  • the Northern Goshawk is one of the most striking species of raptors. Often called the ghost of the forest, the steel blue-grey feathers of the adults seem to disappear into the shadows.
This video shows some photos and slow motion video of a North American Northern Goshawk,

I saw my first yesterday in Northern PA old growth forest. I studied here 20 years ago in Penn State with the wildlife program and fell in love with Raptors. After moving back here last winter i finally drove back the firetower road yesterday very slowly in my classic jeep and looked to the left at this MASSIVE gray ghost on a pine branch. Unfortunately i stopped too close and it took off, but is was beautiful. Thanks for the video it helps me remember.

They really are ghosts, very illusive birds and very specialised for their environment, how they fly and hunt inbetween the branches, they also have a way of climbing up an down aorund a tree very quickly.

Where i live (Scotland UK) these birds are incredibly rare. I would truely love to see one in the wild but the chances of just coming across one is practically non existent. In the UK we have a lot of problems with game keepers either shooting birds of prey or poisoning them. I seen an RSPB vide the other day were there was a goshawk nest in a tree and it had failed to profuce any young for the past 4 seasons so the set up hidden camera’s around the bottom of the tree and sure enough two men appeared and picked up large bits of wood and started beating the bottom of the tree the nest was on. They came back a few days in a row and kept doing it until the birds deserted the nest. The RSPB climbed up and checked the nest and there was four cold eggs in the nest. The removed the eggs and opened them and three had more or less fully formed chicks in them. If we just assume those birds could have successfully reared two chicks to adult hood each of those four years thats EIGHT goshawks . If you take into consideration the birds each of those chicks could have produced each season that is a heavy blow to the conservation of these amazing raptors. This is the kind of thing we have to deal with in the UK. It’s heartbreaking.

Total bastards, I despise all gamekeepers, they don't have one brain cell between them just like their pheasants. I would like to beat them with sticks.
