    • @AthenaMinerva03
      @AthenaMinerva03 4 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      lil toopy the entire third season was about stopping the Russians from opening the gate. So I would argue the third season focused on the gate and the fear of Russians gaining access to the upside down, not the upside down itself. The upside down is hardly mentioned, and the main villains, Billy and The Meatflayer, were already in the over world by the time the season started. Plus, the Hardly ever mention the upside down in the third season, the focus is more on the gate itself. So I personally feel like the upside down itself has been put on the back burner and has recently only been in the show to be a place for all of the monsters to come from, not necessarily the main problem, which I believe it should be. I personally would like to see a sort of investigation of the upside down, I am personally very curious of the up side down, but I’ll be satisfied if they visit it at least one more time.
      Edit: fixed a typo

    The main thing that bugs me about season 3 was how gratuitious El's leg wound was. Like it makes you physically uncomfortable watching them "operate" on her. I get that's entirely intentional, but given Stranger Things has generally been realistic with how it treats its characters as fragile human beings, the fact El could SURVIVE such a horrific "operation" on her leg and NOT bleed out felt unrealistic. She even rips the piece of the Mind Flayer out of her leg which should have realistically killed her from blood loss and trauma.
    That and in the next scene she's standing and walking unaided...Until the Billy chase scene happens. THEN suddenly she's unable to walk unaided. That and her powers disappearing wasn't explained.

    • @justanotherrandomaccount5920
      @justanotherrandomaccount5920 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Maybe her powers were all subconsciously directed towards healing her leg/preventing blood loss? Either they're still working on something to do with her leg (fighting off some sort of toxin from the Mind Flayer?), or they're simply suppressed by her emotions? Either way, I agree that it is unrealistic.

    • @plaflish

    • @dszk1990
      @dszk1990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      El should have died from blood loss anyway due to how heavily everybody relies on her to get things done. The other characters may do most of the investigating, but the investigation generally leads to some point where the solution is "have El do x", or they get in a situation where they need El to deus ex the fuck of them out of the monster's grasp. I think after some point, she uses her powers every single episode at least once.

    Strange, I disagree with popular opinion on this one.
    Stranger Things 1 was a 9/10 for me. It was the mystery, the drama, the characters, the horror.
    Stranger Things 2 was a 8/10. The Mind Flayer gave me goosebumps with him possessing Will, the drawings, the mystery of the tunnels. Every episode felt like there were more pieces added to the puzzle. I loved it.
    Stranger Things 3 was a 4/10. I felt no suspense trough the whole thing. Yes it was bonkers and really funny, had great moments, great new character developement and cinematography. But the whole plot makes no sense. Its illogical. The mystical aspects are gone. The horror. The investigation. Now its not normal believable humans going against unbelievably horrifying monsters anymore. Suddenly its fucking superheroes who know they are superheroes and act like fucking morons 99% of the time.
    They infiltrate some dangerous places for no reason at all, risking their lives, and somehow manage to conveniently stumble into the right situations to lazily keep the plot moving.
    Well, I didnt enjoy it too much, still had a fine time watching it, and now Im just hoping they will go back to things I liked from Seasons 1 and 2 for the upcoming Seasons.

      @randomfan276 I agree with the fan service thing so much!!! I think what made the first two seasons (especially season 1) so entertaining was that it was a new show acting on existing concepts. It worked because they tackled the high school drama and monster aspect in a very unique way, quite different from what we see in regular tv shows. Season 3 just felt like they had watered down the darkness of the show to make it more memeable(I guess). I really hope they come back to the level of season 1 in the next one/two seasons.

      yu said it. "it's falling into fanservice."

    • @randomfan276
      @randomfan276 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Ocean Blue No. Fanservice is deliberate 'fan-pleasing' moments added to the show in the hopes of becoming talking points or memes, even though they're gratuitous, add nothing to the storyline, or don't make sense with the characters.
      I love character stuff. No issues with that.
      Fanservice is not inherently bad. Endgame had tonnes of fanservice (eg that moment with Captain America in the final fight), but these moments were generally spaced out, not too drawn out and felt natural as part of the movie. They made sense with the characters and were consistent with previous MCU movies.
      The problem with ST is that there are so many moments in S3 that are clearly written directly in response to the internet's reaction in S2. Since the show has never really done that before they stick out like a sore thumb and completely took me out of the moment.
      Jusr look at the popular memes after S2:
      - Mum!Steve -- not mentioned at all in S2, suddenly front-and-centre and directly called out by Robin in S3.
      - Matchmaker!Murray - he set up Jonathan and Nancy and in S2 and it was funny. So now we're doing the exact same thing again but with Jopper...which is great and all, but they're two mature adults with a long history and no previous communication difficulty. It's a conpletely different situation to two awkward teenagers, and the whole scene felt farcical.
      - Erica. People liked her in S2 so she's back for more screen time and even sassier in S3. Even though she added absolutely nothing to the plot. If the vent was big enough to fit Dustin, nothing would change.
      -"Steve needs to win a fight!". And he does, which would be fine if it weren't for Dustin's extensive commentary basically quoting the.most common internet comments on this after S2.
      Etc etc. There's too much.

