As a metal guy/artist/graphic designer I am real appreciative that this was a thing. I feel like a lot of creatives are drawn to metal because of how evocative the art and design is, and a lot of metalheads get into fine art as a result as well.

Glad Pushead was mentioned. He is, imo, the best! One that comes to mind that I bought in the mid 80s solely because of the art was To Mega Therion by Celtic Frost. That shit scared me to death. I bought it just to hear what kinda metal would be contained therein. Still have it.

"Does album art mater in the era of thumbnails?" Absolutely. An a time where I have unlimited access to music, the art is often what gets me to click. I discovered Rivers of Nihil this way, the Monarchy album cover drew me in. Same with Fleshgod Apocalypse and their Oracles album. Total Neverending Story callback to the vaporized knight scene which really made an impression on 7 year old me.

I'm really big on album art. One of my aspirations is to become a designer for metal album covers. I enjoy the whole process of logo and cover design.
I've designed for my own projects; it's a real blast; whether it's painting an abstract or using photography.

If not for the artwork on the Holy Diver and Last in Line albums, I’m not sure I would have given Ronnie James Dio a spin back in the early/mid 80’s. I am so glad I did because it scared the hell out of my friends and it really directed me from hard rock to heavy metal.

Old School Death Metal definitely has the greatest album cover of any genre. The deeper you dig into the underground the cooler the art gets.
And just remember, if the art is airbrushed, then the album always kicks ass

As a teen in the 80's I loved the Iron Maiden albums, particularly, "Piece of Mind," and, "Live After Death." Recently I've enjoyed Tool's use of H.R. Giger imagery (very fitting), and truly enjoyed the artwork, AND the music, of Soilwork on, "The Panic Broadcast," and their double album, "The Living Infinite."

Favorite logos: tough to choose. Maybe Emperor, Suffocation, and Vektor? Emperor’s is JUST SO ELEGANT, and it fits their music perfectly. Suffocation’s is brutal but still readable and it fits their cover art perfectly. Vektor’s looks like it’s exploding out of a vortex of technology. Gives me borg vibes in the best way possible.

Favorite artists would have to be Seth Siro Anton (singer/bassist of SepticFlesh who has done all their artwork + made a lot of album covers but his art isn't always representative of the music), Kristian Wahlin a.k.a. Necrolord, Dan Seagrave of course, Patrik Tegnander (album art for Gods Forsaken, Sentient Horror, ...), Pär Olofsson, Gyula Havancsak,...
However, my all time favorite would have to be Ola Larsson. Even though he hasn't made that many album covers, most of his work is fantastic. Look up "Sulphur Aeon - Gateways To The Antisphere" (or pretty much anything for Sulphur Aeon - great band as well btw), "Disma - Towards The Megalith", "King Of Asgard - Fi'mbulvintr", ...
