of way, no matter what. No argument, go ask the patrollers or staff at your mountain if you’re that fucking ignorant.
Blue slopes are not just for beginners but excess speed by some is a constant danger which the instructor could could have negated by keeping the group within one side of the piste. Also having a steeper section means that the group disappears from sight from those above and anybody coming down fast has very little time to react. The camera person was actually in danger by staying where he was. On having a fall the group above the victim should group at that point giving both protection to the fallen person and not having a group spread out across a slope waiting for instruction. As a point of interest the guy was very likely a local who liked speed (hence no sticks) and took off at the crest not seeing the group spread out across the slope below. It is swings and roundabouts the good skier speeding on a blue slope and a learner on a black both are the cause accidents as is all to often the case.
+Frederick Bennett I am a ski instructor and from what I can see in this video they did keep to the skiers left of the piste, but more to the point there was plenty of room to go around, the first thing I looked for was to see if they had stopped under a roller but they weren't stopped. It was unarguably the fault of the guy who was out of control, the person below always has the right of way. As for the 'local who likes speed' remark, any half-decent skier at that speed could have turned to the right, when you are skiing fast you have to look further down the hill to be prepared to avoid people in the way as you have less time to react. No poles is not an indicator of someone who likes speed either, it can be an indicator of a park skier but even they carry short poles most of the time. Have a search for Ted Liggety and see how often he skis without poles as a skier who 'likes' speed. Poles are a huge part of good skiing.
+Frederick Bennett The guy has sticks... and based on his body position and how he reacted once he realized he was about to hit someone he also has no business going that fast. He's so far in the back seat of course he couldn't turn...
Oh man... thats just crasy! -could easily have caused major damage! -Glad i did not experience that on my own body during my trip to Austria a few weeks back!
Hardly what I would consider going "nuts." And to think I waited for that all that four minutes of fluff at the beginning that I'm never getting back...
I'm so glad you kept the first 4 minutes and 30 seconds of this video. It really provides a huge amount of context for the accident. Plus it was very exciting.

Too bad there wasn't an entire mountain for that guy to be going down away from the learners... oh, wait...
From what i heard the instructor said (in an austrian dialect): "can't you be careful you idiot, you came here so fast, didnt you see us." Then he says loudly to himself: "SUCH AN IDIOT" and asks him "are you drunk or what???" haha i would have gone nuts too

+Dmitry Fatiev Man, if only somebody had put where the crash occurred in the description or something...

+Andreas Hoppe You can see that this skier was't experienced much more than those in "snake"...
He's the one who's out of control.
oh the legendary snake, how I dread that awful beast

+Aloha Snackbar truuueeeee gay ass scooters
+Liam MacDonald Haha weve all been there
+Liam MacDonald We call em swingers or snailtrail
Any time I see learner groups, I let them go down or I wait till I see them take a break and pass. They always take the whole slope vs picking a line.
Skiing doesn't take place on a road, but a more so unpredictable sea of snow. Keep this in mind as well.
Like your asking to be hit if your going down the mountain in a snake
Had that happen in Val Thorens once; ski instructor caught him against the edge of the piste, turned in front and simply held out his hand and said "pass". Was only midweek so just took €150 worth off this guy and left him there in the middle of the slopes.
Got to love ski guides sometimes =D
that's what I was hoping this guy would do. He didn't go "nuts." Considering the situation, he did relatively nothing.
btw, where in Austria is this place? really nice slope
4:32 zat is how ze zay get out of ze vay in Austria.
+misterfunnybones lol move bitch get out the way
🤣🤣🤣
Point of information. This is Austria. They don't do Green runs, they only have Blue, Red and Black. And very few Austrian blacks would be Black in France (with exceptions). Blue runs are 100% where beginners ought to be learning. And it's your job to ski round them. I love skiing in Austria, only 7 days to go :-).
could have trimmed the video a tad. not sure we needed 5.36mins of snake action
4:30 ouch
It was definitely painful for her... but the shock was even more!
+Lee Smallwood
That happens when idiots that cant ski (mostly tourists) go too fast down the track...
+Matt.. Yeah, most of the time they happen to be russians..
He should've seen them from a mile away and either slowed down or figured out a way to avoid them safely.
vxnt yse but sometimes after an hour or so of nice and quick skiing i try try to just race past which usually works instead of slowing every 3 min :)
+StudioStuff This is the dumbest post Ive read on you tube. First off the skiier below you has the RIGHT OF WAY. It is the uphill skiiers responsibility to avoid the skiier below them. This is the same as being in a car on a highway.
Skiier Responsibility Code (yes I know they are in Austria)
Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
Crashing in them in Austria because u didn't expect them is like chrashing against a tree in the woods, because u didn't expect them :DD
Im in Austria every winter, so I can also say that mostly it's very easy to overtake them even in higher speeds because they are very predictable and leave some space (here on the right side).
Too much excitement for me, the build-up was so tense, and then...the INSTRUCTOR GOES NUTS. TH-cam should have a warning here for sensitive viewers.
