These guys are my favorite modern death metal band easily. Technical and proggy, without losing sight of memorable songwriting and focus. I also really appreciate their lyrics. Thoughtful and they carry plenty of emotional or philosophical weight. I'd highly recommend this album (Idol), and the one before it (Anareta) for further listening to anyone interested.
One of their members handles the production, and also produces other bands from time to time. He achieves some of the best sound and range in the entire genre. It's a treat.
These guys really just have it all.

Oh. Just listen to the whole album. So good
Genuinely one of the best albums in the last 5 years, metal or not

Horrendous is probably my favorite band right now. "The Stranger" is a great song that's really worth experiencing. One of the guys is a teacher, worth noting.

i'm late to the party here but you prob won't be surprised to know that the bassist was primarily a free jazz musician before the band recruited him to play metal. their new album is great also!

Very happy these guys made it on this week! Of all the old-school DM bands out there right now, Horrendous is definitely my favorite. Their first two albums were much more traditional, straight-forward OSDM; but their last two albums have really started incorporating more progressive elements in terms of the complexity of the riffs and rhythms. Even in those elements they remind me a lot of Death in their combination of intricacy and catchiness with harsh vocals that are still intelligible. Idol is easily one of the best metal albums of the last 5 years, and Anareta before that was just as good. Loved hearing this in isolation too as I've only ever heard it in the context of the album so I can really appreciate the awesome riffs/rhythms in a fresher context. Makes me want to go listen to the rest of the album again, lol!

If you’re into funky bass in Death Metal check out Sun Eater by Job For A Cowboy! Some of the nastiest bass lines I’ve ever heard and the tone is incredible 🤘

All their albums (with the exception of the debut I guess) offer some of the best modern death metal you will find, great band to dive into :D

These guys played my venue on a Tuesday night with like 20 people in attendance. They gave those 20 people a hell of a show they will never forger. They have since blown up and probably will never play our venue again. Been a loyal fan ever since. Hope to see them on your channel again

this album was my first encounter with the band and it's quite the high note, i feel like this album is exactly what modern death metal should sound like production wise, every instrument is clear and that bass is just sublime, harshes took a bit of getting used to as they're somewhat different from the 'norm' but it adds some uniqueness to the package for sure, not the very top but a safe spot in my personal top list of 2018

Great reaction and analysis. Cool to see you really enjoying some of this stuff. Not that familiar with these guys. I heard the first album and thought it was quite good, bit never got around to checking out any of their other stuff. This track was great though. Will definitely be checking out more of them.

They have made very significant leaps since that first album. You're in for a good time.

Definitely make it a priority to check out Idol and Anareta. Two of my rare 9/10 metal albums from the last 5-7 years.

A shame that you didn't get to explore the other faces of death metal, especially, when you expressed a desire to get to know "traditional death metal" and it's vision, basically to make something as crushing and dark as possible.
To be frank, I don't think you explored much new territory this week. 3 of the songs rehashed dm styles you've heard before, that being tech death, prog death, and melodeath. And Bolt Thrower by the point of Those Once Loyal had a completely unique sound that strayed from trad death's vision
Now the Morbid Angel song you reacted to did have the vision, but not the execution.
There were so many ways old-school dm bands executed that vision, and when you have a vision this grand and with basically "no boundaries". I mean you can always go darker and darker. It's very inspiring as an artist to see how the legendary dm bands of the 90's achieved the common vision of DM.

I'm sure we'll have a Death Metal: Origins week eventually. That was a blast and was fairly popular when we did Origin weeks for Heavy and Black Metal

Think we desensitized Bryan. he just confirmed the existence of mellow-death lol

I do appreciate that these guys are basically doing a very similar thing to later-era Death just...way better, if you ask me, but I still really miss their more straightfoward death metal like on the demo and the first album. They were so damn good at that sound. Yet another awesome death metal band getting hung up on the siren song of prog (lookin' at you, Tribulation!).

great band. I have a question. Is that a M50x? I bought a ATH M50x and the bass is annoying. do you use an amp. if yes, what amp?

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup, these are the M50x. I use an audio interface as a DAC/Amp -- it's the behringer UMC202HD. I also use an EQ setting that is based on the Harmon Target Curve, though I bumped the bass up just a tad so I can hear it for the analyses. I have a terrible time hearing low frequencies but I hate bass heavy EQ-ing so finding that sweet spot was tough.

My favorite current death metal band. They are the perfect evolution of progressive death metal.
