  • Chris Broderick of Megadeth (ex Jag Panzer and Nevermore) playing a 5 octave two handed tapping arpeggio riff, one of three examples that was done for Guitar Worlds "Betcha can't play this" column. It wasn't used because it is performed on a seven string and they wanted it to appeal to all guitarists. The other two examples are in the October 2006 issue of Guitar World.

    for anyone wondering. 6-5-1 in e minor. look at the e minor scale. the 6th note is C, which happens to have a major tonality in this key. 5th note is B, which also has major tonality. and the first note is E, which of course is minor. what he does is arpeggiate really big forms of the Cmaj, Bmaj, and Emin chords. he really makes it sound alot more complicated than it is theoretically.

    Also this technique is used more often by accoustic players (Andy McKee and Jon Gomm come to mind), also by electric players like Buckethead or Stephan Joubert. Check them out.

Bottom line is your commenting on a guy who has made millions on the road for the best part of 33 years blasting out thousands of shows. I'd imagine if one got the chance to jam with him they'd accept that he's pretty fucking good!!

    YOU CAN PLAY THIS. My advice for other guitar players: start by playing it slowly. Like, WAY slower than Chris' slowed version. set your metronome to 80bpm and play one note per beat. Then, when you can do that, set the metronome to 90 bpm and play it a few times on here. Then set it to 100.... and so on. YOU CAN PLAY THIS, you just need to start very slow until you're comfortable with the movements, then you will eventually be able to play at any speed. I guarantee that Chris himself started playing this far more slowly than he does here.
    keep thrashing, motherfuckers:D

      +Owen Miller you don't have the tabs for this lick dumbass, how are you suppose to play this when you don't have the transcription, and tabbing this, would be very hard lol at thinking practice alone can make you play like these virtuosos, not gonna happen

    • @The_Muses_Acolyte
      @The_Muses_Acolyte 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Aizen It is on Songsterr.com under the name Betcha Can't Play This by Chris Broderick. And everyone comes from nothing, my friend. It just takes practice and the will to understand.

    • @The_Muses_Acolyte
      @The_Muses_Acolyte 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And it wouldnt be that difficult to tab, because he tells you the scales he uses, and its not that hard to see the notes he plays in this video.

    • @naegleriafowleri76
      @naegleriafowleri76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Owen Miller is not about practicing more and more, but practicing correctly, you can practice this slowly with a metronome all you want, and you may attain some speed, but sooner or later you will get stuck, mainly because your technique is not adequate, trying more times will only give the same failed result, you cannot bully your way to shred, is all about technique and also talent plays a huge role, if you think about what do you use when you play guitar? your coordination, brain, how fast your mind processes things, also your finger physiology plays a role too, there are muscles, nerves, tendons, bones and everyone's is different, some people naturally have strong muscles and tendons in the hand, which gives them an advantage, you can't have just a fast mind, or proper finger physiology, one cannot work without the other, the most difficult part of shred believe it or not, is not the right hand picking, that is actually fairly easy to correct, the most difficult part is the left hand, there is no shortcut around it, except years of training, proper practice to slowly build up strength, dexterity without fucking your selfup with tendonitis and carpal tunnel, some people develop speed so slowly despite proper practice, that it will take them decades to reach such level, while for others it comes easier, it is what it is, this can be observed in sports too, some people are just mentally and physiologically inclined, they have an advantage over others

    • @The_Muses_Acolyte
      @The_Muses_Acolyte 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aizen you are exactly right. That was what I actually said... When I gave my advice, I assumed playing it correctly was a given! Many people in the comments were intimidated by the speed and accuracy. Once you get the accuracy right (at a slow tempo) you can build speed on top of that, whilst retaining accuracy! What exactly have you added to what I said?

    • @codiewaldvogel3046
      @codiewaldvogel3046 11 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I'm sorry but no,.... Andy James is a great player. But if your referring to the cheat taps he does with his sweatband being better, your smoking crack. i like listening to andy but would never say hes better than chris, Andy doesn't even play with other musicians, and this guy sells out arenas with megadeth. Case closed. Im sorry but anyone who uses a sweatband to play clean is a chump. Just my humble opinion.

    • @RathOfficial
      @RathOfficial 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Codie Waldvogel Sorry man, but you have absolutely NO IDEA what you're talking about. There are no, "Cheap" taps in his music, matter of fact, the ONLY thing he uses his hairbands for, is for recording. He doesn't use it live, at all, just for the studio, or when he does EMG TV shows. Andy actually DOES play with other Musicians, he's played with Black Label Society, DREAM THEATER, he's actually be picked out and recognized by John Petrucci HIMSELF, to do an album with him. Matter of fact, the only reason why Broderick is in Megadeth is because of 2 reasons. 1. Being that Broderick is older than James, about 10 or 12 years older than him, and Mustaine really only hires people in his own age group, that's why he didn't let Jeff Loomis in Megadeth. 2. Andy James had some solo work done, but his popularity and career is really kicking off NOW. Also, don't bring selling arena's either, because the dude has been doing that with his band, Sacred Mother Tongue (I don't care for them much) Look, I like Broderick, he's technical, that's it. He's basically a robot, he can play anything, but have you heard what he produces? It's just boring ol' shredding, same key, same sweeps, he's what's known as a "Boring shredder" While Andy can play just as fast, just as technical, as Broderick, and make it more melodic, while heavier at the same time. Just remember this, while Chris is restrained to using his full potential (Dave wont let him use anything, like 7 strings or his tremolo bar) Andy James is gaining even more skill with John Petrucci right now. I know this is a long ass comment, but the boy is a prodigy, he's like the Jason Becker of this generation.

    • @RathOfficial
      @RathOfficial 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Codie Waldvogel Oh yeah, and Marty Friedman used hairbands in the studio as well, matter of fact, LOTS of musicians do that. From Van Halen, to Page, to anyone, you name it. It's a REALLY common thing. I highly doubt those people are "Chumps"

    • @cornemarais3965
      @cornemarais3965 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FusedPower agree with everything you just said, except the fact that its all the "same sweeps". even if that was true, the only reason this doesn't sound so great it because it has no rhythm guitars to back it up. Andy does. If this had another guitar even doing something simple as playing power chords over it, it would automatically sound a lot more melodic

    • @RathOfficial
      @RathOfficial 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just my 2 cents, this lick has no musical context, so yeah there's no "soul", but that's not the point of the video, it's a betcha can't play this vid, or 20 seconds of shredding with no melodic purpose.
    I doubt that most of the people commenting here though know anything about this "soul" they like to talk about, and about music overall anyway.
    Lastly this lick is made of arpeggios (or "broken chords", here base around Em), which are among the basics of music. So yes, this is still music.

However, if you are capable of reading and understanding what the title means, then you're an idiot, because you still posted that garbage nonsense--completely missing the whole point of this video. Do you realize that? I'm sure you do, but you're obviously such a hater of Chris(and probably technical players in general) that it didn't stop you from bagging on him and fanboying over Marty anyway(even though it's totally irrelevant). Why do people feel so insulted by technique? When they see some guy who has technique that is so damn developed like Chris, they get oh so defensive and attack him, as if the guy did something wrong; that's close-mindedness for you.

    He's using arpeggios to outline a C major (the 6 chord when in E minor, because C is the sixth note of the E minor Scale) then a B major ( the 5 chord, because B is the fifth to E minor,) then he outlines E minor ( the 1 chord, because E is the first note, or root note, o the E minor scale, which is the key that this lick is in.
