@@VR46Monster that's not the point. I should make thinner strings, they became wide and even if I put weight on it, it wouldn't sound better. after that it would be possible to tune it, but it is very fiddly.
@@Matthews_Tools actually i think youll find it will. some music boxes and a lot of high end oneshave small amounts of lead added to the comb then filed down. your music box sounds trash now but with a few little mods here and there youll get it sounding lush. i assume this was a proof of concept and not an painstaking hard crack at a music box. more of a "can it be done? only one way to find out."
I still like that music box, even though the notes aren't perfect. But, the song was good! I love your workshop! It's like a dream come truel! Also, have a great time with your music box! 😃❤

this is drum cylinder music box can you also try the disc based music box.....this is so cool to watch i tell you ....Switzerland and japan make excellent music boxes ....nice work....👍
That's neat! I'd like to someday make a cylinder (or whatever that part is called) for a music box for a specific song I like, although I certainly don't have access to those tools. I can't imagine a 3d printed cylinder would sound that good. Although, now that I think about it, I believe that disc music boxes might have been made out of non-metal materials. The problem with that is that the music boxes that play discs are probably expensive, unlike the cylinder ones, which would be easy to snag parts for. But the cool thing about disc music boxes is it's easier to change songs for.
Thanks! Yes really. they all have their advantages, I think it's better if you can change the cylinders and play other music on it. if you make such a music box, I recommend that you design it well, unfortunately I know in hindsight how many mistakes there are, but it was not bad for practice!
There's a type of music box you can buy that uses paper punch tape, which allows you to punch in whatever melodies you want. They cost around $15 to $50 online
@@Matthews_Tools you’re welcome and thanks. It’s hard to find good manual machine tools these days because so many are automated when certain things can’t be automated like certain details or design.
Hi! I really want to make a music box but have absolutely no access to any of these tools. Are there places I can go that will let me use them? And also, how did you learn to make a music box?
Hi! very good project worth starting! however, what you might have a problem with is the sound comb, in retrospect I wouldn't have done that either. Good question, unfortunately I can't answer that. I did this at my workplace when I was an intern.
I have a bunch of these machines, but they are never for wood. World using it for metal like you said destroy it? Or do you use told and machine made specifically for metal?
YOU are a machining genius! But you know less about wood than I do brain surgery! None of that wood was oak, It looked like pine to me. Oak grows slow has very small rings... that looked like pallet wood... cheap and fast growing pine.
@@Matthews_Tools For sure that may be the easier part after mechanism is done. I personaly would lieve it like this and use it as a cool halloween prop.
0:32 Hey I need to build something like this for school, can someone help me where I get so an paper for the melody to build the round thing? Thx for you help guys
you need to know what size cylinder you want to put the sheet music on. after that you have to multiply it by Pi and you get the extended plane of the cylinder. then you have to edit it proportionally, so that the length of the melody matches the length of your extended plane.
That was really cool. I was wondering if you would try to fix the tuning of the comb? Do you think it's possible to make one without the machines you have?
Thank you!👍 I think It's possible if the comb threads made separately and fix it to the correct place. It would take a long time and it may not sounds good. Unfortunately I don't have any experince of tuning comb but I think it's suitable for this project.
@@Matthews_Tools You can tune it with a needle file. Search the tooth which is nearest to it's correct tune, but below it, than carefully file the thicker part on the bottom side until it's in tune - the tone will get higher. Than you can tune the other teeth in the same way (if possible beginning withe the octave or the fifth of the first). If you have to lower a tone you can put a little spot of solder on the tooth's bottom side - and of course file it partly away if the tone is too low. If you have average musically ears it will not be a big problem.

I edited it out, I calculated the diameter of the cylinder, how long it is and I edited out the proportions of that length by hand with the help of the sheet music.
Too bad the box is completely out of tune. But I think if anyone wants to build such a music box for it's sound he will manage to tune the teeth properly. It's not that complicated. By the way: Pine wood is strong enough for the housing of the box. But you have to work with woodworking tools. The tools you use are not sharp enough and spin not fast enough for properly working with wood. So you scratch the wood instead of cutting it what leads to too much pressure on the material (and a poor finish, too).
I tried to tune it, I made it heavier, but unfortunately it didn't help much. in my opinion, the comb is too wide and less thick compared to its proportions, because of this it has less stiffness and you can mostly hear the deeper ranges. unfortunately, I do not work in a carpentry workshop, so there are no wood tools available. I used an aluminum tool, which is also sharp, and I spun it at the highest possible speed.
@@Matthews_Tools I think for a more in-depth understanding one would have to experiment and try different solutions. But this would cost a lot of time, and if you don't plan to specialize in making music boxes it wouldn't pay. The mechanics of the box are splendid, though. Regarding the wood: I understand and I didn't want to grumble. But working with metal and working with wood are two different worlds each with specialized tools. It's possible to achieve nice results (what you did) with the wrong tools, but sadly it will ever be a compromise.