    • @randomfan276
      @randomfan276 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ocean Blue As I said, fanservice itself isn't bad. It just felt really forced and overdone to me this season. You're welcome to have a different opinion - clearly you're not alone in loving a lot of this stuff. It just didn't work for me.

    I think my biggest problem with the show and most forms of fiction in general is the fact that the stakes keep rising and the odds get worse and worse. In season 1 I appreciated the fact that it felt like if they could team up they could be successful, but ever since then the stakes keep rising and it becomes harder to feel like it is grounded. I think my favorite form of fiction the A Song of Ice and Fire books in part because the stakes are decreasing as time goes on.

    The characters becoming these cartoonish stereotypes of themselves seems kind of natural though. They all have been through a lot of trauma whether it is everyday human problems or fighting off monsters. The characters are trying to become more normal and they really start to ease up on the over the top behaviors when they start fighting monsters. I think the best way to end Stranger Things is if in season 4, they somehow blend the cartoonish people they've become into more realistic versions of themselves.

As a fan of horror I adored the first season and watched the whole thing in one day. As soon as the second came out I watched it nearly as fast, but then seeing what the third looked like, and knowing of what had happened in the second season that was sorta dumb I realized it's a completely different show. I didn't watch it, so what I based my opinions of was the aesthetic and feel of the show from what I've seen, but after hearing you sum it up a bit, I can confirm my suspicions were correct.

  • @jennasalzan1808

    Unfortunately, season 3 is my least favorite season. I did love the humor of it and the colorization but I had many issues and questions after watching it a couple times. First of all, how did the Russians find a “new” gate in Hawkins if it was sealed up at Hawkins lab after El closed it...? And in season 3, how are all these people (the flayed) going missing but no one talks about it? This is what I did like about the season: Murray’s character, Steve and Dustin’s growing relationship, El starting to normalize to teen culture, El and Max’s friendship, Alexei, the summer of ‘85 vibes, and a few more things. But honestly, I did not like this Russian plot at all. And I also did not like how glazed off Will’s character was. I understand that seasons 1&2 focused a lot on will but will went through SO MUCH trauma, it would’ve been refreshing and interesting to see how he deals with it because I’m damn sure that poor kid has got to have some sort of ptsd or fragile mindset. Same with Eleven. Even Nancy who lost barb and saw the horrors of the upside down. The actual realistic issues were not touched on which would’ve gave more depth and dimension to the characters. They touched a little bit on it with Joyce thinking back to bob and a little bit on will when he destroyed castle Byers (a very powerful scene btw). But idk. Everything felt too fast paced and sticky sweet if that makes sense. The mind flayer was too much for me I guess and I wish it still had that mysterious-no-one-knows-what-this-is kinda vibe. I do miss the conspiracy vibes and mysterious atmosphere of seasons 1&2 but I know if they continued that, if would’ve gotten old. The Russian plot is spicy and new I guess but maybe just the execution was poor. If they wanted to include Russians, maybe they could’ve introduced a Russian girl or boy who has powers and somehow ends up in Hawkins. Similar to an eleven situation except the Russians would have a reason to infiltrate Hawkins. I don’t know. Just a thought. SPOILER: hoppers death was really sad and the writers did a grey job on that and capturing that emotion but I just miss the realism of the show and how it felt “familiar but scary” as Murray says. Nothing was just realistic. Like the kids never being home or around their parents? Dustin, Steve, and robin cracking some weird Russian code? The mind flayer’s presence running through Hawkins without ANYONE noticing? Idk. I also would have liked to see Billy’s character developed more and hopefully Max’s trauma, as well as everyone else’s, will be touched up on. I don’t know. It definitely wasn’t my favorite season but it could be worse. I think the writers showcased Nancy’s position at the Hawkins post well, with her being a woman in the workplace in all. It brought a great deal of attention to that kind of atmosphere for working women back in those days. But also, Nancy and Jonathan low key annoyed me this season lol. Like Nancy from season one is my favorite. I just feel like she was flat this season because all she was doing was running a rampage about diseased rats and being so focused on trying to find out the next big thing. Idk probably just me. But it isn’t the worst season. I did enjoy it and I have watched it multiple times and I will watch it again. Hopefully season four though will tie this season together and make it seem great and less confusing and more clever. We’ll see though...

