    Like Gary Sheffield, Albert Pujols has never struck out 100 times in a season. The most strikeouts Albert Pujols has suffered in a season was 93. He did that his rookie year in 2001 & again in 2017. Even though he’s on the downside of a Hall of Fame career, he still puts the ball in play when he’s at the plate. In 2019 at age 39, Albert Pujols hit 23 home runs and drove in 93 runs. On top of that, he struck out 68 times in 131 games.

      i dont even care about the strikeouts. i care about the fundamental changes happening to baseball like putting a man on second if its an extra inning game. purists already lost the designated hitter abomination argument, now you are putting men on scoring positions without earning it, the defensive shifts.... its degrading and making the game an abomination. i didnt mind the minor changes to speed up the game like limiting mound visits and making pitchers pitch at least 3 guys before changing, but some of these rule changes are attacking the foundational aspect of the game.

      since the 60's only George Brett in 81' and Barry Bonds in 2004, had seasons in which they hit more home runs than strikeouts. Pujols came close one year, hit 49hrs, struck out 51 times.

    • @petersonofleo11
      @petersonofleo11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Angels Pujols problem was never power or strikes his biggest problem was that he lost speed and he always fell victim to a grounded into a double play. If Pujols was on his prime with the Angels like he was with the Cardinals then Trout and Pujols would be easily a top 5 duo of all time with Ruth and Gehrig, Aaron and Matthews, and Mays and McCovey.

    • @mikeshoe74
      @mikeshoe74 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there's a lot of exciting players today, especially some of these young guys just breaking in. Star power isn't the problem. Robotic managers, analytics, and a GM trying to appease a small minority of population you'll never win over anyway, is.

    • @mikeshoe74
      @mikeshoe74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sinatra222 I disagree with you about Bo Jackson. Deion Sanders wasn't a good baseball player. Bo Jackson had a skill set even greater than Vlad Guerrero, and the only time Bo came close to a full season, he made the AS team and was top 10 in MVP ballot. He just got injured. He wasn't the same after missing the 92' season. However, look at his 3 years prior to that. He had a ton of power, ton of speed, great throwing arm, made plays in the OF some outfielders would never make. Yeah, he struck out a lot for he times, that aside, he was a beast in every other aspect of the game.

    • @sinatra222
      @sinatra222 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeshoe74 Bo was never nearly the hitter that Vlad Guerrero was, I don't think he ever had the potential to be. That is kind of an insult to Vlad, who hit .300 in 12 consecutive seasons and never struck out 100 times in a season.
      Bo was a .250 hitter with an abysmal .309 OBP. Though he was certainly a freak athlete who made some legendary plays in the outfield and was entertaining to watch, the advanced metrics rate him as a below-average fielder overall (20 runs below average for his career). Of his eight seasons, he had positive fielding runs in one of them.
      Despite his blazing speed he wasn't a particularly great baserunner either, he was just ok (72% success rate on stolen base attempts, 1 baserunning run above average for his career).
      Deion was clearly the better baserunner and defensive player of the two, but he couldn't hit a lick, so Bo wins as the better player. But I'm standing by my comment that he wasn't a "great" player.

    Babe Ruth never struck out 100 times in a season. Granted, they only played 154 games back then, but the most he ever struck out was 93 times. He had over 100 walks in thirteen seasons, 130 walks or more in nine seasons. I checked Babe Ruth's strikeout rate for his entire career and compared it to Mike Trout. Ruth struck out 12.51 % of the time. (SO dived by PA) Currently Mike Trout's strikeout rate is 21.47%. In a little more than half as many plate appearances Mike Trout only has 115 less strikeouts than Ruth. (1330 vs Trout's 1215)
    Of course, even without the influence of sabermetrics the game is very different. Pitching staffs; particularly in the bullpen, are far deeper than in the 1920's, but I don't think that pitching depth by itself explains the increase in strikeouts in today's game. The one thing no one talked about is the suspicious increase in spin rate in a number of pitchers today. It looks like baseball has a new cheating scandal on its hands, they just don't want to say anything about it out loud. It reminds me of the time when people were starting to talk about steroids, but MLB was silent on the matter.

    The Shift is the problem. It means that groundballs get hit into a bunch of defenders, so to combat that they increase launch angles and try to hit it out of the park every at bat leading to a lot more strikeouts. Ban the Shift and players can hit groundballs through the infield. They won't always swing for the fences.

  • @benjamingutierrez3781
    @benjamingutierrez3781 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree, rules changes can fix it . Stop the shifts, no player can cross his base/position (shortstop can’t play 2B while the 2B is in shallow RF). That would get averages up and reward hitters for contact. Also, scores more runs. Shorten the season to 100 games. Just a thought but each game would mean more. DH is both leagues as well. But for me the most important thing is getting these wild shifts out. With no shifts more base runners, more runs. More hitting with runners on etc. forces action and makes situational hitting more values then a homer in some fashion. Look at the man on 2nd base to start an inning in extra inning games. Scoring jumps. Also the situational hitting is valued more in extras. I can keep going but I love this game and I played college baseball. I watch but it’s a feast or strikeout league and people are not watching as much.

    Don’t take credit away from pitchers, almost everyone is throwing 95+ with movement and wipeout sliders nowadays. It’s hard to hit that kind of pitching consistently.

      Pitchers can't last more than 5 innings today. Starters suck today. It's just that because of the Shift players have to try to hit it out of the park every at bat. HRs are up but so are strikeouts.

    Why does ESPN still cover baseball then if half the time people on the network are just bashing the sport constantly? And the same folks who constantly plead for baseball to make changes to improve the game are also the same ones COMPLAINING every time they make changes to the sport.

      Roids do not put the ball over center field. But if center field is 409 feet and you hit the ball 395 without juice, those pop ups on juice turn into homeruns.
