- A must watch if you are renting a car, bike, speedboat or anything in a foreign country. I had a terrible experience in Serbia when I rented a car at Belgrade Airport. Based on what happened, I can say the worst car agency at Belgrade airport is ‘AR Rent a Car’. Watch this video and you’ll come to know about the things you must know before renting a car anywhere in the world. How rental agencies try to trap their customers. So go through my experience to avoid such tourist scams while travelling.

All I have to say is this Serbia is not Western Europe. I have had a similar experience in Hungary. At the time of car delivery they don't check and hurry. And while collection of the car they check with microscopic eyes and take money from Western European residents or citizens for no reason. It is not just the agency you showed, I was duped by Hertz at Budapest Airport for a lame "polishable" scratch. Ideally they shouldn't be charging for "polishable" scratch.
My experience in EU (western EU) is this. They give the car, you take a video. Any scratch, you send them the pictures. That works.
Bhai when I was there in Budapest, they didn’t even allowed we three Indians in one of the restaurant, we visited 3 times and all times for different reasons we were denied, I even wrote a review about my experience, the restaurant name was “Gettó Gulyás”.

Honestly, he made this experience bad for himself. They were not being rude. You can't expect everyone will greet you with a smile and will do exactly what you think. its more like he was testing their patience, He handled it very poorly.

These are some of the smallest things which totally change our experience and the whole day feels bad. And many many car rental companies are known to be frauds in these kind of pre and post inspection.

I suggest sticking to known car agencies like avia budget hertz enterprise etc , my experience has always been good with them, they are more expensive compared to local agencies, but as a tourist, expect less hassles

I have spent lots of time outside India. When you say to him. "what if you scratch the car ".. mind me that must have hurt him just like you got hurt ... so my take is both sides are being rude....
Yeah but they started it and he replied back. If they have right and are worried about customer causing damage and scamming company then customer also has rights and can be worried about being scammed and have the right to protect themselves.
Actually he made this experience bad for himself. Honestly they were not being rude. You can't expect everyone will greet you with smile and will do exactly what you think. He handled it very poorly.

Agree with you, I drove in US, EU, SEA and Australia too..never faced anything like that..if you remain calm and don't push things around..most of car rentals are fine..agree you click pics before taking car, it sort all issues later, no need of filming, few people may get offended with this..this you learn only when you live outside India for considerable time..overall, this situation could've been handled better..

You seemed very paranoid from the outset. It was a simple matter of recording the condition of the vehicle, rather than making demands such a "you must stay with the car whilst I check etc".
I remember renting a bike in Pondicherry and my friend, unfortunately, had an accident and the rear-view mirror broke!
Then while returning the bike, the guy was so good with me, He just asked 'are you fine?' and did not take any money from me. This is what happens in India...
Salt and sugar mixed may look same but the mixture will surely taste different....and so do people behave differently in same situation ....no matter if we all are same...Happy for good ones....and God bless others.

I was at home this weekend with my parents .. saturday night, i decided to start a mountain trekker series . Started with Egypt and Italy is going on.. We enjoyed a lot and still enjoying.. Gonna spend many weekends like this in future.. Thanks so much ... Many times my parents said this man is extraordinary.. How easily he travels in unknown parts of the world.. Greetings from Boston...we all are sensitive when people are rude to us but conveniently we don't realize our act ...remember you were rude to him first by stating "what if you scratch it"....my rule of thumb is never be the first to be rude but once you underestimate my niceness then the gloves are off.

Rental guys pitch and speed of speech was not as anxious and rude as varuns May be just my feelings.

actually Varun is very sensitive related to money matters as you have seen him getting humiliated and embarrased all the time in order to save penies that is why he was doing that .Whenever a little money is at stake he will get out of control .Thats why whenever travel a strange land always to have a bigger heart

It's always better to be cautious. Especially when renting any expensive equipment. Almost 75% of the times, there some issue comes up when returning. I have used Zoomcar in India. And my experiences have been good with them.
My refund for petrol 1200rs is stuck at zoomcar from last 4months...
every 3-4 days I am writing emails & calls but didnt got the refund till now..
I had bad experience with zoom cars as well. But I always take video of car if engine makes funny sound then even record audio.
I had been given non working 3rd gear car... Imagine with a kid in the back I was sweating like a pig in tension in the middle of the road.

