I loop mine over the side mirror before I leave the parking lot. You can also loop it around a tree or post, don't loop it around a rock ( will nick the line). Walk away until all the flyline is off the reel, going from the reel to the mirror and back to your hand. I give a couple good sustained pulls of 40 lbs or so for 10 seconds each. You effortlessly explained the fly setup to people who know nothing about it. Thank you. Awesome video I've often though about this as I fish the same areas as you. I just have no clue what to do with a fly rod.
Dude! I've been wanting to try this for ages! So glad you finally made a video about it. Stoked on your first surf perch with the fly rod! Can't wait till I get mine! 👍🤙
Glad to see you finally fly fishing the surf! There’s no more challenging environment to swing a fly rod. Just wait till you hook into a Striper on the fly! Great stuff as always!
I've often thought fly fishing is more fly than fish. But once you try it, and once you catch a fish, you're the one who's hooked. Great video, as always!
fly fishing CRUSHES you just need the right environment and enough space with no trees around your head its super precise and flies destroy fish they love it.
Great video! You provided a glimpse into the past for me because my father fished for surf perch with a fly rod at the beach in Cayucas during the 90's. He weighted the fly to help keep it on the bottom and was quite successful. Thank you for the great shots and your reminders of being careful and respectful of the surf are spot on. A young soul was lost at Muir Beach recently who was washed off the rocks while fishing with his buddies. They tried to save him but they were drowning as well and were unsuccessful. Be safe my friend! Chuck
So I've been watching your videos for a while and you have no idea how hooked I am. You deliver some of the best content on TH-cam. Very much worth watching right before bed with the lights off all comfortable. The places you visit are breathtaking, you are very lucky indeed to experience something like that. I also see how you like to camp in the middle of nowhere by yourself, I know you're probably an expert but please be careful man, never know what's out there. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Stay safe!
Great video, Your fly fishing has improved a lot! One tip, when stripping the fly back in, keep your rod tip lower to the water and pointed directly at the fly. This helps you feel a strike more readily. I’m sure this can be difficult with waves but thought I’d mention it. Also, check out a “strip set” when fishing with streamers. It’ll help you hook up with a much higher percentage of fish! Keep the fly fishing videos coming!!
Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. I hope your surgery goes well. We will be here to support you. Sucks that you had you achilles tendon surgery and now this. God bless tho brother.
Fly fishing is one of my favorite ways of fishing. When I moved from the mountains to the beach I've wanted to try this exact thing lol. I've been tempted to bring a fly rod out on the boat I work on. Love the vids and everything you do

Crazy how far you’ve come with fly fishing. Been watching for a few years now and I remember when you first tried it and were in a river going to trout I believe. Went from asking for tips to using all the proper terminology.
Well done bro. You have improved so much with the fly rod. From the thrashing it about. When you think you are loading the rod. You need to pause an extra second- 2 seconds. What your cast at 15:15, You need to stop the back cast between 11-12 on a clock position. This will allow the line to flex the rod . Hope this helps 🎣
Awsome idea , your pretty good with that fly rod. Thanks for the tips , I'm novice at fly fishing and its been awhile since I've done it. Might have to try some. Thanks again
Good job. You pretty much got all your terminology correct. Your casting motion is actually pretty good for a rookie. Your casting wrist is on a very good horizontal plane. No wonder your line is shooting out fairly well. Make sure you’re always wearing sunglasses. Surf flies can often get into your face or back of the head depending on the wind or if your fly is hitting the water at the end of the forward or back cast and weighting down your fly. Be safe out there.
A short straight piece of mono or fluorocarbon also works in the surf! Packaged leaders like that include the tippet on the end… you’d only add tippet after you trim the included tippet section back after changing flies or to lengthen your leader with a thinner or less lbs. test tippet.

All summer down here in southern California im usually casting in and just to the other side of the trough right up at the beach. Corbina, perch, croakers, and even the occasional hali can be right in there.
Come down to Socal when the corbina are biting in summer. They will munch on those sand crab flies. I would drill some bigger holes in your stripping basket in case you get swamped, it will drain much faster.
Beach fly fishing is THE most difficult type of fly fishing. Come down this summer and sight cast to Corbina and Spotfin Crocker. One tip, fish A LOT SHALLOWER then you think. Where you were standing is where the perch most likely were at - they feed in crazy shallow water.

Cool Video! This is what i do when i fish for seatrout. two pro tips: if you have the linebasket on your side-hip, you will be able to get more line in one strip, because its a longer distance aka more movement in the fly. What i like to do is count the waves normally there are three waves before the next set of three, this is when i prepare to cast just over the third wave where the water is calmer. That must be the Pacific so it will vary.
Tip: keep your rod tip down. When you keep it high it creates a bow in the line and that’s just slack you or the fish have to take up for the strike. You will hook up to more fish with the tip down.
Niccccccccce! My only suggestions are rod tip down more, and consider less shoulder involved movement. With proper rod load you can get the same casts focusing on elbow movement vs whole arm/shoulder. Can’t wait to hit the surf again myself! 🙌
