Yo I really like that the actual footage is being show to us as you film it, I think that's key because we can see what angle and movements you're taking and what it looks like real time
Yes, this video shows an excellent contrast between effective an ineffective production. Follow your emotions, its far easier to feel the scene in the 2nd video.
I really like that you did this all using one simple camera and no accessories. This helps to illustrate the point that achieving good footage has more to do with composition (visual choices) and concept (what you are trying to SAY with your video). It’s not about equipment; it’s what you DO with the equipment, however simple it might be. Good job!
Way Out West Creatives Nicholas Ross Music yo would u be able to check out my recent film and lmk what you think? I’m looking for some feedback thank you! I’ll sub to you btw
I guess the takeaway is this for a lot of beginners: If you see cool things, go for it, go close, go around, frame it up, down, reversed, add movement, whatever. If you're not stimulated by the environment, GET STIMULATED. Pay attention! Even if an environment might seem bare at first, analyze it, film ALL OF IT. Wide, close up, tilt it, add movement. Just don't sit there and pan and think that's enough or you're not interested. Pay attention to your composition, make sure a frame is pretty and shoot. If it just looks ok, don't even be happy with it.

Jher and Soleil it’s actually super easy to shoot on the go. If you know what to look for you’ll be able to see the scene before it happens, you’ll also be able to manipulate movements as well.
Make them be the models and they’ll wait for you all the time. And if they have seen your work before (and if it’s good) they will ask you to be part of it.
I learned more in your 10 min video that I have in the last 2 years. I am going to take my well-intentioned but very average shorts and make them better now. You are amazing and thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge because it matters and really helps people. Thank you.

I've been trying to get into recording and editing, especially with all the extra time now, but a lot of videos make it feel so overwhelming. This one gave me the impression that it's actually doable and it gave me a lot of inspiration!
Great job man. Authentic way of presenting your tutorial. I love the “live stream” view box in the lower left, and your to-the-point delivery. Good work.
Sean I have to say, THHHAT was amazing bro !!! Very simple, but at the same time a few simple tips can TOTALLLLLY transform someones otherwise dull vacay video into something like it was out of a movie, like you said. I'm pretty creative, I did do a photography course in college, so I have a firm knowledge of exposure, framing etc. But I never tire of learning different ways of showing and shooting people and objects. I ACTUALLY do your palm tree style of shooting man WOOHOO !! One other thing most beginners do, and always get hung up on, is shen they shoot, they want to start and end the vid clip as if it's the finished product [ie no editing/cutting/splicing. Whereas, in many cases, that's the key to MAKING it look and have that "pro" feel. Loved this video and look forward to seeing more bro, CHEERS !!
Wow. I'm in awe. I love the fact that there's none of the expensive fancy equipment cause I cant afford those and I saw my mistakes in one videos. I love this so much, Thank you.
Nice explanation for those of us new to video and editing. I love how you show multiple techniques that can instantly increase the quality of a shot. Showing the actual in field process then showing the final cut was extremely helpful!
Very educational video. The film of you filming and describing what you were seeing really showed in the end pro version. Beaches are beautiful but I’d love to see more B roll ideas for videos that are not quite so cinematic? Thanks a bunch for sharing.
Ok so I'm such a newb. This was perfect and I could understand it on my level. I love how we could watch you actually get the shot, the way you moved, and the pip vid as well. It totally clicked and I'm so happy I watched this! 10 minutes well spent.
You have lessons with what I would do and what I should do. You show the gap and you close it. You gave examples and it was clear you planned the lesson with intent. I'm subscribing and watching all your videos. Keep it up.
Agreed on so many levels, very good demonstration! I have one thing to add though: What people should avoid isn’t pans, but aimless pans. Pans are used a lot in B-roll of more old school documentary stuff and if you combine slow pans with static tripod stuff, you have a completely different style that also works. It’s not what’s currently popular on TH-cam, but it does work in specific contexts.
Favorite tip from this series was "shooting with purpose", which gets to the entire point of having a shot sheet on paper or in your mind even when doing run & gun shooting. Thanks Sean.
This is a MAJOR game changer! I was attempting these type of shots not realizing it while also poorly executing. With your tips, I think I've found a gem for life
This was very informative for someone just starting. I really appreciated how you took us through the mindset of a beginner, showed us the result and then went on to show us the better way to take these shots. It was great to see the step by step movements that go into creating these scenes. Thank you!
I was even impressed by the beginner b rolls he made and was wondering if as a beginner I could even do those, then I saw his professional version and my mind is blown. after seeing this I hit the subscribe button immediately. As a small channel, I need these skills in my life.
This video is really great! Love how you showed the actual body movements to capturing interesting footage - which I found many similar videos don't (they just talk about it and show the final product). Would love more!
Actually the first real B-Roll tutorial I've seen here on TH-cam. Nice work. I agree to showing the footage you film as pic-in-pic. What most people get wrong about B-Roll: B-Roll is completely removeble footage without effecting the general clip/film in meaning! A lot of people misunderstand B-Roll and a lot of TH-camrs make poeple believe that B-Roll is about footage without talking poeple, that is wrong. Filming the same scene/subject from different angles is also not B-Roll, it's just different take. To get an idea: imagine John Wick without the scene of the dog being killed. That scene is absolutly essential despite no talking people. That scene is not B-Roll because it can not be replaced with some Russian kicking some plant or something. Hope that further helped to get an idea.
Ouch, this whole video was about my amateur photography skills. I'm glad tho that I'm learning day by day and getting better. Thanks for this video, awesome 👌
