I know some saxophonists would consider this sacrilege but I play a plastic reed a BARI reed, and these are fantastic for the harmonics. Great video by the way, you really have nurtured the harmonic range wonderfully!
I've been "playing" flute for 30 years with absolutely no success, and started playing alto sax on march this year, and i'm so happy and satisfied getting the lower register of the instrument, (something I was never able to do properly with that damm flute), and now I want to try the tenor. I feel very natural with saxophone, I wish i had taken the desicion to play saxophone at least 20 years ago...I'm dumping that Mfkng flute to the garbage!!!
WAIT!!! It's a good idea to keep it and at least get it checked for leaks and design flaws before you give up on it. There are a lot of beginner flute lessons available on TH-cam.
@@Sirvalorsax thanks for the support and response!!, but I tried everything. Some time ago, I saw a classical guitar player on HBO talking a similar story with flute, and piano. Maybe flute was an imposition, my father wanted me to study flute, and in university I had a rough time trying to blow that freaking whistle. I switched to bass guitar, but playing melodies and parts in ensembles is something I miss a lot.
Great octaves!! May I ask how your reed and the tip of the mouth piece is set up?? Is it set at level or is the reed a little bit (like 0.5 mm) higher than the mouth piece tip? Unbelievable vibration is produced for your range!!
I always start at level and as a reed "breaks in" I make whatever adjustment works. In my opinion, it's all about the reed!!!! Developing this level of altissimo is really about knowing how to pick the right reeds out of whatever brand you wish. I prefer Vandoren Red Box 2.5 right now because of the way I have my horn and equipment set up. If I change any component, I need to still find the right feel and balance. I'll shortly be putting together a video on how to do this with alternate palm key fingerings!!!
Hey man, I'm just curious. I've been playing alto for 18 years and can get around altissimo easily. I got a tenor 82z to match my alto 82z. I've tried all sorts of reeds on different Theo Wanne mouthpieces. I'm so frustrated because altissimo on Tenor is nonexistent. It's either going to be a honk or a squeak (really jumping straight to really high overtones). Knowing I'm very comfortable on alto altissimo, I can't imagine it's that big of a difference. I've used a leak light and the horn is brand new and seals just great. I need some help! It's about to drive me out of my tree!
I'm going to tell you a huge "secret". Alto and tenor are two completely different instruments that just so happen to produce overtones 2 1/2 octaves exactly the same. This is the way I look at it. Take your horns and lie the next to each other and you'll see that the aren't proportionally bigger or smaller than one another. If they were, your tenor would like like a giant alto but it doesn't. Alto is a much more balanced sax than tenor in my opinion. With alto you can manipulate resistance easier. With tenor, it's all about AIR SPEED!!! Without hearing or seeing you play I would say focus on using a more relaxed embouchure with higher airspeed. Your choice of mouthpiece and reeds should reflect this. I just did a video about this and I need to edit it so it will be out soon. :)
Great sound - it would be helpful if you slowed down a little and/or recorded somewhere a little less crowded so it is easier to see your hand positions/movement.

I want to say yes but I don't have a tenor without a high F# key. I would never buy one without it at this point either. I haven't yet expored the upper range without using it. I will say this though, the notes gets really close to each other up there so with a slight embouchure adjustment you can bend a pitch a 1/2 step in either direction
may I ask what your setup is? I have an otto link 8 in ebonite, and I'm finding it difficult to keep my altissimo G's stable (hoping it's just practise I need, though - I'm a clarinetist first so perhaps some instincts aren't quite there yet!)

I do a light review of this mouthpiece here: th-cam.com/video/z_E8vCCb07A/w-d-xo.html I would strongly recommend against using what is called "the clarinet" embouchure where the lower lip covers the lower teeth. A lip out embouchure where the lower lip is rolled further out from the teeth when playing saxophone. This will eliminate restricting the sound with lip pressure. This will take some time to get used to. Maybe one or two months to develop the muscles. Start with much softer or really old reeds. You will also find that your mouthpiece facing might be too open. I now play a Vandoren T6 metal small chamber with Vandoren red box reeds and a Vandoren ligature. (I am not endorsed by Vandoren)

One of the most beautiful things about the saxophone is how well it blends with other saxes. The sax family is only ever a perfect 4th or 5th away from the next sax. Clarinet is disaster by comparison because you mostly go from soprano to bass clarinet so the blend isn't as homogeneous. It takes time to hear the subtle differences between the saxes especially when the music is written for them to blend so well. Listen to a lot of sax quartets and quintets and you'll hear the differences in a very short time.
@@Sirvalorsax sometimes where i am really confused is when i hear high notes but they sound so free that it seems impossible to get that sound with the octave key pressed on my alto because they would sound puffed. but on the same token what i hear i don't think it is a soprano because it sounds bigger than a soprano. but again i learned that there are 3 kind of sopranos with 3 pitch and who knows how many altos ,so it makes me more confused

Hello, In the most general sense I would say yes. But...... If I make one little change, it can cause me to switch back and forth. For example, I used to play Green Box Vandoren reeds and now I play Red Box. However if I change out the plate from the ligature, I might get a better response from the Green Box reeds. If I play a different mouthpiece I might use Blue Box reeds or if I change the tip opening for the same mouthpiece, I might get a completely different reed company altogether. You really have to experiment with what works best for the way you play because so many factors can influence the feel of the reeds. I play Red Box Vandoren reeds, 2.5 with a Vandoren T6 small chamber 0.095 tip opening now. 4 years is not a long time to be playing saxophone but I got ya buddy!! Make sure you check out this video th-cam.com/video/7RJ2Ab9KTCI/w-d-xo.html. Check out the "B Natural with high F# key fingering. Also try playing middle F fingering but add the side C key.
My best guess is that English is not a Latin based language so historically it just wasn't adapted. It is much simpler for English speakers also because of what's called moveable "Do" as opposed to fixed "Do" where "Do" can be the root of any note you choose depending on the key you are in and the mode of the scale. If you speak Spanish, you're in luck because I will soon start doing videos in Spanish! :)
@@Sirvalorsax I'm looking for a nice jazz mouthpiece that I can discover new techniques with my saxophone with, preferably a lower tone more fuller sounding one. I also need it to be a long lasting one because I'm currently a high school student. My budget would be I say is 150$ given I have to make my own money to get this mouthpiece.
I would highly recommend the Vandoren v16 ebonite. (Hard Rubber) It's around $120. I would suggest trying a few facings to see which one fits you the best. Because it is Vandoren and not crazy expensive, you'll be more likely to find this in stock at your local music store. Is there one in particular that you are considering? I have a review video and a comparison video on this piece.
The side Bb key works as an alternative to the high F# key for 4th octave D if your horn doesn't have a high F# key.

On my Mark V1 I don't have an F# side key - I can get all the notes to high C ( enough for me) but none of the fingerings for altissimo G are secure.
