Jane and Me: Caroline Knight, Jane Austen's Fifth Great Niece

- Chawton House is many things to many people - to Caroline it will always be home. As a direct descendant of Jane’s brother, Edward Knight, Caroline grew up at Chawton House while it was still her family’s private home. Caroline’s early life was filled with the delights of living in a sixteenth-century English manor, the good cheer of family gatherings and centuries-old Christmas traditions in the Great Hall, the beauty of a country life, and the joys of helping her Granny bake cakes and serve Jane Austen devotees in the Chawton House tea room. When she was seventeen, Caroline and her family left the home her family had lived in for centuries, following the death of her grandfather, Edward Knight III. In this talk Caroline will share some of her most precious memories of her childhood at Chawton House and the writing of Jane & Me: My Austen Heritage over 25 years later.

Caroline Knight
Caroline Jane Knight is Jane Austen’s fifth great niece and among the last of the Austen family descendants to live at Chawton House. Caroline has had a career in marketing which took her to Australia in 2008. Caroline was a finalist in the Telstra Businesswoman of the Year Awards in 2012 and the same year was made an honorary life fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. Caroline is founder and chair of the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation and owner of The Greyfriar Group, a marketing and events business. In 2017 Caroline published her memoir Jane & Me: My Austen Heritage about her childhood at Chawton House, available at the Chawton House online shop: chawtonhouse.org/shop/books/j....

I bought "Jane & Me" when the book first came out and enjoyed it very much. So nice to see the author in this chat. Seeing her and listening to her talk reinforces what I felt after reading the book. Caroline's writing ability, strength, individuality and spunk (especially evident in the book) remind me so much of her famous ancestor. It's lovely to see family traits handed down through generations.

So fun to see Caroline Jane Knight speaking about her early life at Chawton! I heard about her book in 2017 and promptly requested it for a Christmas present. I read it right away and was so excited to hear of the details of her life, the history of the house, as she told it, and her perspective on Jane Austen, her ancestor. I hope to see her someday in the UK (or maybe when she is in the US). I also hope she continues to support the collective effort to keep Chawton House as a cherished historic site.
She even resembles the drawing made of Jane Austen :)

What a wonderful experience - to listen to your presentation and see the joy on your face as you reflected on your childhood at Chawton House. My daughter and I visited the area after taking a train from London and walking what felt like miles to get to Jane's cottage and then hitching a ride to Chawton House. This is a lovely preface to the book you wrote and I am very much looking forward to reading it. I wrote an article on how religion is displaced in Jane Austen’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’ (Meta) and am currently conducting research on the importance of literature in language learning with reference to her work. As a learner of English, I read all of Jane Austen novels avidly, and can claim to have developed my voice in English through hers. Think I first visited the cottage in the mid-80s but don't think I found my way to Chawton House; not sure I realised it was open - or that it had a tea-room!

I'm listening to "Jane Austen & Me" in audio book format and can't understand the narrator when she refers to the nickname given the grandfather. Could someone please tell me what did the author call her grandfather Knight?
There are sooo many relatives of Jane austen by her siblings children and their children and their children.. i guess they all not know all of them ..or?
So, Knight is why Jane called her hero in Emma Mr Knightly to honour your Knight family. Is this correct, ma'am, please? Kind regards from Elizabeth in Yorkshire😊