Love the snowboarder that just plops down and watches
+rbfabc He plopped down , AND BACK TRACKS, to help get HER POLES...TO HELP
That's called an ad hominem. It's essentially conceding the argument. Thanks.
No need to get carried away guys : D Oh wait, this is the internet.
Do you talk like that when you're not behind a screen too? :x
Its their fault. Its like being parked on a highway.
Where exactly is that ski resort? Looks great!
Great view! Where is this exactly?
Why did they stand in the midle of the piste? They want more?
Why do you have a camera on the bunny hill
After watching this video I decided that I`m going to Austria soon. Thanks.
The instructor is right to go balistic. Most guys out on the slopes don't even know the rules. Beginners taking the big turns and confiscating the whole slope can be annoying, but they do have right of way.
My god its gorgeous out there! Good clean video but probably could have been a bit shorter ;) What resort is this?
How did you manage to get that quality out of that GoPro model? Did you use any software to edit in post?
I mean they did effectively take up 3/4 of the hill though he should have been able to turn to the right or left if he had any type of control.
Anyone know where in Austria this is?
Anyone know what resort this is?
Yeah i wanne know too
Looks like the east side of guthega mountain in Perisher
+Dylan Garnett
It is not australia, it is austria (country in central europe)
the ski instructor talks to the guy that ran over the student in an austrian dialect, i think it might be a tyrolean accent, not sure though.
Hochgurgl-Obergurgl In austria, been there 8x.
Did you have your camera on a chest mount?
+Matthew4799 I think it's a helmet mount.
Where in Austria was this?..nice slope for the children
So it is clear where these people will pas and it is clear from far away what areas you need to avoid
and from the way he tried to avoid the collision the downhill skier when way to fast for his skill level
What is the place?
where is this place ?
where is this exactly?
Where in Austria??
is this the go pro 3 or 4?
why us my head relating this to tandem drifting?
Where is it???
Here in Australia the code on all Mountains is that you're responsible to EVERYONE in front of you and no one behind, being that I am becoming an instructor we are taught often to look behind for inexperienced skiers out of control, you would be surprised how many skiers I have physically caught who could not stop while shadowing full instructors.
+ABitWiseGuy
I always look behind me when i start going down a piste... it avoided so many accidents for me... (there is no code for it in austria but good skiers just do it to avoid accidents with new skiers...)
+G. C. Joseph Seiler Really? Haha I'm gonna use that from now on :P.
So true, you want to be aware of everything going on around you and that includes paying attention to what is going on uphill from you, especially when you start off the lift.@@matt3ominer
Why didn't you ski on down to see if you could help? And to get the confrontation on video?
MsBamafanatic hes a begginer. Thats why hes taking lessons.
(nice little argument with my self there think it's time to go to sleep)
by far the coolest channel on youtube
Well, a slow moving person might expect to get hit if he is an obstacle on a red or black run, beyong his ability. But to get hit on a wide blue run... The instructor was rightfully mad!
what is a piste?
+Jmyster4 slope
+Jmyster4 a slope of any kind
green Blue red black (daimond double daimond etc)
*****
yes it is i live in europe dont tell me it aint a piste is a prepared skiing slope it doesn't matter the difficulty thats what the colours are for.
green being the easiest. and black the hardest.
they can be any kind.
***** a fresh powder run is also a slope.
unless u want to go OFFpiste then u are no longer on a slope
a slope is by definition prepared.
ur english noun things dont apply on french words piste = french
*****
we are.
piste = french thus if u want the correct explanation you got to use the french meaning behind that word.
Where are you skiing here?
Guthega mountain (Perisher blue)
+Dylan Garnett it says they are skiing in Austria though?
Ehrte is it???
st anton?
he must've been a pretty shit skier to have not been able to avoid her but I despise inexperienced skiers that clearly get in the way
i hate ski monitors they take all the pist slow as fuck and yell at you when his student are in blind spot of downhill
nathan marcheray because hes going t
hat fast on a begginer fucking hill. Dont be a douche bag and if your going on hills with begginers slow the fuck down
Yeah man nonsense
People get so mad at beginners...THAT USED TO BE EVERYONE
Ffs, i watched 4.5 min before something happend
+Eskil Solberg Because you failed to read the description.
+KingInky13 who tf Always read the description? You gotta agree, This could have been shorter
Eskil Solberg Sure, it could have, but I had happened to see in the description that the poster had pointed out the exact time to skip to to see just the crash, so the video was about 30 seconds for me. I could see being upset if they didn't point that out, but they did. Cheers.
That ski school is taking so much room up on the piste FairPlay the blokes out of control but still ski schools in my experience always cut across piste and don’t look at their surroundings and look in front of them
I went skiing with my school to Austria a few months ago and it was good nothing like this happened but where abouts in Austria was this I don't recognise it but it looks good for beginners like me who are necessarily that good
When u understand the instructar its much funnier
So many people here and other videos comparing a run to a highway. From now on, you're only allowed to pass on the left side and you must slow down when riding on the right side of a run. And use hand signals to indicate your turns. Seriously... we're skiing/snowboarding here, not commuting to work.
