    I've got an Amsoil bypass for my Ram. I can use the bypass filter for 60,000 KMS, so I change it once a year. I spin the filter off and spin the new one back on.

    I started with a Frantz and Delo in 1963. They are a terrible design for servicing. When they started putting the ring in I started tossing them. All I use now is the Gulf Coasts Motor Guards the Australian Jackmaster Classic and a flat hezd Ford V8 canister filter converted to use a 4 1/2 inch roll of Scott 1000. John Frantz got his start in 1953 converting the canister filters to use toilet paper. Mine use a bigger roll and are not messy to change. The top loaders are a lot better. Actually the millian mile truck gets 3 gallons of new oil when the 3 gallon filter is .changed every 10.000 miles. 2 rolls of Bounty big roll paper towels.

    Here in Denton Tx the Wal Mart stores have the Great Value 1000 with the 1 1/2" core .

      The last Great Value had a larger core and smaller diameter roll. I recently bought a Austrailian Jackmaster Classic from Ebay. It has no center tube to put a spacerr on. It uses the TP core as a center tube. It has a larger core seal at the bottom to handle 1 1/2 inch and bigger cores. You just push in the TP and put on the lid. My sister wrecked the old Impala. My last 2 Frantzs went to a salvage somewhere in Dallas Tx. Also the Great Value is smaller. I was removing 30 rounds. Didnt remove any on the last one. It was a little tighter but thats how I like it. Frantz is an obsolete design. All I have now is the Motor Guards Gulf Coasts and the Jackmaster Classic. The more expensive Jackmaster Ultra looks suspiciously like the Triple R. Another good one. Jackmaster says you can use a tightly wound roll of TP but their elements are better.

      The Frantz is a terrinle design for using TP.. They have made a few changes but not any that was of any meaning. The top loaders left them behind. Too many ways to screw up. With the top loaders you push in the TP and put on the lid..Too many times people pull out the used TP and see there has been no filtering..The Frantz is the best known. For many years toilet paper stayed about the same. 2 ply was high quality single ply was crap.

      The Australian Jackmaster Classic is the best in tight spaces. The top is held on by a bolt . The Frantz has the over center clamp that is hard to operate in a tight place. Sometimes you can put a filter in a protective cover and put it in a low place. Thats how I did the Pontiac.Ive done a few old beetles. Havent done any diesels. Ive heard they are tight.

    Good job. Does anyone remember the AeroFrantz. They used high quality toilet paper and were FAA approved. Saw some on crop dusters about 50 years ago near Wichita ks. There was a Jones bus company in Wichita that had Frantz equipped school buses. I was at Mr Jones's house after he retired to raise Clydsdale horses. He had thank you letters from Frantz in frames hanging on the wall.he was a true believer in clean oil.

    One thing I noticed with the Scott 1000 in the single package it had a 1 1/2 core but the multi packs were more dense.

  • @ralphwood8818
    @ralphwood8818 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I recently got in a Australian Jackmaster Classic. It is the best in production now. They have about a 2 inch seal at the bottom for we TP users. There is no center tube to put a spacer on. They use the TP core as a center tube.You push the TP in and put on the lid. The same as the Gulf Coast Junior. The Frantz is obsolete. The only thing that fits the Frantz is the Frantz elements. You can get 30 dollar filter elements now that fit the Frantz. Havent sold the Frantz elements since the 80s. TP still fit in those days. The TP changed Frantz didnt.

    Hey Russell, I really appreciate your video on servicing the Frantz oil bypass filter. Are you still using the Frantz on your diesel truck? And, are you satisfied with its performance? I am considering getting one for my diesel pickup truck.

    Looks like the oil pressure made 2 channels between layers of the media that could get triple size when running. Thanks for the video, since I endup my conclusion and totally gave up of this Franz filter.

    • @Mprikiman
      @Mprikiman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Where are the "channels" you are referring to? You mean the 3-4 minor dents from the removal process on top of the toilet roll?

    • @ralphwood5114
      @ralphwood5114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There.are no channels in that element.

    • @1966cambo
      @1966cambo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is old but if you look at the element there is at least 1 hole or channel, not too hard to see. It’s actually pretty large but the element is oily everywhere so I am guessing it still worked?

    • @ralphwood8818

      The Frantz requires some common sense. Some manage to find the loosest wound paper in the store. For people that cant figure out how to use toilet paper use the Frantz elements. In 1963 almost all 2 ply paper fit. Single ply was loose wound crap. Also 1 1/2 was the standard size core. Frantz didnt bother to adapt to the newer paper.The top loaders can handle it.

    There seems to be 100's of these bypass installs on youtube. But very few results videos. The one or two results videos I've seen didn't seem to be very good. The oil stayed jet black. So until I see more positive results I'm voting no on this one. And I'm seeing a lot of install videos with comments turned off ?!?!?! Hmmmm ?!?!!?!?

    I was putting a Frantz on a truck back in the 60s. His brother drove up and told him he would have given him his. He said his oil is dirty and his lifters are noisy. He was asked when was the last time the filter was changed. He said change it. The guy I bought it from said it would last a lifetime. An Oldsmobile would let you know when the oil was dirty. The lifters would start rattling. Install a Frantz and the engine would quiet down. An oil change would do the same thing but only temporarily.

