You have no idea just how much you have inspired so many by transforming old books and fabric scraps into works of art! Don’t let the “book police” rob you of your joy!
I have absolutely loved books since I was a kid. All books have a place in this world. Sometimes the place is as an altered book. I say if you own the book it is yours to use as you want and no one really has the right to judge. Love what you are doing to this one so far. Keep up the good work.
You go Girl. I have some of those same police after me when I rip one up. I am with you. Better to repurpose than to burn them or throw them in land fields which is what happens if we don’t repurpose them. Love this. E
Somebody was giving information on the difference between a junk journal and a repurposed book and this is a repurposed book it's not a junk journal and so I give her Kudos she knows our terminology and it's beautiful I'd like to know whether that's fabric on the front or if it's paper because it's beautiful
And I think we should be able to put anything we want in a repurposed book or Journal of any kind it's nobody's business and in there just for fun anyway
"Book Police"...great term!! As a serious book collector with a deep reverence of old, beautiful printed books... I also use old, battered, damaged books in art journaling and newer mass produced books as the basic working journal. A big difference in destroying a well preserved collector's piece vs. upcycling/recycling!! Love your videos.
Rachel, you are my favorite Glue Whisperer 🥰 I love watching your creativity. And, you've coined my 2021 words to live by; "Just move along. " I think I'll make it a t-shirt.
I smiled when you mentioned the "book police" because I was cutting up a discarded library book while watching you create. I love, love, love what you make. You inspire me. Thank you. 📖💌🕊️
Rachel, you are such an inspiration to me. The way you just apply things on a page is so cool. My problem is I over think my page and then I'm stuck. And bad mouthers can just go off to another universe. People like me need people like you to keep us motivated. Thanks Rachel. :)
Thank you for inspiring me to alter, recycle or repurpose books. I never understand why people watch and leave a negative comment when they are obviously not interested in what you are creating. Good luck with all your sorting, packing and down sizing. Been there and done that so know what is involved. 💞🤗🇨🇦💕
Rachel please do not pay those grudgy ( grumpy+ judge-y) people no mind! I love your creations and they have inspired me so much! And I miss it when you don’t post videos... 😌
- It's so hard to declutter, especially with sentimental objects. My Mum even to this day keeps reminding me that whatever I don't keep can go on and bless someone else instead. :) I do hope that it will be clear for you two which renovation plan will be best for you and that way you'll know what the timeline is. - Oh I love all the shout-outs to Gayle! It's actually from her channel that I came across yours I think! - There's something very soothing and therapeutic when crafting. Kinda feels like running off to a secret garden - a garden just for crafters - away from the "normal world". Our own little safe space where the brain can relax a bit and where weird isn't weird at all.
My parents always told me "If can't say something nice don't say anything" Wish all parents would teach their children that saying. The world would be a better place if everyone believed in that saying. Unless ask for their opinion! Big hug to you. Love your everything you do and are willing to share you art.
Don’t you just love those book police? They are the same as the show-us-the-back-of-your-stitching-police and the why do you have so many books police etc etc etc....your work is stunning Rachel, you inspire so many of us all the time. Hugs. 😊💐
I have loved books for as long as I can remember. It did take me holding my breath to gut a book, but I am so very glad I followed through. It Is giving life to a book that would otherwise have been destroyed. And the paper is incredible! Thank you, Rachel, for your tutorials and inspiration!
Hello Rachel! The pages are turning out fabulous, I could sit and listen to you rip papers all day! Looking forward to the rest of the process, I'm loving this. Maybe the book police should look into what the thrift stores does with books they don't want anymore, its sad they just throw them into the dumpster. Hope you are having a good day, take care!
You are correct about all the judgy people. Sometimes, I believe they are just miserable, unhappy people. The flaw lies within them. Keep giving new life to old books girl!
I buy hard backed books from a shop in the UK called Poundland with the purpose of either altering them or gutting them to use the covers for journals ....occasionally if they look good I read them first .💕😊
I found the perfect book to do this to. It was on the 50 c pile at the op shop and it was all about golf. 1967 book instructions on how to hold the clubs and swing the clubs by the look of it. Surprised it had made it this far and not been tossed. I am going to make mine a reference journal. To pop in one of all different things I have made. So I can flick through and remember and then make them again.
Just one word of friendly advice to all who love to repurpose books (as we all do). I do urge everyone to take two minutes to look up the value of the book, as is, before dismantling. Three times now I've been on the verge of breaking one down when something has told me to stop because they look valuable. Thank goodness I stopped. One was a French songbook with art deco drawings and real gold gilt on the front. Turns out if it's first edition it's worth nearly $600 (I paid a buck at a yard sale) but even "just" the later version is worth nearly $300. I've had this happen often enough that I just wanted to encourage everyone to look up the value and decide if it means more to you has a lovely journal or in its original state. A great resource is Abe's Books online. Thanks for all the inspiration Rachel. Love your work!