Who stops with a group of new skiers right in the middle of the slope? Instructor FAIL.
riding slower is so much more difficult than riding fast imo
Control first, then speed
this is what happens when amateurs are speeding and other amateurs are skiing in zig-zag on the whole slope. amateurs everywhere.
Sjuksköterska you said it. amateur hour on the slopes. more basic ass human being that don't contribute to the evolution of our species
Those beginners....always using the whole slope while going like a snail....
we all start from somewhere
+Eltern10 hot doggers thinking they own the slopes and care for no one but themselves.
+Eltern10 Congrats +Eltern10 your comment is the dumbest comment I have read today
+Eltern10
lol then go on a black track or if you are already good enough, you can maneuver around them...
+Matt..
Hey Matt, I grew up in Austria, have been skiing since I was 4 years old, so this shouldn't be an issue ;)
The freak out wasn't much but I enjoyed the rest of the video due the this mans commentary. Probably the lovely voice I've ever heard.
Was that the instructor that yelled "WHAT THE HELL?" I didn't exactly see the instructor go nuts. That was a pretty crazy collision though.
Comments on these videos always blow my mind. People blaming downhill skiers for being too slow or turning too wide. o_O
I've been skiing and snowboarding for 30+ years and I've never had a problem tapping the breaks and being patient when navigating around people who are learning. If you are such an awesome skier then it shouldn't be a problem and if you aren't such an awesome skier then maybe you should slow the hell down and ski in control until you get better.
video starts at 4:30
I wanted to whack a snowboarder for running into one of my students from behind not once but twice it happened to the same girl within the lesson hour, it wasn't the same snowboarder though but he certainly deserved a good whack, she was in pain but fortunately not injured.
Thats no ones fault yes that person was going fast but it was over a blind roller and the guy was already on the brakes before the collision, if anything the instructor should have foreseen that and kept the group tighter or had a nother person directing traffic in the rear
4:30 Slide into those girl's DMs like...
I love your videos man! you got my sub.
It really upsets me that winter SPORTS have become a circus for egomaniac douchebags. The ski driver who is responsible for the crash has to take others in account as well. Besides that the slope was easy enough to ride down the mountain safely and controllably.
That guy shoulda Pizza'd, He was straight out french frying!
The Instructor was rightfully pissed.
can u make more vids plz?
5:37 gone from my life forever.
Hit a lady once at Copper Mountain when I was in college.....was sure I was going to get sued. Tight, Icy run at the end of the day and in a hurry and boom, blew her up! Fortunately, she was just a little sore but no injuries. Take er easy out there.
I would have confiscated the guy's skis and made him walk down to pick them up at the main entrance.
+Matthew Ford he's a ski instructor not a police officer lol
+Matthew Ford
he can't do that, as long as there is no one injured, there is pretty much no law on austrian pistes. The only real law is that you may not escape if you hit someone, you can get punished for that.
There is not even a law against "drunk skiing" xD
+Matthew Ford Actually that would have made him learn his lesson.
+Matt.. There is no "special" law that is correct, but every other law applies, if you hurt someone and don't help them, that is illegal no matter if you are on a ski piste or wherever.
Matthew Ford no you wouldn't you fucking lussy
must say that looks like one beautiful ski resort wish we had something like that around here
I agree, here in western pa we have some nice resorts but not as beautiful as this one. One issue here in 2023 is the weather has been unusually warm and makes the snow conditions sluggish.
Okay, the guy seems really dumb, but is it mandatory to take THAT much space on the pist and to go THAT slow ? :/
It’s like going at 5km/h on the highway with a truck taking 2.5 out of the three ways..
You started out as an expert, eh? Feh.
woodledog Then just go on the side of the pist, no need to take the same space as an airplane.. You don’t need to do such big turns at this speed, even as a beginner.
Nassim Eddequiouaq beginners like it, gives them time to think
Nassim Eddequiouaq In short: Yes, it is necessary to go that slow and use that much space.
This instructor is going the exact speed necessary to teach parallel skiing properly and the speed is picked just so the people in the group can learn it properly. Higher speed would effect the position and therefor would defeat the purpose of practice. I understand it is difficult to understand this if you don't have any proper ski qualifications but unfortunately it's just the way it is.
I remember this place love the ski instructors great people care about there students 💯% recommendation
please add a train horn just before rogue skiier plows into the student, and add train crash sound during the hit and slide portion , thanks.
Common for out-of-control skiers who think they are good at skiing because they are fast. Often cussing out slower skiers who are "in their way". A good skier would never has caused this accident.
Yeah, the instructor ordered Your team to stop twice in the middle of a slope. He endangered the students, and now he's going nuts lol :P
thx for including the wipeout time
So many ignorant people giving the car taking up multiple lanes in the highway example, that’s very flawed.
This makes me wanna get out in the slopes just seeing this weather😍 but I hope they are ok
Completely agree.