    Just discovered these type of filters and this didn’t answer my only question, do you leave the inner cardboard roll inside the toilet paper roll.

      The Frantz factory elements of 30 years ago had a very thick core. All of the toilet paper filters filter from the top down. Wouldnt seal good without the core. Dont know what they have now. I use toilet paper filters because they take toilet paper. Since 1963.

    • @ralphwood8818
      @ralphwood8818 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought the filters all needed a center tube like the Frantz.. The Australian Jackmaster Classic has no center tube. They use the toilet paper core as a center tube. They have a larger core seal at the bottom.. push the paper down against the seal and put on the lid.Similar to the other better designed top loaders.

    I was just at Wal-Mart. I bought a couple of Scott 1000 individually wrapped toilet paper. Denton Tx. I think it is 1 1/2 inch core.

    The easiest toilet paper filter to service is the Gulf Coast O 1 junior.. When Frantz went broke. Years ago the big Frantz dealer in Gulfport Mississippi had to come up with his own design to stay in business. He knew where to make the improvements. Since he was primarily a marine filter dealer he made a filter that wouldnt corrode around the ocean.the filter is a top loader made of glass filled nylon with stainless steel hardware. At least my old one is.like Frantz they have gone to the knob clamp. I like my old one with.the over center clamp. Google Gulf Coast filters.Not with them anymore. The owner chewed on my ass for using sandwich adapters. I dont take ass chewing. But they do have the best filters.

    There are over the road trunks that use the same system as the Frantz system. Bigger engines and bigger filters. Use paper towels.Over 1 million miles with no oil drains with the same engine parts. Google Gulf Coast Filters.

  • @ralphwood5114
    @ralphwood5114 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a rule of thumb any element that looks like toilet paper is a good filter. Spin oil filters are inferior. You need depth to clean oil.Some depth filters are as good as toilet paper but the elements cost as much as an oil change. I have used several. Brands since 63. They were all good. Frantz is one of the best. They were more impressive in the old days because engines were a lot dirtier. No oil doesn't break down paper. Don't go years without changing the TP. Acid will do a job on the paper. The full flow pleaded paper will go first.

  • @ralphwood8818
    @ralphwood8818 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are not a highly skilled toilet paper squeezer like me buy the Frantz elements. I have almost 60 years of experience.

  • @ralphwood5114
    @ralphwood5114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is always nice when air can enter the Frantz at shut down and allow the Frantz to drain. No mess.

  • @ralphwood5114
    @ralphwood5114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't need the ring. The ring is for people that use loosely wound paper and end up with wrinkles for the oil to bypass the paper. If you get a good seal at the bottom around the core You.don't need the sleeve. The Gulf Coast 01 Jr has a smaller tube and a better seal at the bottom. They don't need the sleeve that only makes them harder to change.

  • @ralphwood5114
    @ralphwood5114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One problem with selling these filters is someone that don't change their oil won't change the Frantz.Your customer needs to love his car like you do.

  • @ralphwood5114
    @ralphwood5114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Amsoil doesn't clean better than a Frantz. The original Amsoil might have come close but was too expensive.

  • @ralphwood5114
    @ralphwood5114 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    One problem is when you push the toilet paper in too far you don't get a good seal around the core. Especially if you are using the shorter Scott 1000. I would push it in just enough so that paper isn't pinched in the gasket.If you put the paper in snug like you did you.don't need the ring.. My first Frantz 55 years ago had no ring and it did fine. The base does the same as the ring.

  • @ralphwood8818
    @ralphwood8818 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do it a little different. I toss the snap ring. It isn't needed with high quality paper. I dont wipe out the oil. It lubricates the new element. The base does the same as the snap ring.with the shorter rolls I push the paper in just enough so that it dont pinch in the gasket. Hit the top down against the gasket and then put on the clamp. I started using the top loaders now and eliminated the hassle. All of the toilet paper filters clean oil It is not politically correct to say toilet paper. You.should say Frantz replacement elements.

      I have one on my 7.3. When I put it on, the oil was black. I drove for 10 minutes and the oil was golden. I drove it 26,000 miles without changing the oil, just changing the toilet paper and topping off the oil to "full". At the end of that 26,000 miles I had the oil lab tested. They test for wear metal that comes from from your engine and ends up in your oil, which is microscopic and too small to filter out, and tells you exactly the rate at which your engine is wearing. They said that my oil showed 1/8 the amount of wear that a stock 7.3 would show over the same miles. Science.

    • @ralphwood8818
      @ralphwood8818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used the filters for almost 60 years. They are very effective at cleaning oil. I dont know of any engine being destroyed by clean oil. I am using Motor Guards and Gulf Coast filters now. Started with a Frantz. It's the toilet paper that makes them superior. You can pay 30 bucks for an element as good as toilet paper.

    • @ralphwood8818
      @ralphwood8818 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally the oil in a diesel will be black. There is a very small amount of soot that causes no harm and is too small to be filtered out. It's like ink. I Like for my oil to be a shiny black in a diesel.
