    It's eye opening when you see just how much is involved in putting a train together. If we added in the loading of the grain cars - that would be a long video! Thanks for braving the cold and snow!

    Hi JT, those switch men earn their money, lots of shoveling involved to clear the switches. Thanks for posting, great video. Keep warm. Edward

    That was an impressively long train there, Jaw Tooth, CSX will be absolutely delighted with that one, just as we have been absolutely delighted with this excellent video. Thanks for the fantastic video and for braving the cold for us, it is well worth the trouble you go to.

    Thanks for being out in the cold. I live 28 miles north of Dallas and for about 13 hours we hit 0° f with a wind chill of -18° f. You going out in the cold to encourage my day is very appreciated. Thanks, brother!

    A dispatcher friend who worked for SOO recalls the time he put a grain train in the siding as a blizzard was starting in ND. The crew reminded him for years about how much fun it is pulling out 5 cars at a time with snow packed around the discharge chutes. Glad to see you haven't hit those drifts.

  • @wtxrailfan

    That line looks like one near me; basically storage track. I think a lot of these short lines are surviving on storing rolling stock for the class 1 lines.

    • @pulaski1
      @pulaski1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you seen the East Terminal Railway channel? th-cam.com/channels/ZDPxlyQo-gRMKJJxDIM7BQ.html
      They recently (late 2020) bought some sort of previously abandoned short line. I don't know that they have ever said _how_ short, but AFAIK they have only ever shown about 1,000 ft of track, so I suspect their short track may be little more the some sidings - I think they have two switches so perhaps as few as three lines total. Anyway their stated business model is to use the tracks for storage in "phase 1", then get to repairs of the cars in phase 2, and I think that is all they've ever said. They would have to get lucky with someone on land adjoining their track ever wanting to get _actual_ railroad service, and that has to be rather unlikely.

    Thanks for enduring the cold for the video. For such weather, consider cutting the fingertips off gloves as others have suggested or get some photographer's with fingertips that can be opened or closed. Also consider a tripod for cold long shots. You can't move as much but you can rest your hands and try to keep them thawed. 73.

    11:15 "You can't really wear gloves while you're doing this."
    I find that "glittens" are really good for photography. Stupid name but they're basically a fingerless glove with a mitten-like pocket that you can either cover your fingers with or fold it back out of the way. When I use my camera in the snow, I find I can just poke a couple of fingertips out of the mitten and everything else stays warm. Bet that'd wrk with a phone, too. You can also get gloves with conductive pads on the fingertips that are supposed to work touch screens, but the one pair of those I had never really worked.

    Couple of observations here. First, with the shot of the three diesels in the snow, at 3:50, my mind went straight to the opening scenes of RUNAWAY TRAIN. I was half expecting to see the engineer have a heart attack and fall off the engine.
    Secondly, when you panned over the bike path at 6:10, something about the yellow sign peaked my curiosity. Couldn't quite read it from your video, so I went to Google Earth. On Street View, could read it just fine: BLAST AREA - STAY ON PATH! There was a similar sign at the next road, over 2 miles away. Couldn't see anything by the path but farm fields, so I must ask the question: Are they growing that super hard corn that requires dynamite to harvest it?
    (Still love your videos!)

    i dont know whats crazier, trains being operated in the snow, despite being well built, or the fact that there is snow as far south as Texas, also colder than Alaska in some parts of Texas as of my comment. God Bless Texans right now