    For me the only problems with S3 is that they did Will/Noah really dirty and that Mike and Eleven’s whole relationship was a cliche mess.
    edit: i left this comment 3 years ago. i still stand by the things i said for the most part, but i think that it's important to note that mike's parents show little to no affection for one another over the course of the entire series. this obviously has its impact on his relationship with el. ofc, this isn't an excuse but it's an explanation. mixed with el's general emotional immaturity (which makes sense given what she's been through), their relationship spells DISASTER. if they were an irl couple id genuinely suggest that they take a good, long break and grow separately. i'd personally prefer for el to remain single, but that's probably just me.

    My main concern was the lack mystery and dullness the show had to offer in Season 1. In the first episode we see Russians trying to open up a portal to the Upside Down and Billy getting possessed. We spend the entire rest of the season watching characters try to solve mysteries that we already know while trying to resolve seemingly harmless conflict. Plus, I loved the realistic and late autumn vibe the first season had to offer. It really blended well with the mystery horror it had. Plus, the color palette used in this season was way to vibrant and cartoony like you said

    Season 1 was more suspenseful, grounded, and mysterious. A mechanic is secretly spying on your house? A kid's body was faked? That stuff was actually really intriguing and I couldn't stop watching.
    But season 3 is almost comical, the characters basically only have one trait that they express throughout the whole season. It was fun, but still, it's a complete downgrade. At least it wasn't game of thrones.

I mean, it tried like fuck but it _never_ once succeeded, at least not for me. I could literally hear the Duffers practically begging me on their knees to as much as flinch during the Aliens-ripping off lab shootout but I never did. Stranger Things has some of the worst jumpscares I've ever seen in film, you can see them from a mile away. Eleven was also being hunted by the demogorgons like everyone else, and honestly I'm not convinced Brenner would've allowed another experiment to escape just because she's expensive and useful. A decade long effort wasted? Sure. But at least there wouldn't be another special big brain angry child running around bending spoons and shit on her own free will, or potentially being taken by The Russians and being used against them. Mike found her and housed her, Mike was her second contact with another human being unrelated to the experiments (RIP Benny). Mike was more or less Eleven's will, Eleven's conscience, Eleven's reason to act, and her dictionary until she was able to at least somewhat develop her own. Eleven would've gone back with Brenner, thinking that the world was cruel and he was the only source of kindness she'd ever have, had she not met and been helped by Mike, Dustin, and Lucas. Rocky 1 felt like an honest, grounded story taking place in the real world.
      Rocky 4 is a wacky, over the top battle between two invincible supermen and also there's a talking robot.
      The thing that made season one so powerful was how real it felt. It took the threat of a monster coming from another dimension seriously and gave us a grounded world for that threat to interact with.

    I still love the show a huge amount, but I really could feel there was something different about it once I got into season 3. The thing that I noticed the most is that I was almost starting to dislike Eleven at parts, because of how much the show overused her. Thought to myself “None of the other characters seem capable or important now. What’s the point of them when Eleven can just do everything?” It annoyed me how every other characters seemed weak unless she was there, but that’s just my opinion.

    In Season 2, I'm pretty sure Billy's purpose was to challenge Steve's popularity and to serve as his foil. Both have roots as douchey jocks, but one was slowly moving beyond that characterization, while the other was doubling down on it. You could argue the effectiveness of this, but I'm pretty sure that's what the writers were going for and it mostly worked for me.

      That's what I thought as well, although they confused me a bit with their half assed attempt at fleshing his character out and humanizing him, for no reason. If he was simply a foil, they shouldn't have made the attempt to make the audience empathize with him through illustrating his past as an abused child merely lashing out. He was also far too cruel. Sociopathic even. That's not a "mean character who deep down is actually just dealing with childhood trauma" kind of character behavior. He was handled very poorly in season two, in my opinion.
