Hello again 6:33 Yes well, I'm still pretty certain that by "original negatives", they actually mean original negatives of completed episodes as opposed to using original raw materials to re-composite and re-edit the episodes together all over again like TNG. Otherwise, they may have done so much more with remastered effects.
I start to think they are using negatives from the syndication cuts. But still, I hate being lied to, when the executives say things implying that they are using what is coming out of the cameras, which is definitely not true.

All opticals would have been rephotographed during the original editing process in the 60s to create new negative to cut in along with the camera negative of non-effects shots for the finished product. They aren't lying and they aren't using syndication cuts. Everything that isn't an optical effect (and a dissolve is an optical effect even if there isn't a spaceship or something like that in it) is indeed camera neg.
4:34 the CGI team had to rotoscope every time a character crossed a screen/window/etc, whether they were replacing an in-camera backdrop like this, or a composited blue screen effect. The original raw bluescreen footage no longer exists for them to work with. In this case the CGI team was probably able to get more than halfway there by starting with a luminance key since they're over mostly black. 6:35 Quality drops before ALL opticals like dissolves by necessity. There was generation loss on the last shot prior, and the first shot after a dissolve as a result of the optical compositing process. Thanks for another fun video!

I'm saying that the remastered team had to rotoscope such scenes whether it was shot with blue screen or not, because all they had to work with were the finished episodes with the effects baked in, not original raw footage with blue screens in them. I agree that this scene as shot used a black backdrop with sequins or something on it.

Yes, it's the same painted backdrop. They changed it in "The Cage" but kept it here. A pity I didn't think earlier about including it
I hoped to see if the flatscreen tv the crew are watching the play on is exactly the same as the original. CotK was on today on Legend.