Ohhh - I’m loving this altered book Rachel!!! I love that you’re creating for fun!!! I think we do our best creating when it’s something we’re really enjoying!!! TFS!!! Hugs, Sharon 🌷💜
It never ceases to amaze me how people will spend their precious time watching something they don't agree with then spend more time posting negative comments. Loved these pages as always. Vicki
Love that you put comments in perspective. Book police can move along. Better repurposed than even recycled. In the process you provide us inspiration and a way of keeping ourselves sane during these difficult times. Hugs ❤️
This is all so beautiful. You did that book a favour by altering it. Some people don't know how to use their imagination. 💙. You're a real master of collage.
perfect answer to why you are using a "good" book to make a journal! I also have a few books that were going to the garbage and I will be making these as well. Repurposing is the way to go instead of landfill.
I haven’t been on Facebook for a month so I first seen your videos now and I have missed your videos. I LOVE to hear and watch and you are a big inspiration...Love what you said..” just keep on moving..” 🤣🤣🤣 I have been on a online drawing curse, my first one ever and I have been learning so much. 🙂👩🏻🎨 Thanks for sharing your ideas Xx Tina 👩🏻🎨
It’s great to see you really enjoying yourself and letting your creativity run freely! Fabulous job! I have several books all altered and ready to put the bases on and decorate them. I am very inspired! Last year I printed a lot of your pieces on tracing paper, I forgot about them until you just pulled yours out! I think I need to use them again! Thanks for the reminder! 🌸😊🌸
Good for You!!!!! You are re-purposing instead of throwing away! Forget those Nasty Nancies. Those who can't create, criticize. I bought 3 books of birds at an estate sale this past weekend which would have ended up in a landfill!!! LOVE YOU!!!!!
Hi Rach! I’m woefully behind in my video watching, but very excited to watch this series! I’d love to do one like this...maybe for my Margarete Miller challenge next year. Just love altered books! The book police visit me too when I do my altered books. You’re right, they need to move along to something that doesn’t offend their sensibilities. We give these “throw away” books a new purpose and life. That’s how I look at it. Love what you did on the pages! I’m going to throughly enjoy coming along on the journey with you! Love and hugs, dear friend! ❤️
There are so many negative, mean people out there. I am sometimes taken aback by the level on nastiness they enjoy sharing! So easy to hide beihnd a computer. Thank you for your kindness and support! Hugs rach
Loved watching this Rachel, it reminded me that I prepared a book last summer by tearing out pages and making pockets out of others, I really feel like finding it and decorating it now. What a brilliant idea for old books that would otherwise end up in landfill or incinerators. They are useful again and give great pleasure m even old documents and accounts have a use. Glad you deleted the message from the “Book Police” I would have had to tear them off a strip! What we do is recycle old books etc and they are used again, much more green and sensible if you ask me! Thankyou for sharing, take care and stay safe xxx
🤔 you said you didn’t have a plan for this book, but it does sound as if you have a vision. I appreciate your visionary and creative ideas ❤️. What a cool beginning for this book 😊.
Rachel, you make me laugh every time I watch😊 Clearly the book police don’t know your love of books. So glad to hear you got your hair done, it makes all the difference doesn’t it. I’m so excited that your going to be remodeling. I’m sure it will be amazing when it’s done
Love your comment to the book police. They have no creative soul. I love taking my books that nobody wants nor I use anymore ie recipe books. Although I am keeping a few because they are more historical and the photos are just toooooo gorgeous. 😁. But then I could always incorporate them within the artwork or journaling pages.
Rachael, thank you for this video in particular. I have watched you almost every day. Where I live in Ocean Grove, Victoria Australia, it is impossible to get old books. So I am now encouraged to get going, know how to reduce pages and just have to search for papers. From where I don’t know!! As I do slow stitching, I have had some great ideas from both you and Sarah. Ta. Love from the bottom of Australia x
The idea of preparing the base is so interesting! I want to do an altered book but I always procrastinate...maybe in this way is less intimidating...love your pages as usual! Thank you ❤
Lovely book art. As for the value of books...its only words and something i discovered is that there is no shame in printing ugly words. While i was altering a book recently certain swear words popped out of the dialog. Who wants a library full of modern swear words??? Just cover up the ugly words with pretty florals, painted paper, bits of fabric, and journal spots...so much more pleasant and in fact, a beautiful work of art. " turning "Trash to Treasure" Your work is always beautiful.❤
I love giving neglected books new life! I love books too! If you are not a journal maker then you can not understand the intention along with love for book making.