Exactly what I meant in my comment above. It's better to be cautious before you decide about renting expensive equipment. All businesses have their pluses a d minuses. I have had good experience with Zoomcar. I don't say that will be applicable to all.
I think he is the only TH-cam traveller who had so many Issues in every country I haven't seen many videos of other person fighting like him

I cannot tell about Serbia but in Western Europe if you will do like this most ppl will get pissed off.
You can take delivery, inspect in more detail before driving away and if you spot something just call them again.
But I can understand, its not same as its in western eupore. Just camera mat lagao uske saamne, ppl get irritated

Had the same experience in Switzerland...They gave a go-ahead and then later sent a huge bill without notifying...plus their customer representative were so laid back..we had to struggle and waste our one whole day before we could get car....these things happen..n make memories !!👍

I had charged 800/- in Jaislmer for a very small scratch. Everything except that was a very good experience about that company. Owner, Driver and all were very polite and helpful.
Still After 2-3 months when my friend goes to Jaislmer, I told him to go to that agency and check that car if it’s there.
Luckily that car was in garage on that day.
He found a white radium sticker on that scratch.
You won’t believe, My friend argued so loudly that they give my 800/- back to him😄
Never in their wildest dream they thought they will be caught 😂

Moreover Varun gave interview to some local channels and by now became a popular face there. So, this current video must not have gone unnoticed. Hope they take some action.

I've been a huge fan of your travels so far, and honestly we didn't expect this kind of paranoia from you. This entire situation could've been avoided and handled in a much better manner from your end.
This is the problem with almost all car rental agencies. Nobody will come to our rescue. Nobody will question them also. So the scam will continue forever. The best thing u did is taking a video of the car. Still they can make galata. Thank god ur saved.

This just showed another kind of example of tourist scams that we should be aware of if especially traveling solo. Hey, I've been to serbia, great country, great people. I am sorry you had a bad experience.
To be fair, I think "what if you scratch the car, while I am gone" is an offensive thing to say.
Anyone would be offended by this, that gentleman too got offended. Even in India this would enrage a person. Dignity and self respect is important for everyone, more so in European countries where most things, transactions are trust based and not verified.
Anyone who has been to Europe will relate.
Very well done !! These rental companies keep your credit card details and can later charge your card for damages. Its very important you check them while collecting and get them to confirm everything is okay while returning. One of frnd had to pay £600 for damage under the car which he no could have checked before collecting.

He said ‘it may happen in your country’ because aaapne usko bola ki ‘What if YOU Scratch it’. Agar aap ye kehte ki ‘What if someone else scratches it ‘ then the response would have been a bit different. AAP directly uspe chale gaye . Intention galat nahi thi aapki lekin ek chor/sajjan insaan jo aapko service provide kar raha ho, usiko aap accuse karoge directly to conversation acha nahi hoga.
That being said, it’s a very good video in terms of making people aware about how to inspect rental cars and be cautious with minute things!! Kudos to you.

Hey Varun - You were super aggressive from the start and were freaking out for no reason ... Remember no one is required to walk through and point the damages to you - he was being nice to you. If you feel like you need evidence, you go around and record it yourself so it comes handy. They deal with hundreds of people daily and give them the benefit of doubt. About the quip about the country, He just said maybe that's how it is done in India but here it's this way - nothing wrong with that to argue about.
Varun one info wud like to share with my experience in Germany ( Europe ) past five years ... only and only reliable taxi by us here is SIXTH , lil costly but no tension n extremely hidden cost ... belive me it’s the most trusted rental car in entire Europe

it is common in India also...once I booked a water scooter while returning the scooter they charged me for the damage

On my recent Dubai Trip I just didn't rent a Car cause there were soo many horrible experiences of companies keeping their deposit. Almost all companies had them on google maps. I was actually sad to see that.
Great thing was Dubai had a great Metro and Bus system. Didn't feel the need to rent a car at all.
After actually witnessing this on your channel I rather not goto to a country that has expensive transportation or horrible public transport cause for me renting a Car is out of the Question. Metro, Buses, Taxi, Uber, cycles and lastly walking... that's for me =).
In a single trip two bad experiences , one is your car agency and other Mr. Varun Khatri got robbed by some people in day light at a tourist place.

