Back in 2016, Wendy told "Trunk Nation" that both a new version and the old version of "Stars" will be included on the reissue package. "Because the old version was only ever on, I think, vinyl and cassette; it was never on a DVD or on CD," she explained. "And we also have a lot of stuff that was behind the scenes that wasn't heard or seen, which is kind of fun. There's loads of photos we have. I think we have about a hundred signed posters by everyone, and a lot of those people are not alive now. But I just feel we wanna update it a little bit. So instead of just bringing the old stuff up as a reissue, let's update it with a bonus of some kind."

I loved Dokken back in the day, as well. However, "Back for the Attack" was the last album I truly enjoyed from them. I feel like after Back for the Attack, Dokken (the band) went into a slump. I did love Don Dokken's solo "Up from the Ashes" album though.

Dude, great work with the subtitles. I have loved this song since I was a 15 year old metal head back in the mid 80's. There will NEVER be another music decade as strong as the 80's metal era.
Thank you, sir! And I agree - metal from the 80s, whether it was fun hair metal, or thrash metal like Metallica or Anthrax... it was at its peak in the 80s, and such amazing music...
@@TawmisGreybeard out of curiosity, are there any metal greats from that time who are missing from the project that you would have loved to see involved in it? For me it would have been Ozzy and Jake E Lee. Bruce Dickinson on vocals would have been amazing as well. Nevertheless, it’s a classic and timeless song which never ever gets old. Rest In Peace RJD!
@@chewey3rd For me, personally, yes. I would have loved to have seen Criss Oliva (from Savatage) lend his guitar sound. He was, one of the most under appreciated guitarists ever, taken from us entirely soon by a drunk driver - who has seven offenses - and still barely managed to serve ANY time at all. We deserved more time to have Criss' music in our lives, and his unique sound would have lent such emotional strength to this powerful piece, I believe.
@@TawmisGreybeard I remember Savatage. I think I saw them live in Los Angeles in 84-85. Sirens is a great song which I always have in any of my metal playlists from the 80's. They got some big air time on the Headbangers ball MTV show back in the late 80's which was well deserved. Criss had an awesome voice. RIP.
@@chewey3rd "Sirens" is the song that got me into Savatage when I first heard it! And yeah "Hall of the Mountain King" got them on good rotation with Head Banger's Ball. (But Criss was the guitarist, his brother Jon, was the vocalist - until Zakk Stevens came in to take over for vocals with "Edge of Thorns").
Some missing guys I would've loved to have heard as participants would've been Bruce Dickinson, Paul Stanley, Eddie Van Halen, Paul Gilbert, John Sykes, Tony Iommi, Richie Blackmore, Alex Lifeson, Steve Morse, etc.

Agree - Paul Shortino's voice does stick out because it's also not the typical "higher pitch" vocals featured by many of the others who have singing parts in this. But yes, his vocals are great - really enjoyed him in Rough Cutt, the Quiet Riot album he did, and the King Kobra albums he did.

Is it your first time hearing it? If so, that's awesome! I love when people discover music YEARS later! And they can still appreciate and dig the music! Dave & Adrian played background harmony lines on the chorus. Lead singers always need more rest. Plus I read that Bruce was about to mentally crack up with that World Slavery Tour lasting so long.

I would have been happy to just hang out in the room with all of these people, myself. I sing this song all the time, but certainly could never match the caliber of musicians they already had. :D But yes, it's nice to dream.
This is amazing. The song is so much up their own ass ("we're stars", yeah, guys, we get it :p) and yet it's the most DIO song Dio ever did... with friends! For a cause! Ehh, I gotta say, "they don't make 'em like this no more"...
Yes the "We're Stars" does come off a bit self congratulatory..... however....Ronnie is talking about those who join us in giving makes "Us"....Stars....and that the musicians, fans that give and really anyone who gives then becomes "We" as in with us together ....not "hey everybody look at what we are"!

@@TawmisGreybeard Maybe he was the guy that supplied the cok - I mean, "enhancement." Kinda like, "Hey guys, can I be in your video? I can get ahold of a lot of..." - you get the idea
Watched the Hear N' Documentary again - and found out who he was. His name is Ken Kragan and he was with USA for Africa. Vivian, Jimmy and Dio went to see a fundrasing at KLOS (Radio in Los Angeles) and saw a lack of heavy metal representation. So that's how they saw/met Ken Kragan. So he was probably invited to the video and song since he was a part of the fund raising.
Curious - is the video being linked somewhere (Facebook, a site, etc)? Suddenly got a lot of traffic - and loving it! Raise the fist to the metal child.
Yeah. And Dio actually said to them: "Thank God. I was dreading for you coming in playing, like, a hundred notes per second over everyone else. I'm glad you did something musical." Great compliment from a heavy metal God! 🤘🤘
I didn't capture those that did the harmonies (I assume it was probably more than Murray and Smith who probably added to it) - and because I don't know everyone who may have potentially added to it is the only reason I didn't include them.

I love don dokken!!! His voice was the best metal ballad voice and unique!
I loved Dokken back in the day, as well. However, "Back for the Attack" was the last album I truly enjoyed from them. I feel like after Back for the Attack, Dokken (the band) went into a slump. I did love Don Dokken's solo "Up from the Ashes" album though.
Every time Malmsteen stands out such iconical sound
He definitely has a unique sound that helped him really stand out when metal was on the rise.
I forgot how incredible Shortino was. Need to find my Rough Cutt albums
He is also the (current?) vocalist for King Kobra and has done a few albums with them.
A vocalist & guitar players dream. Glad this came out back in the day. Surely inspired this 1980s teenager!
Heh - Even your name is closely inspired by someone from that era (Steve Harris from Iron Maiden). But yes, this was such a powerful song.

Thanks! I love this song - so glad to see it get so much attention! Glad I laid out vocalists, lyrics, and guitarists. I wish I could narrow down the exact parts of the guitarists (as to who is playing what) - but the transitions are so smooth, it's difficult to tell - so I just lumped all the guitarists together during the solo. :)

I like how Eric Bloom freaking NAILS the part Dio was struggling with xD
I feel like everyone nailed their parts.
The obvious are great but Paul Shortino nailed his vocals perfectly. Very underrated
Was he squeezing his throat to get the sound? Looked like he was choking himself.
