Great tips. Note on polychromos white, ivory or anything off-white tone... it will perform better on sanded or Pastelmat paper. Pick and chose your material that goes well on the desired surface!
thank you Rachel. I bought the 36 set and then I bought open stock the color that I need, and finally I have all the 120 set, love my Polychromos pencils
This was quite interesting and very helpful if your buying in smaller lots to build your set. Sort of as an aside to this video I’d love to see a video about your favorite combinations of colors and your thought process of determining which colors to pair with each other. Do you have any rules of thumb that you follow when choosing your colors etc. I know you are tremendously busy with your recording schedule but I think this would be a wonderful video to have in our library. Thank you so much Rachel for all you do for the community especially new colorists.
Thank you for your kind words. I will have a think about that idea as at the moment nothing springs to mind lol! I will have to start making notes I think, as to the colours I use together as I think I do it automatically and without thought!
For botanical art polychromos have plenty of nice greens and pinks, plus I like ivory and cream for highlights, and dark indigo, dark sepia, payne's grey for dark shades. For an opaque white I prefer Caran d'ache Luminance or Derwent drawing white pencil.
I don't have any polychromos yet, but I've been looking at the available sets. The full 120 are cost-prohibitive at one time. I really appreciate this video! I think I must start with the 36 set because of price. Then I can fill in using your suggestions a few pencils every month until I have them all. I put my pencils in cases instead of using the tins because as you mentioned, they get dented and go a bit wonky over time. Also the various trays can be fiddly on the desk - harder to flip through and find the one I need.. I do tend to save my tins and trays to use as I'm coloring a page. I'll pull out the colors I need, put my combos together, and that wY if I don't finish a page at night, everything stays organized until I come back to work on that page. I find your videos very informative and down-to-earth. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the lovely comment. Sounds like you have a really good system for your colouring. I agree that although 120 pencils work out cheaper per pencil, it is just so expensive, especially if there end up being some colours you hardly use.
I use the white and Ivory to bend my colors polys . however I do agree I do need a decent white .Lovely video as nornal . Just brought the rest of polychomos today to compleate 120 colors xxxx Happy coloring xxxx
Hi Rachel, I really appreciate your knowledge of the Polychromos, and what goes with what, the difference between certain colors and how you use them, I totally agree with you. With your light hand and how you layer, I think you should be able to learn skin tones rather quickly. I haven’t left a comment in awhile but I do enjoy your videos. Thank you very much for sharing.
Thank you very much for the great video! It helped me a lot. ❤ I had a set of 36 and bought more pencils with your help. (There was a great promotion online for 1.55 Euros each) Now I have about 90 pencils, with all the colors I needed.🙂
Hi Rachel, I have just gotten into colouring and have been looking for good pencils. This video was super useful for a beginner like me. Thanks for sharing!
Yes! I was looking for this. I bought the thirty six set because of the box that was small for travel. I want to add a few and was wonderingwhich ones.
I would agree that it might be better value for money to buy all 120 and the colours available in the smaller are limited, as you point out. However, I would always recommend buying one pencil to try out, before buying a set, just to see if you like the feel of it.
Thanks so much for this very useful & informative video. It was perfect for me. I’m a beginner & am using your colouring videos to help me get going on my new hobby. I got a set of 60 Polychromos & then wished I’d gone for the full set but with the help in this video I’ve just ordered another 27 additional polys from Cult Pens (3 for 2 offer on at present) which will suffice as I’ve taken on board all you said about some colours being not essential as very similar. Thanks again. Dianne 😀
I am so pleased that it was useful and that you were able to take advantage of the Cult pens offer - it is a good one! I hope you enjoy your new pencils.
Hey Rachel. I love these. I will make note of your suggests. I have the little tin and I feel like I want a few more without purchaing the whole set. Thanks so much.
Yes like prisma pencils but they are very nice to use. Not sure If I told you I got the 150 set of prisma pencils during prime sales on Amazon. Really enjoy using them.😊
Thank you so much. I now have an entire page of notes. They are quite expensive here in the US, I started with the 36 set then started buying open stock which I have to order online. My first order I wound up with so many that were virtually the same, either to each other or to ones I already had, it was very disheartening. It was like I bought six pencils instead of a dozen when I actually started using them. My second dozen actually arrived yesterday and are still in the box and I hope I did better with those.. Coloring with Alena did a video last week on the topic as well and I picked some of her favorites that were quite different to what I had, including green gold and indanthrone blue (which are both favorite shades of mine in paint as well). Especially the way they work with their transparency and layering, I don't think I need them all.. I'm currently planning for stopping at 72...and now I can see which to considering choosing between. I did do exactly what you suggested and went with the 3 and 5 of each grey.. and I feel it works just fine. I do think the paynes grey is a lovely shadow color with that little touch of blue and I much prefer it to the indigo or black for that purpose... I will put the sepia on my next list of must buys.
Thank you so much for this! I have bought a few and was now thinking on how to add to my collection. I now ended up with 75 colors and my goal was 72. So you really helped me lots! Have an awesome day :)
The metallic colours are good in their newer versions. You have the 2003 pencils, which suck. But the 2021 metallic pencils are much, much, much better.
@@RachelHendersonColouring I have Polychromos pencils in 435 different colours, and these are not yet all different colours. Because the colours changed over time depending on the production year.
