  • UVB bulbs that use mercury will be banned soon. That includes t5, t8 and coil UVB bulbs! Where does that leave reptile keeping? Well UVB LED is right around the corner!

      The “Special Purpose Products” have been removed from legislation. That’s why 50+ trade associations and herp groups in Europe have signed the open letter to the EU Commission to request exception.
      However, currently no exception exists.
      Regardless of whether animals get exception, Sylvania has closed its factory and Narva will be closing in a few years. So going forward all fluorescent lamps must be manufactured elsewhere. This will probably mean being poorly made to a lower standard.
      This essentially makes any new ventures or product lines into fluorescent lighting/fixtures a bit of a silly move. Even if the ban is lifted.
      UVB LED is not yet here. But it needs more R&D than it’s currently getting.
      I often draw the comparison to when Apple removed the headphone jack from the iPhone. People thought it was an awful idea. Nowadays it’s surprising if a phone DOES have a headphone jack. It was shocking at first but the consumers had to be TOLD what was best for them. Without their hands being forced, we’d still be living in the Stone Age.

    Hey Liam, this is great info. I am across the pond but I am sure clowns in the government are working on similar bans. Hopefully they will allow some exemptions for animal products but honestly who knows. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this and for the support of my channel. That is just great! We just spent a ton of money upgrading husbandry. Lot went into trying to improve quality of life so my animals can thrive. That's going to suck if I can't get it anymore. My animals are enjoying the UVB lamps. Hopefully they come out with something that is not going to be banned. I can't really afford to reinvest in all new kits. If the new bulbs don't fit the fixtures I already have, they'll probably just not get UVB.

    Isn't it still the case that whatever LED technology can only emit one wavelength per diode. Meaning that it is far more accurate, but unless you have a LOT of LEDs that cover every single desired wavelength, you cannot really cover a full array of wavelength(s). This is rather easy with plant lights as they don't have eyes, but I'm afraid it will be expensive for our kind of purpose. Sadly enough, in the Netherlands, it are the same parties that, so called, come up for animal rights, that are also banning the tech that keep our animals healthy. I am all for change but I don't like to throw shoes away before buying new ones

  • @andyevans8585
    @andyevans8585 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To my knowledge the ban doesn't effect anything built, marketed or sold for the care of animals and therefore shouldn't impact the reptile keeping community. However if this is not the case can you share where it says this in the legislation?

    If it’s not LED UvB why is Arcadia making such a big deal. I couldn’t think of anything bigger and more innovative and game changing than LED UVB right now. So if it’s not I will be extremely disappointed.

    • @inopes3628
      @inopes3628 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sadly, LEDs are not yet there, as a technology, to be a source of UVB for reptile needs.
      While „possible”, and diodes with the specs on paper exist, and are incorporated in some marine products - they aren’t yet a viable option for reptile husbandry.
      I know of a few professional projects, spanning over several years now, involving prototyped, various iterations of such product - and there are huge problems with the reliability, and real, in-use lifespan of the available components (regardless of the price).
      So if someone will launch such product, I for sure will be very happy, but personally also wary of it’s reliability, and if it was properly tested, instead of rushed because of market opportunity, and based purely on the expected component specs.

    • @ChiefSweetsUniverse
      @ChiefSweetsUniverse 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@inopes3628 that’s exactly how I feel about it as well. Since the ones on the market right now aren’t reliable making such a big deal like Arcadia has been doing seems like they have cracked the code by the show they are putting on
