- Rishi Sunak ‘trashing my record’ is to blame for the Conservatives' disastrous election result, the former Prime Minister Liz Truss has claimed.
Writing in The Telegraph, Ms Truss admitted she stayed quiet during the election campaign “to prevent further damage to the party” but said she must “speak out now”.
The former Prime Minister said: “More than 250 of us paid the electoral price for this. Regrettably, over the course of the next five years it will be the British people who have to bear the cost of this failing.”
Ms Truss then singled out Mr Sunak, who she claims “abandoned” Conservatives principles by claiming that “cutting taxes did not generate growth”.
This morning, former Tory MP Conor Burns unleashed on Ms Truss following her comments, saying those around her are "letting her down.
He told LBC's Sunday with Lewis Goodall: "I don't think she's actually well and those who are close to her are letting her down by not telling her the truth, she is preposterous, she is toxic, she needs to be quiet!"

Burns is correct about Truss, but he didn't mention the real issues that cost the Tories - austerity, mendacity, venality, sheer incompetence.
Absolutely, 14 years of being absolutely awful in government,l was what did it! Austerity, bringing about the greatest act of economic self-harm ever faced by the UK in Brexit, Boris and Cummings, their lockdown lies and absolute disdain for the general public they were deceiving, and then Truss and Quarteng. It's pretty obvious what did it!

@@chatham43 I would suggest the worker creates the wealth. The problem we have is greed and lack of reinvestment, you just have to look at Thames Water. Wealth/profit is syphoned off to offshore accounts and shareholders and reinvestment is lost.

The key aspect of the tory govt from 7/2016 until 7/2024 is the absence of more or less any criticism of the tory govt by the Tory press et al. In fairness, although the headline policies looked close, there are some promising legislative and policy proposals coming through. I've been encouraged over the last couple of weeks.

Confession! As soon as Sir Conor starts to define what he sees as 'conservative' values, he mentions individual wealth FIRST. Being honest, he should have stopped right there because that is it, the only thing they have ever cared about. Governing is a chore for tories, what they want is the keys to the treasury and no scrutiny.

If you want to see the results of nearly a decade and a half of single party rule look around: thousands of food banks, potholed roads, millions waiting for NHS treatment,a mental health crisis amongst children , an horrific level of obesity across the generations and a feeling of hopelessness amongst nearly half the adult population who did not bother to vote earlier this month.
No fan of Burns as he was a big supporter of Johnson. However, I heard this interview this morning & the way he referred to Truss was extraordinary. Gave her both barrels. The public will never forgive her for shafting their mortgages.
For a moment I thought finally a Tory who actually understands reflecting isn't about writing an article before the election. But no, he too has already decided what went wrong and just thinks everyone else needs time until they agree with his conclusions. Just like the rest of them.