Love your inspiration. I too am a fan of Jessie chorley, so many things to create with paper and the right book. Looks like a Daphne's diary mag too! Thanks Rachel
Love this, Rachel. While we wait for the phone to ring to tell us our first grand child has been born, now overdue, I'm repurposing an old book to make a memory/scrap/photo book about his/her life. Been inspired. Thank you.
Love the way this is developing! I could watch you work in this all day 😀 Never mind the negative nellies.. I honestly believe there are people on here that just go around making nasty comments. Thank goodness the good ones outweigh the bad!
Rachel, my answer is why was that book discarded in the first place - it probably had its use by date and you have saved it for further use - otherwise it could have landed in the shredder. So good on you! Besides you give added value by teaching your viewers!
Ah the Book Police! Yep, I've encountered them too. A book lover all my life, I decided to do a little research when I started on the junk journal journey. As you said, literally millions go to landfill in the UK each year. I fail to see the difference between cutting up (sometimes very expensive) scrapbook paper or a book. It's all printed paper after all. Thank you for your wonderful and inspiring videos. xx
I just love watching u work! Going through a lot at home right now and it feels like I’m in your room visiting with you and not dealing with home life for an hr! Thanks for helping my day
Love how this book is coming along, can't wait to see the other videos. You are so inspirational just doing what pleases you which is what it's all about. Tahnkyou
Oooh, transparent butterfly!Didn’t think I’d do one but I’ve changed my mind. That looks fun. Watched a YT by Luise Heinzl. She did a master board collage to use on the backs of her printed tags. Her first master board. Someone suggested she cut it apart with the collage side down. (the way you did) You should hear her as she turns each one over and discovers the result. Excitement and delight in real time. It was really nice to watch . Like watching someone open a gift.😊 We’re in lockdown again. 17 cases total, none in hospital a month ago. 260 cases, 5 in hospital now. Give me strength.
How special is that piece of paper at 15:00? It's so fine and delicate. Just amazing to have lasted for so many years in such pristine condition. The way you have used it, brings the old and new together...it's an historical comparison. Thanks, Rachel
I’m following along with you, but chose a book without enough pages and have ended up with just 8 pages in the whole book😂🤷♀️🤦♀️ there’s going to be a lot of flip outs in mine to make up for it! Love the neutralish backgroundsx
Love this altered book!! You inspired me to make a similar altered book last year, when you shared your Jessie Chorley journal and made an altered book inspired by that journal. I really enjoyed the process and the altered book I made then and now you have inspired me to make another :) I really enjoy your creativity and your lovely personality. - thank you!! :)
I like the way you altered your book rather than the way I first did, I ended up with pages falling out vowing I would never do one again... buttttt, after watching this, I will give it another go, starting from the middle of the signatures, makes so much more sense... derrrr... lol... I am excited to see where you are going to go with this one... If you do sell this one.... I want first dibs on it please... Off to find a book to alter... Cheers for Sharing Lovely...
Yes! Amen to your response to the book police! We all admire you and your talent SO much!❤️
Thank you so much!

I recognize you I've seen you at your books up you do a good job too
I’m thoroughly enjoying this series. I’m surprised the book police are watching junk journal craft channels - we’re all book vandals🤣
Thank you so much!

Can't say anything any and all else have. Super job. Love the subtle look. It's so cool and inviting.
Thank you so much!
Love how this book is coming along, can't wait to see the other videos. You are so inspirational just doing what pleases you which is what it's all about. Tahnkyou
Thank you so much!
Like watching someone open a gift.😊
We’re in lockdown again. 17 cases total, none in hospital a month ago. 260 cases, 5 in hospital now. Give me strength.
I hope you are well! Thank you so much!

How special is that piece of paper at 15:00? It's so fine and delicate. Just amazing to have lasted for so many years in such pristine condition.
The way you have used it, brings the old and new together...it's an historical comparison.
Thanks, Rachel
Thank you so much!
I agree; keep it moving.... I love what you do🥰
Thank you so much!
I’m following along with you, but chose a book without enough pages and have ended up with just 8 pages in the whole book😂🤷♀️🤦♀️ there’s going to be a lot of flip outs in mine to make up for it! Love the neutralish backgroundsx
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much!
Your papers so awesome
Thank you so much!
Good for you, Rachel, for standing up to the book police! I have destroyed several books to make journals!
Thank you so much!
We are all book vandals...🤣 doing altered books is my favorite way to make a journal.
