  • Passaggio a Livello 1+228, Linea Udine-P.M.
    Inquadratura lato Viale Trieste.

OMG! I love this crossing SO MUCH! Back in my home country, Argentina, we have those front-and-rear-in-one crossing lights and I love them with a passion! Although ours are from the General Railway Signal Company, and a little more "stylized" than those, but nonetheless they perform similary, and I am absolutely in love with them.
I would travel to Italy just to see this crossing.
Thank you SO MUCH for these videos. You made me so happy with them! I hope we can stay in touch and be friends, since we both share the same passion :)

Hey Why no Crossbucks? AKA the X sign
What does the sign say under the lights?

In Italy Automatic Level Crossings (In italian P.L.=Passaggio a Livello) works slightly different than in other countries, while still being constructed by Westinghouse.
Crossbucks are used without anything written on it (with a slightly different form and named St. Andrew's crosses) ONLY when there are no street barriers to protect the crossing (lights and bells might be present, depending on the importance of the street)
When street barriers are present we have 2 types of protection: full barrier protection and half-barrier protection (this case). In case of half barrier you have what you see in the video: 2 bi-frontal or 4 mono-frontal lights flashing in couples, a bell, an electric manouvring device and a half barrier with 2 small lights on it.
Under the lights there is a sign stating STOP WITH RED SIGNALS ON (=STOP CON SEGNALE ROSSO) an optionally, when there are 2 tracks, another sign that says "2 TRACKS" (=2 BINARI)
The little yellow sign under the big white sign should NOT be present on half-barrier level crossings but this is an exception because it placed on high traffic street and in Italy many people because they are in a hurry sometimes ignore lights and bells and cross it with the train coming (often resulting in the train killing the crosser).
The yellow sign is present on full-barrier manouvring devices (basically stating that the Level Crossing has mechanical pieces moving so you have not to touch or stand on the device) which are composed of the device itself, a bell onto a pole with a three tip Cathrine wheel on it (for deaf people to be warned about crossing closure) and a single red light of the same type mounted on the half-barrier devices. (mono and bi-frontal depending on weather the sound levels of the bell have been lowered or not, this again depending on how many people is living in the proximity of it.
In recent years a new type of level crossing device has been developed which is a zero-maintenance one.
The device form is similar, but the bell is internal (no bell-pole) and the entire manouvre is oleodinamic, with an oil-moved piston simply pushing and pulling the barrier down and up.
The disadvantage of this unit is that, because of NIMBY syndrome (AKA Not in my backyard) in Italy many people living in front of the level crossings are complaining that they can't sleep because of the loud noise of the bell (I wonder what should someone who lives in front of an airport say about and, apart from this, the bell isn't that loud as they complaining about) so the new one is specifically designed to be way less "disturbing" than the previous one (the fact that the bell is INSIDE the device shaft contributes to attenuate the sound).
This is indeed a problem and is a substantial hazard to the life of someone crossing with a car, because if you have the radio turned on (and when I say ON, I certainly don't mean like in a disco-club, normal plain volume is sufficient) just a small ammount of music is sufficient enough to cover the bell sound, resulting in a potential accident with the car trapped inside the level crossing.
There are some experiments that use a new electronic bell to be mounted onto the red light pole: because of it's nature (it isn't a "real bell", just a loudspeaker that plays the sound of a pre-recorded bell) it can be turned on or off and the sound beeing lowered or highered depending on the period of the day the crossing is closing (attenuated at night/full sound during the day)
Anyway the new electronic bell is a bit crappy to hear...the sound isn't italian at all giving the impression of something that just doesn't fit and is there just to replace something isn't there anymore.
To conclude, but it is only my 2 cents, I don't have that big faith in electronic devices for something so expensive, small-time-between-fault-and-repair and long-life-needing like a railway system. A railway is not a computer network and the old electromechanic devices shown that they last sufficiently enough (we have some half-barrier level crossing installed in 1955 and still operative and working). The best electronic device definitely wont last that far.
