I had a knock coming from what sounded like the oil pan, after a ton of research and a conversation with an engineering buddy I narrowed it down to low oil pressure. I just fixed this on my 2006 F 150 5.4 3V It is low oil pressure. There is a chamber on cylinder 1 and 5 that fills with oil to supply your right and left side tensioner with the oil pressure it needs to keep the slack out of the timing chains. I replaced my oil pump with a melling 360 HV oil pump. I have 146,000 on it and just went ahead and replaced the timing chains, guides, tensioners and VCT solenoids. The knock is gone. If it has been running with the knock awhile you may have to clean out the supply hole behind the tensioners. Because of the low oil pressure the chamber cant fill and your tensioners will have to rely on the springs inside them to keep the chain taught, but they will wear out faster. The springs are a back up if oil pressure drops. So the chambers that are now hollow have no oil to dampen the combustion and it resonates from everywhere and sounds like a rod knock or bearing. It sounds like its coming from the oil pan but the cylinders act as a speaker and sounds louder at the oil pan due to the thinner metal of the oil pan.

That's on the 3v engine buddy. If you clearly read the description he has a 2v engine. They never had problems with oil pumps. It's a 2v, it dosnt need extra oil pressure to run cam phasers and vcts....

Welcome to the 5.4 2 valve. Bought mine new in 02. Been doing it for 100 thousand miles. Just for laughs, I cut the oil filter open and found nothing. Do however check the tightness on of your plugs. Check for lean conditions. (Bad injector or vacuum leak). That causes a slapping sound on the piston.

It is your Catalytic convertor. There is feedback from the exhaust. There is a TSB for it. Ford says do not replace the convertor but there is a kit to wrap it with sound dampening material. I used a mechanics stethoscope to search for the knock and at the header the sound is distant and as you go towards the cat it gets louder and louder. At the cat it almost blows your ear out. And gets quieter going towards the back of the truck. Mine is the passenger cat and the drivers side is nice and quiet.

mine goes away under load, determined it is probably a wrist pin knock mine sounds like it resonates through the left side exhaust manifold not through the oil pan hence the wrist pin conclusion. the wrist pins tend to get loose on these engines. Hi all, f250 2001 5.4 2v 145k miles exactly same noise started approx 110k. I blew a spark plug had it fixed and all new spark plugs, still had noise. Did some work on the truck which i had to jack up the front end. Started the engine and the noise disappeared 10-15 secs. I thought oil starvation and ended up putting about an extra 1 1/4qt oil and noise disappears now on level ground. Also used stethoscope and although the sound can be strongly while listening at passenger wheel arch the sound is from the silver metal tube that runs front to back above the spark plugs, but not the rocket cover!! I am confused, comments anyone? CC Please.

My 02 F150 with 5.4 2V does the same thing, only it has light glitter in motor oil so I’m guessing it’s a lifter. From what I know these old Fords have a “cabover design” where the engine’s pretty deep into the firewall which makes working on it a pain in the ass. I’ll go about inspecting under the valve covers during the winter time, since it’s Africa hot 🥵 out here right now lol

Nope still driving the truck. It is just a secondary vehicle. Truck has 145.000 miles. I bought the truck six years ago with 109,00 from original wonder. He told me it started making the noise at 20,000 mile but it was out of warranty. Still makes the noise to this day. Might be a wrist pin or just piston slap. No way it is a rod bearing. Did a Blackstone oil analysis and it came back perfect back in 2015. I have checked out the valvetrain and did a timing chain set last year. Nothing more I can do. They are reliable but it seems they always need something fixed as they age. Fortunately, parts are fairly cheap on these engines compared to GM & Toyota. And it seems like most work can be done by the owner but if not, most mechanics know their way around the F150 motors.