Always rent with US Car rental companies and buy car damage insurance full coverage
The robbing of the Indian with Serbians looking on is a form of discrimination/ racism . Serbians are not looked upon kindly after what they did to Bosnia . Just my two cents .
You tackled this very well, Kudos. In future try to take insurance with zero excess. Bit costly but peace of mind. And secondly try to rent from top players like Hertz, Enterprise, National, Avis. Thirdly, Pay through American Express card, if you need to raise dispute, Amex handles this very well.
This is how car rental works in Goa also 😑😑 dey charge u triple of the rental for a scratch in car.
My experience is quite opposite.
My experience of renting out car in Australia and Newzeland :
1. Always rent from reputed company, they will charge a bit more but always peace of mind.
2. Take pics , videos before you sign off.
3. Always get insurance, costs 20$ extra but definitely definitely worth it. Have first hand experience of an accident where car was written off.
4. The big companies thrive on good name, they never misbehave, helpful and polite to the core.
5. Always refuel before handing over, they charge premium rate for fuel if they have to refill.
At last he said everything is ok, that was epic 👍😻
Using simple words like please and sorry would go a long way internationally..

In the US and Canada, people pay collision damage waiver if they do not have own auto insurance . It is optional and not insurance and people who have insurance do not pay it. It is obviously what rental car companies want or they to try to harass in some way for not buying. The CDW is a way,however, to waive their rights to charge you for damage to a vehicle (yes, even if it is totaled but is subjective depending on car and value. You may be liable upto small amount too ) but this is only for damage to vehicle. You will have to get supplemental liability too (optional) for any third party claims that arise due to your fault which includes property damage and then of course personal medical insurance too for you and your passengers (optional).
Better late than being Sorry later is wise.🤝

This happens in India also.. If u rent a bike car here.. It's Better not to go for rented car.. Taxi is better option u may have to pay extra but tension free..

You handle the situation pretty good. I don't know what the hell was the guy's problem to show you the car during inspection in the first place and after you return the car they are inspecting the car with so much details and patience. Just to earn some money they have ruined the reputation in front of the world.
It is good to record the video beforehand. The both guys behaviour Is totally unacceptable.
I know in world there is good and bad people but u have stand for your own self. Your stand was right about not to drag the country name in between the conversation/fight.

I actually agree. The scratches were marked on the sheet. You should have checked the sheet against the car, thats it and just confirmed if he had missed. or all u had to do was take a video. He didnt have to walk with u to check again and he said he had other things to do which u didnt respect. This was AVIS which is a Global reputable car rental brand not and back yard car rental. You were trying to be oversmart which didnt go to well and thats why he said "that might happen in ur country but not here".

When he said “Do you know how to drive”, Now that was rude. Initially I thought Varun was also being unreasonable but after reading comments here and rethinking the whole scenario, I am convinced that it is customer’s (Varun’s) right to be satisfied completely before he accepts the car. The car representative was being pushy and that seemed a bit fishy. You tackled them well. East Europe can be tricky. in the US, anything smaller than a tennis ball is disregarded as a damage. Plus, you mark damages on the paper sheet then rental guy signed the paper.
It looks obviously clear that the first guy who handed the car to Varun was in a big hurry to hand over the car, probably thinking of scamming later while the car is returned, possibly pointing out some issues or scratches. So Varun was no way overreacting , he was truly being cautious and recording it completely. Thanks to him, he saved the day. It's very unfortunate incident to happen, but one needs to be careful renting a car be it India or abroad
